So I’m army(infantry), currently 7 years in, still a year and a half til I ETS. I was told, by a recruiter, that it was impossible due to my years in service to change over. Due to I’d have to be brought down to a rank of E-3. It’s the current rank and max years of service thing, like if I’m an E-5 for more than 14 years I can be forced out. I wanted to do AST( what I really would like to do) or ME(kind of similar to what I do). Hopefully I worded that right for a good answer.
Hows it going man. Did you speak to a Coast Gaurd recruiter or army recruiter about switching? im currently an AET in the coast guard going on 5 years in
I would say higher ten whoch is a phase we use for ppl that need to rank up to a certain rank by a certain time of service is very real, but for E-5 you can do 20 years without being forced out. My supervisor retires next year and he is a E-5 and was prior army
Can you talk about duty stations. I’m interested in going CG reserves but i have my home and business in texas. I want to make sure that when I go through boot camp I will be stationed in texas. The recruiter said I would be but I have heard from multiple prior service that recruiters are known to lie. Lol
My MEPS had probably 100 people. There were only about 5 people going to CG, and they were fucking wild. They came in ridiculous shape and very serious. I still don't understand what that was all about
Julian and Jose, thank you for the informative video. Question regarding firearms. In the Survival Guide (no page numbers but under Firearm Safety Rules) Standard Pistol is a SIG P229R DAK .40 cal. Does the USCG still use that handgun or is the Glock 19 Gen5 MOS 9mm the pistol of choice? Thank you in advance for the answer.
Looking for information from a former Army 68W NCO who is now in the Coast Guard. What was your pipeline like? Did you go to HST A School straight from DEPOT or did you have to wait as a non-rater? How soon did you make PO3 after graduating A School?
Any chance you could interview an ET if you know any? Could maybe sway a few ppl to go that route since it's often a critical rate from what I've heard. Anyways nice video!
I'm a little bit confused here. Do you always need a conditional release form to change branches or can you use your DD214 form? Witch is a better way.
You need the conditional release if you still have time left in the contract from your original branch (even if it's IRR time) ...like how the typical contract is 4 years active/ 4 years IRR If you chose to do all eight years active duty or you already did your IRR time then your good. If you didn't then you need the conditional release. The DD214 just proves that's you were honorably discharged and are eligible to enlist again...other then that it does nothing for you.
Can someone help me out. I am prior service and I am considering becoming a coastie. What is the basic schedule of a coast guard? I know it depends on where and how you are serving but just tell me your experience. I am curious about several things. Does the coast guard get 72s and 96s? What is the weekly schedule? so basically how many days a week do you work and how long is the work day? Lastly is it hard to take leave?
@@devildogus2187 small boat station: 2 days on 2 days off aka fireman schedule Large cutters: go underway for 3 months (could be up to 6 but that's rare). Underway workday is M-F 0800-1600. Saturday is a field day. Sunday is "off" you just stand your watch and that's it. When the cutter is inport the workday is 0700-1300. Unless you have duty then you stay on the ship. *Keep in mind that cutters are out there to do the more arduous missions like counter narcotics and long range SAR so work is frequently done after the workday too. That's why they give the crew a break when inport. Smaller cutters: they don't go out as far or as long but they also go out more frequently and have smaller crews to stand their inport duty. Support units: M-F 0700-1500. Commute to work and commute to home. Unless your on duty then you stay on the base overnight. There's also a couple of odd ball units that have different schedules. Like typical military showers where you have "10" minutes to shower the entire 90 man recruit company with 6 showerheads. The showers were all open bay when I was there (that might change) ...but if your embarrassed or weirded out about showering with a bunch of other guys ... nothing to worry about ..that place is so stressful that when you actually get there this will be the last thing on your mind.
The army as combat soldier is way more difficult the being enlisted in the coast guard. The coast guard is joke when it comes to being in the military.
