    I like mine too. I wash the B side while vacuuming the treated A side. Saves some time that way. I also marked one of the finger holes in the record turner puck to keep track of the number of rotations I've made. I just received my bearing upgrade and it looks like it will be a nice improvement. Thanks for making the video.

    Good review, to save time when you flip the record and vacuum the side 1 at the same time put solution on the side two and clean it , this way once your side one is vacuumed you can flip it and start side two...

    Looks nice. I've been on the fence about getting one of these kinds of devices. Was thinking about the Spin Clean, but, really, for not much more, I like the idea of having a vacuum on the machine. Great demo!!
    It's on my Christmas Wish List now!!! I'm just hoping Mrs. Claus is willing to indulge me. Otherwise, I'll be waiting until bonus season rolls around (February).
    I have a local store that sells all the Record Doctor cleaning fluids. They might even carry this RCM. But, given that Audio Advisor is a Michigan company, I don't mind ordering from them.
    Hey.... other posters here.... Be nice! Even if you aren't impressed with the machine, Mike here just did a nice thing for all of us.

    I own 1. I absolutely love this RDV!! I used mine for the first time yesterday and it definitely does the job. My only complaint after its 1st use is the drain hole. It doesn't seem large enough to drain all the water out when you are done. But other than that this little thing works great. By the way I did the bearing upgrade as well. I used this in conjunction with my spin clean and I am completely satisfied with how it sucks all the crap out of the grooves. 2 👍👍s way up!!!

      Sitting at my desk, I actually set up my spin clean on my right side and the RD on my left. I clean my records in the spin clean, making about 10 to 12 spins clockwise then the same counter clockwise the flip the record and do it again. Then pull the record out, shake most of the water off then transfer the record to the RD. Then I spin the record forwards 6 to 8 times each direction then flip the record and repeat the process using a fiber cloth to dry the side that was first dried then flip and repeat. Easy. If the record is super dirty I clean again.

    Great video and this helped me with my new RD V. Spinning at the end like you said while it turns off gets rid of the verticle streak! Also I apply cleaner at opposite ends of the record so it gets applied evenly.
    Quick questions: Are you sure using a paint applicator is safe for the LPs? Also about how often do you need to change the strips on the actual machine? Thanks again!

  • @jknapper76
    @jknapper76 8 лет назад +1

    Mike - thanks for posting this. Do you think the vacuum is powerful enough to remove the embedded dust between the grooves? I have several records that certainly look clean and some that have been cleaned with the Spin Clean and also look clean but they are still noisy from what I am assuming is the embedded dust in the grooves. If this thing will suck that stuff out, I think I'm going to pull the trigger. Thanks again.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  8 лет назад +2

      It does a good job, IMO, but I've never actually seen the results microscopically. The vacuum is very concentrated, so I think it does help. The main thing is to get the dirt particles suspended, and the vacuum carries all that away. That's the principle anyway!

    Mike, I bought this Record Doctor V machine. Spent the whole small bottle of the liquid that came with it. I tried to drain it by unplugging the hole on bottom, but all that came out were a couple of drops. I expected at least 3/4s of the bottle to pour out. What am I doing wrong?

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  6 лет назад +2

      Vlad Grigorian Hmm. You spent the whole bottle in one go? Yeah, I’d expect more to come out. I doubt you’re doing anything wrong! Can you hear the solution sloshing around in the box? As I recall, the hole is quite small, and the bottom is flat (on the inside, too, as far as we know), so you might have to tilt the box around quite a bit to get more to drain out.
      The one time I drained mine (I tend to do very small batches, so don’t bother draining it), I got a relatively small amount of water out. But as I say in the video, I’m in a very dry climate, so whatever was left I didn’t worry much about.
      Maybe poke a toothpick up in the hole to ensure it’s clear?

    • @VladVonGrigorian
      @VladVonGrigorian 6 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the reply. Well, it wasnt one go. I got the machine a week ago. Cleaned at least 50LPs since. There is nothing sloshing inside if Itilit it or shake it. Like it is empty. But it does clean, I removed everything and simply put my finger to the sucking side and it does suck the air in. So, it does work. Still, a bottle went somewhere I have no idea where. I'll try the toothpick, a good idea, may be the clear tube is bent, who knows.

