It's definitely a rabbit hole - I had to make myself walk away at one point or there might have been a LOT more items in my collection to compare... (cough, cough... ;)) Glad you enjoyed it! :)
GuangNa now offers dual-tip versions of their 120 and 168 markers. Additionally, Languo has some nice packs of 9 brush-markers, they also have “Gel pens” that actually contain very opaque paint in the same colors as the brush-tips. Grasp is also a brand with more muted/darker colors. All of these are ideal for color-by-number books.
Oh my gosh! I have had the guangna 120 set for a few months now, and I love them. I love the colors. BUT! This whole time, I had no idea if you pull that flap out it pulls the markers out like that!! Literally I did cuticle damage pulling out each marker when swatching!!! I was using the flap to sort of prop up the box a little & thought it seemed flimsy for that purpose. I am both rolling my eyes and laughing at myself. 😅
Hubster hello, good to see your hand and hear your voice. We really enjoy Connie and her talents. Enjoy your movies and stay warm. Blessings for both of you.
I also think about things like this. My thoughts are that there are manufacturers that create the inks and others companies that create and manufacture the vessel/pen casing. Artxx spends much more on marketing to get there name out there. It’s like how Costco puts their Kirkland brand on items like coffee, tinfoil, etc. they don’t manufacture them. You can buy tinfoil from Reynolds’s but Kirkland will cost much less and be the same foil just dif packaging. Thanks for the info. 👍🏻
Well - you know me - I ramble. ;) :) My channel is more about discussing than doing, I suppose. There are lots of great channels out there about the "doing" side of things - you should definitely check those out!
Oh my gosh! I wish I’d seen this before getting the 90 set of Arrtx acrylic markers! I always want the biggest set so that 168 set is calling my name now! I actually watched the sketches.n.scrubs video yesterday and it made me feel kinda icky about how brands are pushing their products and it made me wonder just how many people would be touting Arrtx acrylic markers if they hadn’t been sent out for “free”. Frankly, as I said earlier, I wish I’d seen your video before I went and got my Arrtx set because I’d much rather have that Guangna set. I will say though, at first glance, I prefer the Arrtx packaging over the black box of Guangna… but after you opened the box and I saw the swatch sheet and the way the trays pull out, I was like “oh yeah! Way better choice than Arrtx” especially since it’s essentially the same quality product and bigger quantity and cheaper! Thanks for sharing and enabling me to get another set of pens! Haha!😂
Hello Mr. Colouring Chemist! I don’t own any paint pens except a white Posca (which I really don’t like) and my Arteza white paint pen (which I do). I’ve stayed away from the Wild West of paint pens mostly because there’s so many different kinds, with different sizes and opacity, and honestly, since I can’t get most of them open stock, I just didn’t bother. I love my Pitt Pens, my Polys, and right now that’s enough. 😊 you’re the one that got me hooked on the Pitt Pens and I love them! Currently saving up to get the Staedtler ones and the liquid blender. Thanks for sharing all your thoughts on these, I love how you examine all these products, how you think about them (I’ve thought about the manufacturing process and workers too!) and how you teach us about them. Thanks Connie!
Connie, thank you so much for doing this video!! and No, you aren't alone. As an engineer who has been in chemical manufacturing for over 20 years, I definitely think these things, too 😅 side note, I also feel like if my stress level is above a certain threshold, I have trouble coloring as well.
Interesting video Connie - thank you! You have such an amazing selection of acrylic markers. I really like the fine tip Tooli art, I have several sets of them but would love to get more!
Thanks for watching and commenting, K! Hope you're feeling better! I've got my second cold of the winter and it's almost impossible to film without coughing. So frustrating!
Are these ink or paint? I thought they were paint but maybe there isn’t a difference? TYVM! Arrtx is more expensive because they are sending out free markers for promotion and they have to hire people to run that part of the operation. I have some low price no name acrylic markers and they are good. The GuangNa packaging looks a lot like the Posca markers.
