I’m a vlogger seriously trying to get somewhere but I’m sorry, getting 14 views in 24 hours on a video that took me MULTIPLE DAYS TO MAKE Is beyond discouraging.. this is why I’ve been so lost with my channel lately.. I really hope this video helps me and thanks for making it !
Here's the thing Tim (and I'd love to hear your perspective on this) - "Suggested" traffic lost SO MUCH of it's power in 2019 because RUclips changed most of the slots in the Suggested area to be "Recommended for you." Those "Recommended for you" videos often have NOTHING to do with the video topic at hand that I'm watching, but rather, more of the same of stuff I've already watched. Prime example is that I watch a lot of Jimmy Fallon and Conan O'Brien, so it's recommending me that in the "Suggested" videos area right now while your video isn't even about the same subject. My channel hit 200k subs and then just completely *died* once RUclips made this change to "Suggested" because that was how I consistently got 75% of my incoming traffic and new subs. Anything you can say on this matter? Thanks so much for your work!
For years, about 50% of my videos were Suggested Videos and now it's 25%, even though the quality of my videos hasn't changed and in fact, may have improved. I assumed something in the algorithm changed and perhaps what you mentioned is the reason.
@@AndysAwesomeAdventures Yes, I'm sorry that's happened to you; like I mentioned above, 75% (some months, more) of my incoming subscribers, views, revenue was due to hitting Suggested time and time again. Now there's only *maybe* one or two slots you have the chance of getting into with that Suggested area, and RUclips only gets *more* creators on the platform so more and more competition vying for that "Suggested" video spot... so fewer spots, more people competing. I used to always believe in the mantra of making videos for PEOPLE and not an algorithmic ROBOT, but when this sort of change happens and decimates such a large portion of traffic, it's hard not to believe in the "robot" element to all this. Best of luck to you, friend.
Suggested and "recommended for you" don't always surface videos that are similar to the one you're watching. Sometimes that is the case, but often it's content that targets the viewer. If you watched a lot of late nigh show content recently, then yes, they're going to give you more of that even if the video you're watching has nothing to do with that. I think your example proves my point that the key is to get people to watch your videos, then watch more of them.
@@VideoCreators I'm essentially seeing the "Recommended for you" 9 out of 10 times. To have lost so much of my traffic almost like a light switch being turned off in 2019, I can only imagine this is the case for a lot of my target audience (gamers 7-14, mostly male, usually horror niche) - to reach 200k subs and 63 million overall views with no shout outs was no easy task and it didn't come all at once; it was largely from many different videos hitting "Suggested." I agree that the goal is to get people to watch your videos, however, I think the resistor in the circuit here is that it has now become harder to reach "Suggested" traffic in 2019 and it was a great way to be discovered. Hopefully we can still find our way to reaching as many people as we can to change their lives for the better, but I know that I've only increased production, quality, etc. while the numbers have gone down (with Suggested going to about 10% of overall traffic now). Getting people to watch my videos is great because so many felt that I had a great product, but I was able to reach them because of the old "Suggested" traffic ways. Thanks for hearing me out!
I've been doing the method of mentioning 1 playlist that works as a continuation of the content over the last 3 months I've been getting 10%-15% End Screen Click-Through. Creating a web of content that your viewer will want to follow has yielded great results so far.
the key is to take what videos are being suggested to your videos, and make content around the feedin, impressions go up 1000% and views follow suit. Let what content other poeple are watching that are then watching your videos and do something around that content
Yeah, that happens when someone else uploads a video that affects how that viewer now responds to your video. You can sometimes get picked up as the next best suggested video after someone else's video. Like, I had a debt free video that didn't do very well until another popular creator uploaded their debt free video. Mine became the next suggested video after it and now a lot of people cared about my video because they had just seen the other creator's debt free video.