    Thanks, Mike, for the excellent review. I have just one complaint. I dont get to ask you a single question because all the answers are already in the video and the description. Good job, buddy!
    I will order my very own unit tomorrow, when my $13 Ebay Bucks certificate become redeemable. Couldn't decide between this and an Okki Nokki, but you convinced me. The fact that you can rotate the platter as slow or fast as you want on the Record Doctor - which you mentioned here - was the deciding factor.

      @VladVonGrigorian 6 лет назад +1

      Mike, my unit arrived today. Re-watching your video after reading the manual. I had a question but the answer was in your video. The question was about the lower platter - do I use it with the reflective side up or the rubber side? Your video shows the rubber side up, which make sense because the upper platter goes on top of the record with the rubber side down, so the label wouldn't be damaged. Once again, thanks for the great video and for recommending this model. Your points on advantages of it (the small platter, spinning in either direction, the simplicity of it) were all well made.

  • @lemmy999
    @lemmy999 6 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the great review. I am thinking of getting one but I have a few reservations.
    1. with nothing under the record while you are cleaning it, it seems that you wouldn't be able to put very much pressure on the record without flexing it. Or do you only clean in the area where the vacuum slot is so that gives support from the bottom side?
    2. While you are cleaning the first side, the unclean side is being rubbed (dry) on the brush surrounding the vacuum slot getting those dirty. Is that a problem?
    3. Any residue left? I was thinking after cleaning it might be nice to pour a little distilled water on then vacuuming clean again.
    4. Will it do different size records? It seems a 45 wouldn't fully cover the vacuum slot.
    5. Can you remove and clean the brushes around the vacuum slot?
    Thanks!

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  6 лет назад +2

      lemmy999 Glad you enjoyed the review. 1) Apply fluid over the vacuum slot. 2) Yes, that’s a minor concern that I share. Hasn’t been a problem in practice. Consider, though, that other designs have you put the “down side”, possibly just cleaned, onto a felt disc. Trade-offs, I guess. 3) A little, sometimes. I think its reasonable for people to come up with their own practices on such things. 4) I think your theory is correct re 45s. 5) In theory there are replacement “lips” for the vacuum slot. I sometimes just hit it with the little cleaning brush from my old-school Discwasher kit.

    Fantastic review - thanks Mike. I have a lot of new vinyl which I carbon brush (dry) and put in Nagaoka plastic sleeve liners. Could you use this machine dry to get rid of the paper dust and stuff from the sleeves of the new records before putting them in the Nagaoka ones? I don't really feel a wet clean of a brand new record would be necessary.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  9 лет назад +1

      I don't see why you couldn't. It would hold the record while you use your brush to lift away the crud. I sometimes use a photography "dust blower" for that kind of thing, but it doesn't get everything off and possibly causes static electricity.

    • @kevinfetner7983
      @kevinfetner7983 5 лет назад +2

      Wrong....I've bought NEW vinyl that was so dirty you could easily see it with your eyes. You should ALWAYS clean a NEW record before playing it. If you don't you can literally embed dirt particles into your groves....with a chance that it will be permanent. Thinking that NEW records come antiseptically clean is a Fool's Paradise.

    I was just showing someone this video so they could see what I have. I bought one years ago when I decided a dime per record I owned was worth the investment. Works great, I think the guy below talking about rinsing is over thinking it or whatever, I'm not worried about the residue whatever that may be when I'm making a dirty ass Kinks record at least listenable.

  • @dsims5066

    Mike,
    Great review. I was just wondering if there is any worries about putting the dirty side down first and exposing the vacuum felt pieces to whatever is on the lp. I would hate to have that grime, mold, etc. put back onto a side that I just scrubbed.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  9 лет назад +1

      The record actually sits a bit above the vacuum lips, so if you don't press down too hard, you're probably fine. When you turn on the vacuum, that pulls the record down onto the lips. I suppose you can also brush off the felt after each side (which I generally do). I haven't noticed any issue from the design, but I don't obsess too much, to be honest.

    Mike,Thanks for sharing this video I've been interested in one of these machines for a very long time & with over 3,000 Lp's it might just work for me. One thing I noticed is that the plate you use to spin the record on does not cover the whole label? Not that it will be a big problem ( I just don't want to see the label getting wet that's all) & the bearing you're saying I should invest in the aftermarket one? Yep I agree they should have made that part a bit better!!!
    The only other thing that's kind of stopping me is the Noise!!! (I live in a co-op with paper thin walls) so I'll have to do it on the weekend or when I get home.. Other then that I think I might get one so Thanks again !!