I think they might just be using the phrase "free ink" to describe how the paint flows into the nibs. A previous comment was talking about how the finned delivery system was actually pioneered by the fountain pen makers so maybe they first started calling it a "free ink" system so these companies kept the phrase. I'm just guessing, though. :) I think what's in these markers pens is better classified as "paint" although it's much thinner than most other acrylic paints so that it can flow through a nib. Hope that helps! :)
I really enjoyed your discovery process. Guangna is now in the 62-68 cent range on Ali Express now with amazon Guangna coming in at 83 cents so the price is increasing as of 1/15/25. I'm curious about how long that acrylic stays usable. I know i'm struggling a bit with my 1.5 year old Tooli-Art pens but i also was bad about cleaning the tips. I now have to pull them out and clean them to use them but i still get globs of paint that sometimes comes out and the fine tip they had then can be a pain in the butt to get even coverage. Also i found that the super golden markers are Guangna and i do love those
It really is a "wild west" out there when it comes to these types of items, isn't it? It doesn't surprise me at all that the price is on the rise - it seems like when enough folks "discover" a product, the price automatically goes up. We'll see how they do in the long term! :)
A lot of the Disney color by number groups use these acrylic brush markers. The did claim as well that it’s a better price version than Arrtx. Thanks for confirming!
lol first off, my 10 year old was walking in and I was all outloud “coloring chemist! She’s a chemistry teacher. I haven’t seen her in forever!” And then Mr coloring chemist came on and we giggled forever lol 😝 I’m still trying to figure out what more to do with my acrylic markers except tiny things. When you said “I have so many” I yelled out YESS SHE DOESS! lol I remember your first few videos and you kept getting them. Ps they do have those on temu too. They vary in price tho. They ship locally tho.
Ive had a set of those pens for Christmas from hubby - he knew I wanted acrylic markers and he loves a bargain which is why he got them lol. I was really impressed by the packaging and they seem nice to use - although I haven't got many to compare them too
I will be coming back to watch this fully when I’ve got a bit more time…..but I’m very interested to see what your findings are Connie, I’ve had a small set of those Guang Na acrylic pens for some time and found them adequate for what I want to do ❤
Great video but what’s even better was your colouring with these markers! Those pages are beautiful. I admittedly have a lot of acrylic markers as well and I’ve started doing some full pages with them just to see what I can create. I say colour with them! You are clearly good with this medium!
I have *ahem* a few boxes of those GuangNa markers. The largest set I have is the 168 one. I did find that when you are using them you need to keep an eye on them because with of few of the ones out of the 168 set a huge blob of paint came out suddenly and splashed on my work. Good thing acrylic covers up almost anything so I was able to repair it. But it was just a few of the markers that had/have a tendency to do that. I found that if I held the tip to a paper towel for a few seconds that it drew off the big bubble that had formed at the base of the nib. It always reminded me a kid blowing snot bubbles. (sorry if that is gross). I hope I just ended up with a few faulty ones and it's not going to be a tendency with them. I love them so much and find them so useful in color by numbers, like the books by George Toufexis and Disney Coloriages Mysteres books. No numbers showing through and a large range of colors to match up with the numbered colors. I also use them in my Lulu Mayo books and Millie Marotta books.
Simtap, ink is different to, it’s a shiny water resistant shiny ink not so not so good for mixed media according to Wendy Colours, where as the older brush style are thinner, and matter this better for layering on top of ❤️.
Great video Connie. I appreciate all the research you do for your videos. If I could ever get settled I would love to do similar kinds of videos. If you ever want to corroborate on a video with shared supplies and mediums, paper just let me know. Especially since I’ve got US print of most books. Thank you for your time and effort and absolutely YES, artists and expert hobbyists should get paid to do reviews. Both kinda look like a bribe but I think the companies should sign a form saying a truthful unbiased review is expected. Pffft. Like that will happen.
