  • In this video, I’m reviewing Tauer Perfumes L'Oudh, a captivating fragrance that showcases Tauer’s unique take on oud. This scent is all about deep, resinous woods with an intense and smoky oud at its heart, layered with Tauer’s signature rich and textured style. I’ll explore how L'Oudh masterfully balances the dark, earthy facets of oud with a touch of spice and resin, making it feel both mysterious and refined. If you’re a fan of bold, daring oud fragrances that stand out from the crowd, L'Oudh is a must-try. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more in-depth fragrance reviews!

    Great video! I really want to try Andy's stuff but its very hard to come by in the states. Maybe I'll see if he has a sample set that i can play with. Now, onto the long comment with my theories 🤣
    As I'm looking forward to jumping the gun on that deal of silver oud i mentioned earlier, I'm also getting into DIY perfumery! I'm choosing silver oud as one of my first formulas to emulate, since I'm fortunate enough to be in contact with someone that has a very accurate formula to study for a good price. L'oudh seems like an ode to oud in the similar vein of Amouage's Silver Oud as well, although with each perfumer's respective takes on the variety of oud they worked with:
    (take with a grain of salt since i haven't tried l'oudh or any tauer, but really do plan to soon! and the silver oud batches i tried have probably also had a bit more time to sit, so more oomph in animalics compared to your 'I' batch)
    - Tauer's site specifically mentions oud from laos, which can either be from the Aquilaria crassna, Aquilaria malaccensis, or Aquilaria sinensis varities. Sinensis is usually found in borneo, and usually associated with the clean, incense and spice aspect of the wood. Malaccensis is generally a wild variety, and it can have animalic aspects, but often also comes with some smoky nuances and most uniquely jammy fruit notes. Crassna, what i believe this can be as the descriptors match up, is often associated with Thai(smooth) and cambodian(skanky) varieties and the cambodian in particular can have strong animalic tones and potent dry woods veering on paint varnish. This can contribute to a lot of the 'pissy' nature you speak of, and Andy's dosage of the quality he has along with the other supporting ingredients help to carry that personality onward. I also suspect that his castoreum accord is probably synthetic, and those capture the faux leather, almost plasticky nature of it pretty damn well. Andy chose to fill out and balance the formula with sweet ambery resins, that probably accentuated what the oud already offered.
    - Silver Oud seems to share a lot of the same notes as L'oudh in the core, but altered to capture the personality of varieties of oud found in the Indian subcontinent: stemming from Aquilaria agallocha. This focuses a bit more on the fecal, indolic propertes that mingle with strong smoky leather and smooths out into almost a spiced fur. It blends in with cypriol amazingly, which is why the two are seen together a ton - and sure enough from what I see in a formulation of silver oud I'm working with, cypriol oil is in double digit percents of the composition! There also is an approach to animalics that are more natural at the core, unafraid to bring aspects of that fecal nature since ambrarome is a labdanum product laced with fecal, milky, overall musky ingredients, and the castoreum in it seems to be genuine. The only ingredients pulling these back are solid hits of vanilla which probably mingles with the also huge amount of patchouli to make the experience slightly more palatable to your personal taste than the approach in L'oudh. (also finding quite a bit of solvent in the silver oud formula, which could mean it may have been watered down over formulations... or maybe just added in to help the huge dose of naturals dissolve. who knows? but i don't think Tauer's operation would need to result to reformulation like amouage has without him telling his audience first)
    Overall, I find these two really interesting in their perceived differences while a ton of the notes and general vibe seems to be in the same ballpark! They're both extremely high quality. It's a testament to how perfumery is so nuanced, and how even just the variety in one natural can alter the intention behind the final product.

    • @SeldomlyOften
      @SeldomlyOften  3 месяца назад +1

      @@ethanrrs hey! Your comment is definitely detailed and super interesting! All I can say from my point of view is that Silver Oud and Tauer’s smell NOTHING like each other, not even in the same family of frags. Silver Oud is creamy and smooth, base heavy, warm and enveloping. Tauer’s take is bitter, dry, woody, with a focus on top and midrange.

    • @ethanrrs
      @ethanrrs 3 месяца назад

      @@SeldomlyOften and that's probably by intent as well! The nature of the ouds used probably play to those respective levels of the pyramid as you notice, and so the perfumers probably also gave respective bumps to the ratios of ingredients that reflect the nuances- in a similar way to how kurkdjian made gentle fluidity gold and silver from the same materials. Andy's additional usage of mechanic-shop styrax, plasticky castoreum, with whatever radiant possibly metallic musk probably contributes the most to that difference, where silver oud is grounded in a bath of cypriol and patchouli vibrating at the base level like you said. Silver oud also has a good bit of iso e super and maybe you're a little anosmic to that if it isn't as radiant in top notes personally

    • @SeldomlyOften
      @SeldomlyOften  3 месяца назад +1

      @@ethanrrs I’m very anosmic to ISO E, Smells like nothing to me! Thanks for the info 😊

    • @ethanrrs
      @ethanrrs 3 месяца назад

      @@SeldomlyOften no problem! The iso e in silver oud probably serves to envelope the whole thing and lift it for a bit, so not as a full-on note, but yeah, I barely smell it on its own either. Seems to be the case that through the overuse of iso e in the wild in nearly every perfume, and the introduction of stronger chemicals that overpower it, people get a bit anosmic. And some Amouages with a good chunk of iso e may have even never been reformulated or just a little bit, like epic and memoir. They're more victims of the current state of the industry's stronger chemicals, haha