    This seems pretty cool and I'd love to buy one, but I'm curious as to why you would wash records in the sink (mentioned at 5:27). Do you use distilled water? If tap water I'd imagine the copper, magnesium, and whatever other minerals that are present in tap water would damage the record over time and leave residue in the grooves.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  9 лет назад +1

      Eric People who can't afford, or don't want to spend money on, vacuum machines, might choose to use the sink. Yes, I used distilled water for the rinse. Once washed, I wouldn't expect a well-cared for record to need washing again for a long time. I have a video on the process, if you want to look it up.

  • @dirtymugss
    @dirtymugss 8 лет назад +1

    I have been waffling on purchasing one of these for some time, and yours is the first video I have viewed of it in action. I can live with standard equipment for a bit, but would most likely upgrade as you have. And I would, of course, get a cover from your buddy because, you know!
    Anyway, I do have a question; when you start the cleaning process and place an uncleaned/dirty record on the machine, does the fact that the felt around the vacuum slot will be in contact WITH a dirty/uncleaned side as the other side gets a bath 'n scrub, a cause for concern? At first glance, it seems counterproductive; almost like toweling off BEFORE you take a shower.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. Yes your concern is a minor concern of mine. I don't worry too much since my records start out pretty clean. If you have a really grungy one, you might want to sink-wash it first, and then use the record cleaner on subsequent cleanings (I have a video on that, too somewhere here on my channel).
      I'm sure Jason would appreciate the business. He's pretty much perfected the covers at this point.

  • @jesusgavemeaids

    I watched a bunch of videos & scrolled through the forums on how to make a DIY record cleaning machine & just made my own for basically nothing. The only parts that cost any money was fluid because I prefer a certain fluid. & a mofi brush ($20)...oh & of course new mofi inner sleeves were also $20 for a pack of 50. Very important to put newly cleaned records in New inner sleeves. But I already had an old broken turntable, a mini shop vac, so didn't need to spend any money there. I made an attachment for the shop vac that fits over the spindle & sucks up the dirty solution. It works great!

    • @jesusgavemeaids
      @jesusgavemeaids 4 года назад

      I also prefer a solution that doesn't contain alcohol. I like to let the solution soak for a few minutes at least. Even on new records, but especially on older or dirtier records. It helps loosen up some of the crud. & a solution with alcohol dries way too quickly. & yes I even clean brand new records.

    • @jesusgavemeaids
      @jesusgavemeaids 4 года назад

      Oh & another thing. Before I apply any fluid or use the mofi brush, I have an extra old carbon fiber brush I use for the cleaning process only, & use it to try to get any loose crud off before doing the wet clean process. (Not the same carbon fiber brush I use on a record before each play, but a different one specifically for this)

  • @denicesharpe3155

    Very good record cleaner. I just purchased one. As the reviewer states, the "brush".. and I really do hate to call it that... is complete rubbish. I ended up getting the type of brush that the reviewer used and it works like an absolute champ.
    I have a large number of records that I picked up for a dollar that I could not clean to a listenable state with my old brush cleaner and the record doctor dropped the noise floor down to almost zero.
    VERY well worth the investment if you are even remotely serious about collecting vinyl. No need to spend 600 plus on a cleaning machine when 200 will get you anywhere you need to go. Spend the extra 400 on vinyl!

      the dust line is caused by the felt on the machine collecting the dust from that side of the record while you are spinning/washing the other side. The reason you only see it on that one side is when you are washing the other side, the side that is touching the machine is already clean. Hope that makes sense.

    Question: The handle (for lack of a better word) that you use to hand-rotate the record, does that screw on over the record? How does it grip the record? Is it rubber on the bottom and just by sheer weight maybe the record turns without slipping? I have a do-it-yourself setup and am looking for a way to conveniently add some sort of hand crank for turning the record while brushing and vacuuming, but if this thing really works that well I might go for it. The one on this unit looks like it has finger holes; can you simply put your finger in one of the holes and spin it that way or do you need to apply some pressure while doing it?

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  6 лет назад

      Arthur Robillard It’s just a wooden puck with a rubber circle on the bottom of it. I think the “idea” is you’d use a finger, but it really makes more sense to just put light pressure on it with multiple fingers. You’re squeezing the record between the small “turntable” of the cleaner and the puck. Very simple minimalist design. Best of luck.

