    The folks at Ohuhu were kind enough to send me a set of their Halawa coloured pencils to review - thanks, Ohuhu!
    We'll take a look at the colour range, do some experimenting with the pencils, and you'll get a sneak peek at my new project - a coloured pencil classification grid. :) Thank you so very much to Helen Cryer on whose channel I first saw this grid and who very kindly gave me the OK to take her classification concept and run with it. :D There will be a separate video coming soon that will focus just on the classification system - and I hope all you coloured pencil aficionados out there will help me to make the system better and more accurate. Stay tuned! :)

    This is the best review I've seen of these in the glut of videos on this release. Thank you! Those were more like "demonstrations." I suspect (I allege) that was because they didn't want to be negative. Your review isn't negative but it seems to be accurate. You are the only person (I saw) to break out other pencils and do some comparisons. The other reviews didn't do that and avoided any discussion really about the performance. Because of that, I kind of felt that maybe their reviews were BS and nobody wanted to say anything negative about Ohuhu and be taken off the freebie list. The pencil itself and the range appears very attractive. But if it was all filler, I wasn't interested. And the fact that you show, no, they aren't on par with a professional level pencil but that they do compare nicely to Arrtx, which I really like, but are softer made me rethink things. So thank you for this video. Being honest doesn't have to translate into a no, these pencils aren't for me. A softer Arrtx-like pencil with a pretty color palette is very good. I'm also hoping they like good paper. The full-color barrel Kalours are like that. They aren't great on copy paper - tend to skate about and look under pigmented - but really love my bit of a tooth 100% cotton paper I use. And it's not just budget pencils that are like that. My beloved Coloursoft like a bit of tooth as well. ETA, some people on Reddit suspected these were made by the same factory that makes the Marco Renior and Marco Tribute. And some of the color numbers are the same. The color names are the same. The Marco Tribute pencil is a solid product.

      So glad you liked the review! I think you've brought up kind of the "elephant in the room" - it can be daunting (particularly for new RUclipsrs or for those who are really counting on their channel to do well) to give reviews that are less-than-glowing if they want the company to keep sending things. I'm fairly new at the RUclips game but I'm also old enough (and cynical enough ;)) to not really be bothered if a company doesn't want to send me anything else. :) I have to say, though - I sent emails to Ohuhu after I reviewed both of the products they sent me with some constructive criticism and my email contact was quite grateful and happy to receive the feedback. That impresses me. :)
      I don't own any Marco pencils but that's interesting.
      Thanks so much for chiming in! :)

    Hi Connie - wow, I think that's the best review I've seen, not just on these, but on any product I can think of right now. I kept thinking that if Ohuhu is smart, they will be highly appreciative of your feedback because your approach showed them what is important to users. The chart you had from Helen is terrific and I would expect Ohuhu is happy to be placed where they are. I agree that single pencil availability is not realistic - it's a $40 set - it would cost more to manage individual inventory. I love, love, love that science brain of yours it's so fun to see how you nailed this review! It's always a pleasure to see you and this review was very special - great job!!

    Thank you very much for such an in-depth review and comparing with other sets. I totally agree with the hard-soft and dry-creamy scale for pencils, it's much better than the frankly silly wax vs oil based pencils. I also consider transparency vs opaqueness of pencils but that's a whole another story!
    I think the biggest contrast that shows the creamy vs dry dichotomy is the luminance vs light-fast. I feel both are similar levels of softness but the light-fast are definitely creamier than luminance. In fact most of my fav pencils are on the top right of your graph - lightfast, polychromos, Holbein. Not a huge fan of Prismacolor, inspite of being soft and creamy. I feel Prismacolor is more waxy than creamy, like lipstick as opposed to lip balm (polychromos). Again it's all subjective, so I tend to stick to artist grade and open stock pencils only.

    I’ve been waiting like ten years for Derwent to bring out a full set of the drawing pencils. So many of us have bugged them about it. I don’t know why they haven’t 😩

    • @vishneva2000

      I'm holding out hope that news of that might come out in March. A few months ago, their newsletter contained a survey on the Drawing pencils, asking questions about how satisfied was I with the pencils and are there enough colors. I filled it out, trying to strike the right balance between "Yes, I love them. They're amazing" but also, "It would be even better if the line was expanded." So we'll see. A Derwent spokesperson told another channel last summer that any news of expanded rangers of any pencil of theirs would come out in March 2025.

    Great thorough review! I like the grid project. I tend to compare pencils that way as well. You are absolutely right about the Luminance being dry and soft. They take awhile to get used to. I consider the Polys as hard and smooth. Prismas are the softest and smoothest of all the pencils I have used, though Derwent Drawing is close. Derwent Lightfast is hard to place. They are smooth but sometimes sticky. The hardest and driest is definitely Crayola.I could go on and on, but I don’t want to write a novel. Suffice to say I have way too many pencils.😂

    I really appreciate all the directions you went in for this review, but did you like them enough to buy them on your own?

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  6 дней назад +1

      Ah - I specifically didn't say. :) I always feel that unless I really, really, REALLY like a particular product and use it constantly (like my Pitt Pens :)), I don't really have the evidence to suggest whether others should or shouldn't buy based on whether I would or wouldn't buy. :) If you truly want my thoughts - no, I wouldn't buy this set on my own. But that's more because I'm not a pencil colourist and when I do reach for pencils, I'm much more likely to just reach for my Polychromos Plus set (the colours match my Pitt Pens). If folks were looking for a budget pencil that feels similar to the Arrtx pencils but is softer... I'd still wait to see if Ohuhu comes out with a bigger set. And I'd contact Ohuhu to suggest they come out with a bigger set. :) But that's just my two cents - I really don't want anyone to buy anything because of me. :)

    I had the same thoughts re: "oil" pencils vs "wax" pencils. Oil should be softer because it's a liquid at room temp so the classification never made sense from the jump! Anyway I hope more people adopt this classification system because it's better in every way.

  • @susanmorgan5591

    I have the Arrtx, and I don’t need another set like them. I work pretty hard when I color with Arrtx. The hardest pencil I own is the Uni Posca, which is very highly pigmented. Thanks for your thorough review. I think I can live without these.

    Nice video. It would be nice if you used the actual ASTM pencil hardness in your descriptions. For instance Caron D’ache Luminance is a hardness of 8, Caron D’ache Pablos(which I think are hard and creamy), are a hardness of 6, and I think Prismas are a hardness of 8 like the Luminance, but I could be off on the Prisma hardness.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  День назад +1

      Thanks for chiming in! I'm not sure if I could assign ASTM values properly without a psi press to see the max pressure each core could take before snapping - otherwise I'd just be guessing. :) If I had the equipment, I'd totally do that, though! :D

    • @jsscraphappy
      @jsscraphappy 18 часов назад

      @ I didn’t mean for you to test them, and I certainly didn’t mean you should guess as we already have that. i meant that if you research by company, you may find your answers like I did for both Caron D’ache pencils. Sometimes companies publish this information in some form. Then you could add the actual pencil hardness to your chart. I’m sure the information cannot be found easily or quickly, but would be nice info if you could compile it over time. Thanks :-)