Thanks for this video ... i realized I made a mistake I need to fix ASAP with the end screens. You are one of my favorite youtubers that helped me out. 😎
2:24 If your videos are always trying to end the viewing session (by getting people over to your website, to buy your course, download your things, or follow you on Instagram, or whatever) that video just might not perform very well long term. It's probably not going to be suggested by RUclips. 2:46 To kind of predict and track this on a video look at the metric in your RUclips analytics called End Screen Elements Shown. 2:55 It is the percentage of people who clicked play and got to the end of a video. 3:04 The next metric to look at is End Screen Elements Clicked. This is the click through rate on the end screen elements. 3:10 It indicates how many people not only got to the end of the video, but what percentage of those people clicked to keep watching more. Thereby extending the viewing session. 3:19 What's great about that is we are now controlling what video they clicked to watch next. The more people we get to the end of our video, and the more of them click that next video, now that next video is more likely to become suggested to that first video. 3:45 Also don't just give them another video to click and watch. Instead, give them a short playlist. 3:55 Amazing powerful tools that are so under utilized. 3:59 The goal of playlists is not to organize content. 4:06 The goal of playlists should be to get a viewer to watch one video, then another, and another. To craft viewing sessions. 4:19 The more people who make it through your playlist, the more likely it is for those videos to become suggested to each other. Even for viewers who aren't in the playlist. 4:39 I would first focus on getting fifty percent of the people who clicked play on your video to the end of your video. I don't mean fifty percent average retention overall. I mean half the people who clicked play are getting to the end. That is really, really hard. 4:57 When you get there your channel will just take off! 5:03 What should I do to be suggested next to a popular RUclips creator's video? 5:16 Think on what would be the next natural, logical video that someone might want to watch after watching that other person's video. 5:24 For example, there's a gap in their content, a common/comic question that everyone in the comments is asking. 5:32 One of the ways I've found that really helps is if you start by calling out that other video in your video. Then the viewer immediately feel like being in the right place. 5:46 Address the exact thing the audience has a question about. 5:50 People don't want to watch the same video. They got that information. Now they want the next step. 6:00 You also have to increase click through rate on your titles and thumbnails. 6:07 How do you design your end screens for more clicks? What's the best place to put those elements where people are most likely to click?
I was already using end screen on all my videos, putting almost always one or two playlists, and now I understand why my playlists views keep increasing. I think that I will put the Subscribe button lesser from now. Thanks guy!
Yep, i know something about that feeling, out of nowhere, my video got 240k views in about a month. The most important thing is to focus on what you like, and if you deserve it, you'll get recommended. Because if you think your videos are good enough, people will appreciate what your'e doing, and engage in your community.
Brilliant content Tim & team. Thank you for setting the bar increeeedibly high. 50% of those that click on the video and get to the end is soooooo tough, but it's possible. And yes, I agree that playlists are the most under utilized aspect of YT. Thanks for the great video and wishing you all the best for 2020. Congratulations on passing 1/2M subs. All the very best, Cheers Rick

Thanks Tim! I've been putting up end screen content on all of my latest uploads, not something I used to worry about - now after seeing this and going through some of my analytics that you suggested I can see that "Best for Viewer" caused a higher CTR than when I just choose a video for them. That tells me that I'm better to choose that option over my own...thoughts?

That's what I think, the videos I've had that did the best were all suggested videos, but then from the perspective of a smaller channel, without a backbone or supporters to just watch on the whim, I've posted similar videos, with similar content, topic, even thumbnail, and only 1-2 would end up suggested, shows me while you can work on Topic, SEO, and Thumbnails, beyond that it really is a crapshoot and true luck to get suggested on RUclips.
Hi Tim, i REALLY GOT SERIOUS Problem, you stated that metadata isn't really important enough right now, but recently i edit some tags and describtion in my best videos hoping can perform greater than before, but now suddenly my views drop from 25.000 per days to 1.500 per days !!!!!!!!, only 3 days ago, what do you think i should do? today i'm freakin out then changed it back so close 95% enough to what alr written before, will youtube recommeding this videos again or not?