I see in the video when you put the platter back on you also put on an O ring to secure it. The following platter that came with the record doctor v didn't have an O ring & neither did the new platter that came with the new bearing.

      Matt Weigand Hehe, no, I never got around to it. I think it's something like 90% distilled water, 10% high-purity isopropyl alcohol, and a few drops of LFN (surfactant for film development) in a small-to-medium size bottle. I don't make large quantities of it. Some people get all bent out of shape over the alcohol, but it helps with evaporation, and I haven't run into any issues. YMMV.

    200.00 seems to be quite a lot for this machine. It is just a vacuum and as you say the bearing is not great, i believe you replaced it. You said the person at the company said that was not a problem, well for that much money I would think it is... Also I watched some videos about cleaning records and they say never put the cleaner directly on your albums, what is your opinion about that? I have a little over a thousand albums I want to keep clean. This machine does not impress me that much. Are there other systems out there that are better than this one? Thanks, Troy

      If you think $200 is a lot for a RCM you haven't done much shopping! This is the cheapest one I know of, aside from maybe finding it used. All RCMs are overpriced if you're a reductionist (for example, calling it "just a vacuum").
      Yes, definitely the original bearing is a joke. I replaced it with a larger one from a different company for less than $20. And yes, I was disappointed in the "engineering" that went into that one, as well. The latter is the one where the seller said "not a problem". I disagree with him in principle (and physics :-)). In use though, it is definitely better than the original bearing. Keep in mind, all you really need to get done is to rotate the record with a reasonable amount of ease. Either bearing approximates that.
      In the end, it's a pretty well put-together machine that does what it is designed to do: clean records efficiently and effectively (in my experience). The cost is reasonable, if you consider the competition. Yes, you could build your own or cobble together some process by which to get the same effect, but if you value your time, I'd call it a false economy.
      That said, I'm not a shill for this company. There may well be better ways to approach record cleaning, but this one works for me.
      Regarding other videos on cleaning. Opinions are like belly-buttons, everyone has one (including me). The internet just makes it worse. People tend to get waaaaaay too anal and weird about record cleaning, IMO.

    i am hoping that they have improved that machine a lot. I had one fail by having the impeller blades break off inside. i thought, ok, i will just open the bottom. turned it over and found the bottom to be hot glued shut.
    alrighty then, i have to bash it in and i will just get another piece of fiberboard and glue it in when i am done. so i break into it and this is when i find the impeller blades all broken of. well, i will get an allen wrench or screwdriver and remove the collet that holds the blades and order a new blade part.
    no such luck, it was a press fit. then i will just remove the motor. nope, it was hot glued, just like the fiberboard bottom. i know, i will call the company and they will have an economical solution. well, NO, they want $100 plus shipping.
    the only way i can solve this is to glue another bottom in and then drill a hole big enough to hook up a small shop vac to it. so there it sits. overall, wasted money. i bought a SpinClean instead and after cleaning the record in the bath, rinse with my reverse osmosis spigot and then dry with a microfiber cloth, and dry in a rack.
    actually, in lieu of a rack, i bought several clear plastic easels (the kind yWalmartt display a plate wieth). they were from Walmart called Mainstays 8 inck Tabletop Easel.
    the spinclean works way better than you would expect and it is much cheaper than ANY ready made vacuuming machine such as rec dr or even the KAB device that takes a vac like i was planning.
    i really do hate being the bearer of bad news but the rec dr can be a waste of money.

      Thomas Roy Wow, that sucks. Hopefully that's an unusual occurrence, rather than the rule. But it doesn't matter for you -- a bad experience over all. The Spin Clean seems like a good solution. I sink-washed my records before getting the RDV. Worked pretty well, and the Spin Clean is possibly better.

    • @hifitommy
      @hifitommy 7 лет назад

      hey mike,
      when i washed in the sink, i used one of those red directional velvet brushes for lint that you can get for a buck at the dollar stores, a droplet of dawn and scrubbed lightly on both sides, rinsed (a lot with a sink sprayer) and dried with paper towels (not really bad for the records). the spin clean is better but if i get one with a lot of dirt, i sink wash it first.
      one can get an ultrasonic cleaner for about $600 albeit without the drying feature which would be another $120.
      i enjoy your YTs , what number are you up to now?

