    4:50 me every time I look at how much I spend on "occasional" food delivery. Oof. So I decided to start investing in kitchen gadgets to make cooking more fun, because I never feel that way about the $60 food processor or even my $20 santoku knife because they're investments in my culinary journey and something I love which also feeds my family -- and cheaper!

      Hey, that's a fun way to spin it! Find way to put more joys into the cooking experience so that you look forward to it and don't *want* to order out! I LOVE that! Creative and inventive.

    Oh my gosh, Hannah, I did not expect a video about budgeting for hobbies to get so deep! You’ve helped me put a name to all the secondhand clothes buying I’ve been doing: a bad spending habit. Time to figure out what, if anything, I REALLY need for my new job and stop buying other clothes…

    If started a wishfarm category: to start a native plant nursery. First step was to acquire some plants, soil, equipment- fun to carve out those categories in the budget.

    "Try it before you buy it" is THE. BEST. advice ever! I spent SOOOOOO much money on books this year... A hobby I truly love... but recently realized the library has all of the same books I spent money on... Even the brand-spanking-new ones that I just assumed I'd never find there. So now I borrow everything from the library, and only purchase 5-star reads that I know I will read again, or want to recommend/loan to all of my friends!

    Hannah!!! This is the most relatable video I've seen on budgeting the variety of hobbies I have. You totally get it!! Your plant, skincare and camera examples were perfect. Each completely different hobbies, with different price points and pitfalls. I loved when you said "I wish I felt more guilt than I do" about your plant spending HAHA. I think that clarified me that I love splurging on my favorite videogame's art, but everything else, eh, I could definitely reign it in. :P And I can definitely just create a timeline for home and stationary spending where there is no rush to get things.

    Could you guys make a video about using YNAB as a college student? As a student, I don’t have a constant source of income certain months but I don’t have monthly bill payments either. I’ve been trying to make YNAB work for me but I can’t seem to get the hang of it with my situation :(

    • @tobecagain
      @tobecagain 3 года назад +3

      I completely agree and will watch (and refer to student friends!). I YNABbed as a student (of course, all of our situations are different!). During the school year, I had income, and YNAB helped me squirrel away 1/4 of my $$ to have on hand during unpaid summers. During summers, I didn’t have regular income or scheduled expenses. But I did have things I was responsible for (feeding myself), things that supported my studenting (coffee shops), and other irregular expenses (non-free transport, treats, clothes, another notebook, that app I wanted, bike tuneup, movies, shirt for temp gig, etc). My categories were mostly flexible and my dollars’ jobs reflected my anticipated priorities. There was a lot of rebudgeting, because I was mostly choosing between wants (vs true expenses, which I’m grateful were mostly covered for me). YNAB helped me manage the “allowance” I’d saved for myself so I could choose a weekend trip over a new outfit. It also helped me monitor coffee spend: I used “coffee” as admission to coffee shops where I liked to write, and kept my eye on whether it was becoming an overspending habit. It also helped me budget to my values, like planning for the true cost of tipping well.

      I would definitely recommend Facebook Marketplace! I also use Poshmark, which has been great for a long time, but they do take 20% of your sale, and if you want to give someone a discount on the $8 shipping, it comes out of your profit as well :/ Facebook Marketplace has now incorporated shipping, and now I can list my items to anyone in the world, which has made sales happen a lot more frequently than through poshmark! Would definitely recommend!

    As a hobby gamer, that virtual reality example was a bit dismissive. Although, I am sorry if that was a real example for you.
    If you're prone to motion sickness in real life, jumping into a game that has a lot of action and controller movement will make you sick. You need time to get your brain used to the activity and motion sickness will eventually dissipate. Start off with stationary games like beat saber or job simulator. These games mimick real life movements, keep you standing in one place and won't make you sick.

    • @kukurukuru04
      @kukurukuru04 3 года назад +2

      I didn't take Hannah's comment this way, but vr gaming isn't a hobby of mine. I actually went and tried one a month ago just to ensure I didn't feel sick after playing, as it was a legitimate concern of mine.

    • @kme06d
      @kme06d 3 года назад

      @@kukurukuru04 I totally get it! I think dismissive was probably the wrong word, but I can't think of what to call it. I've just read a lot of 1 star VR reviews saying "I tried this action game that everyone talks about and it made me sick!" and those type of reviews put people off who haven't even tried it. VR is just totally different from anything tech we've had before, and it's really hard to explain to people. You really have to try it to understand how amazing it is and the fear of motion sickness is probably stopping many from just trying it out.
      What did you think once you tried it?

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  3 года назад +1

      Oh, no way! I didn't know VR games actually make people feel nauseous! I just pulled that off the top of my head because it seemed funny 😂 That's good to know!
      Maybe a better example to use would've been "don't buy a mountain bike before you've actually tried mountain biking." I had a friend buy a paddle board only to find out it was terrifying to her and she sold it to someone else! I think as a buying/consuming society we often forget the option of borrowing-I know I sure have.

    • @kme06d
      @kme06d 3 года назад

      @@YNABofficial no worries! It is something that can happen, and some people go into it thinking that it's a definite and it scares them off. It doesn't help that there's nothing to really compare it to in order to give people a better idea of how it feels. It's really a "try it and you'll know" activity. My sister refuses to try it because she gets motion sick on those 3D simulator rides, but VR is nothing like that.
      The idea is right on though, don't spend a lot of money on something if you're not sure about it.
