    I always put the inflow from selling stuff secondhand into the same category I put the initial purchase in. If I bought some hiking boots for $200 and then sold them a few years later for $60, those boots didn't cost me $200; they cost me $140. If I had to ship them to a buyer, that postage would also go into that same category, where it would automatically be set against proceeds.
    For me, at least, things like postage almost always belong in another category based on why I'm mailing something, rather than its own Postage category. Sending a backpack in to the manufacturer for repairs under warranty? That goes in Gear-Travel, Sports, and Outdoors. Mailing a present to a family member? That postage goes in the relevant Gift category. Mailing a check to pay a parking fine? That goes in Idiot Tax.

    • @Tumasia
      @Tumasia 2 года назад +1

      Same thing here! If I spend $100 for a gift who cares how that money disperses: $70 - gift, $3 - wrapping and packaging, $17 - postage, or any other way. All this money is spent to make this present happen. I used to put postage charges into a postage category only when I had a small business and posted my staff and it was part of expenses that I needed to know of and calculate into the prices so that I run a business, not a charity.

    I also like to monitor my average budgeted for various categories. Rather than saying, I'm going to spend X dollars less, my goal is a % lower average spending or at least stable spending. I don't worry so much about overspending tho. Our priorites are: budgeting savings, monthly pay down of credit card plus interest, funding fixed exps and increasing age of money (currently over 75 days). All the rest is sort of icing on the cake for us. This has allowed us to pay cash for two major appliance failures.

    Number of knitting-related categories in my budget - um....7. It has its own section. Great video though, and I definitely need to re-think my miscellaneous stuff. I have an unexpected expenses category, but I also have a "Margin of Error" category that I use to cover overspending, but I think maybe I need to get rid of it, or at least drastically reduce how much I'm putting in there.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  3 года назад

      Having seven knitting-related categories means you're DEFINITELY in tune with how much you prioritize that hobby and those dollars and that's great!!
      Also, having a "margin of error" category is definitely not a bad thing, but it does kind of give us permission to cheat for a bit. If I am choosing whether or not to overspend in another category, I should have to question where else I *won't* be spending money that month in order to move money to the category I'm considering overspending in. The "margin of error" category eliminates that idea of scarcity slightly since they're essentially "unassigned dollars." BUT, you also know your own budget and and your own life's needs and financial strategy, and I think you can definitely use a "margin of error" category really well and responsibly! Totally up to you!

    I am definitely guilty of the consistently overspending in one category (and yes, it is eating out). And it's not a priority, it's really overspending because I give in to the craving. My question is, what tools are you using to get to the insight "I overspent on eating on 8 months in a row." Since I was trained early in my YNAB journey to immediately cover overspending and make the red go away. I know I'm doing this pretty often, but I certainly don't remember at the level of "uh oh, this is the 8th month in a row." I realize this is a question that gets asked a lot (new YNABers want to track overspending, wondering if they can leave the categories red). I don't want red categories, but is there a way I can use Reports, or an additional tool I can create outside of the app so I can hear what my budget wants to tell me? PS - love the gumball machine analogy, best explanation of Age of Money I've heard yet!

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  3 года назад +2

      Hey Sasha! Best way I know how is by knowing how much you *want* to be spending in that category every month (let's say $50) and adding that to your category line as a constant reminder (i.e. "Dining Out - $50/mo). Allot $50 to it at the start of the month and cover overspending as it happens, just like you're doing. Then, when you peak at the "Activity" column in your "Dining Out" category, you can see how far over $50 you went (like maybe it says -$83.21-now I know I was spending about $33 over what I wanted to in that category). I'm not sure if there's a concrete way to see the overspent difference in reports, but if you look at your "Trends" for that category in the "Reports" tab, you can see how far you spent beyond the amount you wanted to spend. You may have to do a little math yourself to find out the *exact* amount you're overspending every month, but you can deduce most of what you need to from the visual itself!

    Question for Hannah if she's reading the comments. In my budget, I have a category for eating out, and instead of a coffee one, I have 2 separate coffee categories (one for each other the 2 coffee shops I go to - Tim Horton's & Starbucks).
    If I go to Tim's and I get a proper meal - a bowl of soup or a sandwich - say because I need a quick light dinner before an early meeting - I count it against my 'eating out' budget. If I just go through the drive thru & I get a coffee or a cold drink, I count it against my 'coffee' budget.
    Is that cheating? I haven't gone over budget in any of the 3 categories by doing it this way. I admit I originally saw 'eating out' as being for sit down restaurants. With Covid that's not happening. I am more wondering if it is going to cause me issues post- Covid & if maybe I should get a handle on it now.

      I'm not Hannah :) but it sounds like you've found a system that works for you! Those distinctions - eating out vs a just a drink - do make sense to me, especially if you tend to spend more in one area than you would like to.

      Hey Tania! Totally up to you, but I do a similar thing! Just as much as I use my budget to keep my spending under control, I also use it to keep an eye on how *often* I'm spending on certain things (like my vice: coffee). So, if I go through a Scooter's drive thru and buy a latte and a burrito, I actually split the transactiono-$4.10 to my coffee category and $3.83 to the dining out category (can you tell I've done this a lot?). That way not only is the money getting allotted to the proper category, but I also have a way clearer picture of how often I'm consuming convenience coffee (I wouldn't get that kind of clarity if I blended them both together). If I lumped that latte into the dining out category or the burrito into the coffee category, it would mess with the information I'm trying to gather about myself. So, by categorizing a Tim Horton's meal to the dining out category instead of your Tim Horton's category, you're tracking what you actually *want* to be tracking (how often you're eating out and how much you're spending)-the location itself is less important. Plus, if you're curious how much you're spending at Tim Horton's, you can always type "Tim Horton" in the search bar and find the grand total there! I hope this helps!
      -Hannah :)

    On the age of money dropping, it could be that you had a lot of medical expenses lately. Age of money also resets with a new budget.

      True, or anything you're saving for that you finally purchase. That's why I wish you could choose to not include some (savings) categories because as is, Age of Money is a useless number to me. Hope your medical expenses were feasible and not ongoing.
