  • This January, YNAB introduced the 34-Day Reset: a five-week challenge of tracking dollars, cutting non-essential spending, and finding yourself with extra cash you didn't even know existed. Hannah gave the 34-Day Reset a trial run in October, and is here to share some of her most noteworthy takeaways from this challenge. Whether you're seeking some encouragement amid your own 34-Day Reset, or tuning in to see if this is something you want to give a try for yourself, you can learn more at the link below!

For me, I found the best way to limit my convenience food habit is to schedule it in. This way, rather than every day being a "will I, won't I?" mental dance, I can think to myself "No, Thursday is my day to buy lunch." I find it also adds some anticipation and I am more careful to pick something that I love to eat - say taking the effort to go buy a bahn mhi rather than grabbing a random sausage roll from the bakery beside my work.

Here is an idea, when you get a craving put a dollar from the category you didnt spend in into a savings goal and when you actually spend on a craving, use the money from avoiding the cravings

Almost like your own personal punch card

I've been using YNAB since mid-2018, once my son was born. It's really woken me up to alllll the money I spend that's "just for fun"--aka impulse buys, clothes, makeup, etc. Now I can track it and it's definitely made me put my head between my knees with a paper bag (figuratively speaking). I live in the Northeast, which is already expensive, and I've realized that if I just WAIT a week with something in my cart, sometimes that impulse goes away. So my new takeaway after the reset--think on it for a week before I buy. It allows me to calm down on payday so I don't run out of money two days after I pay all my bills. Thanks Hannah, thanks YNAB, for always keeping me in check!

I'm glad to see someone that was focused on the habit building because that's where I'm at. I probably won't save $1000, but I was eating out an taking from by grocery category too much.

Setting guidelines for eating out is something I hadn't considered, especially when it is my kryptonite. Not only do I overspend, but I also end up choosing convenient and unhealthy meals that leave me bursting at the seams and experiencing buyer's remorse. From now on I'll try to avoid eating out alone and instead choose to share a meal with another as it is far more rewarding. Thank you for sharing these insights!

I prepare a yoghurt or overnight oats and some sandwich or salad in my fridge, ready to grasp and put in a tiny soft coolbox. First weel u'll need a note on your keys or door to not forget your foodkit when going out. No excuse to eat out, to take away. I was gifted this Steel box to put a meal in. It keeps it warm for many hours. Or fresh if e.g. fruitsalads. Bring soups in a flask.

However, I will allow my sister to spend her money on eating out but I try not to partake even if she is paying. I love the YNAB videos, but I often feel they're out of touch with my reality. We're a family of 4 living on less than $2,000 net a month. We're already extremely strict on spending and there isn't $1,000 to be saved. Is the expectation that people have a good bit of disposable income but struggle to reel in spending?

Sounds like your situation means that you've mostly answered the question 'where does my money go?' when the month ends. I feel that YNAB's selling proposition is actually less about 'you need a budget' and more about 'you need to get ahead' through utilising disposable income to save or clear debt.
We have disposable income once you take away all our fixed expenses we have a bit left over but we aren't always constructive with it. I'm finding YNAB a really helpful way to finally get a hold of that money, get ahead (at least plan) on those less frequent expenses and then purpose this money to doing better stuff with it.

@@c0smoKram3r That makes sense. And we do have a little wiggle room with variable expenses, so I'm hoping YNAB will help us make wiser choices.

@@preciousjeni I understand where you're coming from. I'm unemployed right now due to the pandemic and it's like "save on avg $1000 by the end of the reset" and I'm thinking but that's my income for the month. I'm not saving anything.
Once I find a job, I'll try again to see how much I do actually save.

    Why is it 34 days?

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  3 года назад +4

Hey friend! 34-days because that's how long the YNAB free trial is! We set it at 34 days because most of the time a month isn't enough to experience a full month of budgeting plus the monthly turnover. Just a little bumper room!

I don't even earn $1000 a month... So there is no way I can save $1000 by the end of 34 days reset.

I was confused that you said you don't know how much money you saved? The app is supposed to tell you that.

All the money was still applied to the budget items. It would be work figuring out which ones were "left" over money versus items that were funded pending to be spent. The easiest way would be to move them to a 34 Day Reset to see the dollar amount.

Conditioning. Begin disciplining yourself. And, ask need or want. That is the success to all budgets .
Maslow states needs as Food, Shelter, and, clothing. All other desires are wants.
I hope this helps. Stay away from all advertising. And, focus on Maslows Hiarchey.