I had Arrtx markers on my christmas wishlist because they were a tad too pricey for my taste. Thank goodness Lily's video came out in time to take them off, because I think they would have made me sad. I really want an acrylic brush marker, because the plastic fine tips of my Artistro and Tooliart always, always, always clog up on me (the 3 Poscas I have don't, interestingly).
I, too, saw the video of SketchesnScrubs last month, and I sympathize with her situation. I had already been of two minds about getting Arrtx colored pencils and her video made me decide against buying Arrtx products. Good to know that there are comparable alternatives. Thanks for showing how the GuangNa and Arrtx compare in the same pages. I wonder how the GuangNa portion of the pages would fare, like if they would stain the backs of the pages. Btw, if you want pens that cover the line work, Languo might work for you. The pen nibs, though, are thin. Also, another Chinese brand. You have a point about how the GuangNa markers are produced, especially in terms of worker compensation and conditions of work. But there is also the situation of SketchesnScrubs being pressured by Arrtx (according to her story) to produce videos where they required edits and specific content, as if she were an employee on their marketing department. Well, I'm rambling also, so I will end this. Thank you for sharing.
Both Montana Cans (36 matt colors) and Molotow (74 colors total, but glossy colors) All4One acrylic paint markers are all refillable. They both sell empty markers where you can mix two or more of the refill acrylic paints to make your own colors. Please look into these two options if possible.
HI Connie great video. I too have shamefully too many acrylic markers/paint pens mostly cheap brands and some middle range. Not tooli or posca. I also saw sketches video over xmas and was shocked at arrtx's practices and so vowed on there not to buy any more of their items. I am going to let what I have run down and see how I feel at a later date. Not to mention saving money. But it was more what she was saying about getting all the YT contributors to basically work for nothing. Very shady. Hope you are well and loved it when your hubby passed through. Take care.
Thanks for chiming in and sharing your thoughts! Yeah - I need to start really thinking about who/where I'm buying supplies (and books!) from. The only way we can promote change is to "vote" with our wallets. :)
Just watching your video so I thought I would check out how much the G 120 ones cost and they are on amazon for £113. There were cheaper ones which look like they were feom the same company different name of course for £69. Still way over my budget 😢 xx
Sorry, not got to the end yet, but I’m commenting as I go so I don’t forget, frugal Crafter made an interesting observation regarding Arrtx, Guangna? Sp, Paula rebels etc they are all parent companies by light wish, who handle exclusive distribution in some areas. 🧐
You and Mr. CC sound exactly like me and mine -- I lol'd. I haven't watched the entire video yet, so please forgive me if you've already noted this, but none of the companies you mentioned developed the fin-style ink feed. (The "feed" is the actual technical name for that part.) No modern company has. They lifted it straight from fountain pens. I have a c.1920 Moore fountain pen with a finned feed in it, and several other vintage pens on my desk right now, all with finned feeds. These fountain pen finned feeds ALL look *exactly* the same as the one in the "free ink" style pen you held up. So while these companies may have done some development in terms of adapting a specific feed to work with the higher viscosity of acrylic media, the technology itself is over a hundred years old, possibly over 120 years old. I did watch the Sketches.n.Scrubs video in full, and found it compelling. I can't change what a RUclipsr does, but I can absolutely change the direction of my own purchases away from companies with practices I do not agree with, and I do that anyway. But her experiences, especially the one noted that took place during Black History Month . . . omfg. Just . . . NO. I've never been so grateful that I like to sit on my butt and not stand at my desk, lol. EDITED TO ADD: I looked it up, because I am fascinated by these things, and maybe you are as well. E.L. Waterman (and if you're into fountain pens, you'll recognize that last name) was the first to patent a channeled feed for a fountain pen in 1884, which was soon followed by several further refinements; the first finned (aka "comb") feed was patented in 1904 by a gent named August Eberstein. Moritz Pratt over at The Art of Scribing has a great article that goes into what pen feeds and their exact shapes do, but essentially it boils down into three things: delivering a steady flow of ink to the nib, allowing unused ink to drain back from the nib and feed back into the main ink supply, while maintaining a regulated airflow for both that uses the air pressure as a stopper that keeps thin liquid ink from gushing out at unwanted moments.
