The one-handed tennis backhand: Use your off-hand correctly for precision and control!

  • The one-handed backhand is NOT DEAD!
In this video I will specifically focus on the non-dominant hand.
One key aspect I focus on is the role of the "off-hand" in executing the perfect one-handed tennis backhand. Contrary to popular belief, the non-dominant hand plays a crucial role in stabilising the racquet and providing balance throughout the stroke. From the initial setup to the follow-through, I demonstrate how to use the non-dominant hand effectively to enhance control and precision.

Thank you, thank you. Have been working on my bh for two weeks, and the instructor was telling me to get into that turned ready position instead of the weird thing I do. But, that textbook turn high elbow was so uncomfortable and messed up my timing....but now I get it....let the left do the work, relax the right so it's not tight across my chest, to stay loose.

One more thing that isn’t covered well enough in online instruction regarding off-hand on OHBH… and this is partially because coaches who don’t actually hit good OHBH are too stuck with old school “stay sideways, split arms” are a failure 😅
The reason off-hand stays on the throat all the way to the hip is you need it when you start uncoiling. Further on - you don’t need it any more, as centrifugal force comes in play. But if you let go off the off-hand too early, dominant arm tends to wrap around the chest as uncoil begins. They try to counter it with tightening the arm, or slowing down the swing, neither of which is good for repeatable and powerful OHBH.
PS I started using 2HBH from the beginning of March, always wanted to walk this route… And now that OHBH is officially dead, best moment to put away my best shot 😊

Depends on a lot of things. Without seeing the stroke it's difficult to say other than either reduce take-back or prep sooner

Solid instruction. The one hander still has its advantages. The slice backhand was used a lot by Federer to set up points. Most people don't realize that!

    Thanks for 1 handers !
Pause at 4:39, I often do this error, the left arm is not against the body, but not enough pointing back. Staying with the eyes on the contact point after ball has been launched helps not to turn like that.

Just for the double check, the left first moves a little bit forward untill it reaches the point where it lets go, and it moves backwards? It will try that. I ven been working on turning in a bit more (to the point of almost showing my back to the opponent). Results are a nice powerfull BH but need more stability and consistency. Maybe my lefthand can provide...

This is the best tutorial on the internet! Just curious, is there any adjustment tips for cross-eye dominant players? I sometimes feel as if the ball disappeared from my sight during the loading (once I turned my body)

What’s the role of the scapula? Do you contract your scapula as you hit? I get good form & quite a bit of spin when I contract my scapula (during the shot), but only at the expense of power and depth.

Nice videos , hadn't hit in yrs in my youth won a few singles tournaments , one was a usta jr and bunch of doubles also. Went to local park , in my my 30s now but i stopped playing competitively at 14. Went to the public park courts and played lot of different ages and yea my slice one hand back hand was too much but they all had nice strokes and topspin which i have completely lost. I beat most with steady slices until they got frustrated andbeat themselves. It inspired me to get back

I studied Roger and Stan specifically to observe 1HBH slices and they slice LOADS. We don't think of them slicing off the BH much but they do - either tactical to slow the pace and keep it low or if its coming at an odd angle/possible potential jamming. They only unload on specific balls.