Thanks so much for doing all that research and sharing the info! I love to learn new things. :) Now I'm thinking about how the shape and spacing of the fins would change the fluid dynamics of the ink - thinking makes me happy. :D And yeah - I've been thinking more and more about where I choose to spend my money. I know I'm only one person but I suppose every bit makes a difference - at least, I hope it does. :)
@@colouringchemist Oooh, I love nerdy. Thinking, esp puzzling out how to make materials do what you want them to, makes me happy too! Whether our individual voices make any difference to anyone else is a question without certain answer, but I'll tell you something that is certain beyond doubt: it matters to YOU, that you are acting in ways that reflect the person you want to be, and it matters to ME that there are still people individually concerned with community as well as self, and acting ethically in accord with those values. It's enough. I am so immensely pleased when I find individuals in the wild who still care about what actions make up a worthy life that I can't be bothered with trying to measure the size of the ripples we make. It's enough that we still exist :D Thank you for your kind reply, it made my day. Have a great evening!
I kind of feel the same about color pencils, alcohol markers, and acrylics. I think pretty deeply about it. Like are chemicals that different from brand to brand. Why is a Crayola pencil cheaper than Prisma....? Haha ive asked that same questions as well. It leads down a huge rabbit holes for sure. 😅
Hmmm... why artttks costs more? Because they want more money! Isn't it obvious? They are a brand, they are everywhere on RUclips , they know that people will pay asking price. If guangna would become a popular brand, they will be more expensive. And no artttks, neither guangna will pay their workers more because of it, I'm sure those markers are made on same factory.
Maybe arrtx thinking that you are bargaining for money in exchange for paid reviews because there are creators who were prior to you were asking money for paid reviews. I still think paid reviews are unethical and as a consumer i dont find them trustworthy. Maybe arrtx is more expensive because they do a lot of marketing to get their products out there. More Creators / influencers asking to be paid for reviews will push the prices higher. This is what is happening a lot to the beauty community.. example those press junket travel vacation packages / benefit given to top tier influencer in exchange for featuring their products.
Nice to hear from Mr coloring chemist. The rabbit hole of acrylic markers is always fun. Always interesting to hear your thoughts!
It's definitely a rabbit hole - I had to make myself walk away at one point or there might have been a LOT more items in my collection to compare... (cough, cough... ;))
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Very cute that Mr. Coloring Chemist supports your hobbies!
He supports mine and I support his (he mountain bikes :)). It's a good partnership. :)

Loved that beautiful moment with your hubby, that's so nice, Connie ❤
He's the best - I think I'll keep him (we've been married 28 years ;)). :)

Ah - you must find the world of art supplies as fascinating as I do! SO much chemistry to dig into!! :D
Always enjoy your deep dives. It’s good to get answers to questions we all have. Hi Mr CC😂
Glad you enjoyed it! And Mr CC says hello! :)
I have some Pental pens that have the fin system, reminds me of a syringe. And I have some Highlighters with the same delivery system.
Ah - good to know! Thanks! :)

And yeah - I've been thinking more and more about where I choose to spend my money.
It's enough that we still exist :D
Thank you for your kind reply, it made my day. Have a great evening!
Thank you for the informative video.😊
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
168 GuangNa Acrylic Brush Markers from Temu £69.63 Really good in Johanna Basford books, etc.
Good to know! :)
Ooooo... I love digging and researching stuff like that, too. :)
Glad I'm not alone. 😂
Awww.
:)
Cute Connie.
Thanks! :)
Hmmm... why artttks costs more? Because they want more money! Isn't it obvious? They are a brand, they are everywhere on RUclips , they know that people will pay asking price. If guangna would become a popular brand, they will be more expensive. And no artttks, neither guangna will pay their workers more because of it, I'm sure those markers are made on same factory.
Thanks for chiming in! Food for thought - definitely! :)
Thanks for chiming in and sharing your thoughts! :)