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  7 лет назад

      When I was sink washing I used the same microfiber brush-y thing I use now with the RDV. I believe I used a microfiber towel to dry. I think I actually did a video about it (speaking of my video count). Paper towels probably don't do any damage, but they do have glue in them that might leave a residue, but probably nothing atrocious. People get a little weird about records :-).
      I'm over 350 videos, if you count ALL of them. Probably over 200 are somewhat worthwhile to somebody, somewhere :-). Thanks for watching!

    I agree the design seems good but vacuuming is not necessary. I have cleaned several hundred records without vacuuming with excellent results. What I don't understand is why so many people using a device like this don't rinse the records. If this device and others like it don't have directions that recommend rinsing the records it only further illustrates the fact vacuuming is not necessary for the manufacturer doesn't even understand how to correctly clean records.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  10 лет назад +1

      Interesting point. You could be right.
      However, do you feel the rinsing is required in order to get rid of whatever additives the washing fluid has in it, or to carry the dirt away? If it's the former, I think most fluids are probably 95% or greater distilled water and the vacuum pulls most of that away. In my dry climate the record is mostly dry when I pull it off the machine. If it's the latter, that's what the vacuum is for -- to ensure the gunk that you dislodged doesn't just settle back down.
      Anyway, my method before this was to sink wash. It might have been more effective at actually removing stuff because it's a "bath", and much more fluid is used, but then the records either had to be towel dried (what I did), which always kind of bothered me, or purely air-dried, which left the chance of remaining gunk re-settling or dust falling onto the records as they sat there. And if you don't use distilled water on both sides you run the risk of introducing mineral deposits to the record surface.
      So, basically I think of this RCM as a labor-saving device. It's probably as good as sink washing, but 100x more convenient.
      You should do a video on your technique. It would be interesting. Be warned, though, you'll probably get critiques, too -- everyone's an expert on RUclips ;-).

    • @aparneomai
      @aparneomai 10 лет назад

      Mike Thomas Actually I did make a video several months ago demonstrating how to use a specific product. The product I use requires a rinse otherwise as you pointed out residue from the cleaner will remain on the surface and be audible. Regardless of what is used some residue from the cleaner will remain if not properly rinsed. How much remains depends on the concentration of the solution used and as you also pointed out most cleaning solutions are likely very high in water content. I don't use Loyd Walkers product and don't plan on but he points out in a video just drying your hair after washing isn't an effective way of cleaning. Using a cleaner high in water and sticking your head into a vacuum tube may suck most of the debris off your hair making it appear clean it will still be dirty.

    • @kevinfetner7983
      @kevinfetner7983 5 лет назад

      This is an endless debate and without a controlled study in a lab with microscopic examination, ya'll are just assuming your facts to be true and/or utilizing confabulation. Usually, the more money you pay for a product, the better you feel it does. And in many cases, a low priced product has to mean an 'inferior' product. We used to call that 'stepping over dollars to pick up pennies'. I bought this unit (never used it yet) that sets your records up vertically....then you use a special nozzle attached to your sink faucet or hose, cleaning the record in a specified pattern. Finish by using a liquid 'preservative' type substance. I can't say one way or another about this process since I haven't used it.....other than my vote would be outside with better pressure than the sink faucet. Again, without science backing me up, any claims would be subjective. There is KNOWN, however, that there are substances that can harm vinyl......so at least do the research on that.

    microfiber cloths and your microfibre paint brush leave material fibres on the record. You should be using a carbon fibre brush to work in the cleaning fluid. You should never touch your records with tap water !!!!!
    And you wonder why there is dust/microscopic material filaments on your record after cleaning that you remove with your carbon brush. No carbon brush is going to remove the calcium and other deposits left from the tap water.. Your records probably are in worse condition after you have cleaned them with your method.

    So: It requires, a cover, which is not available. The bearing on the floppy little spindle is a piece of junk, so you replaced that. The brush is a piece of junk, so you bought a little paint applicator from Home Depot. The small bottle of cleaning fluid is quickly used up and way overpriced. And the RD V is terribly noisy. And you say we’d be nuts not to buy this?
    For a third of the price and no great effort I can build something myself that will do the same job without all of these deficiencies. The recipe for making your own cleaning fluid in large quantities is readily available, too.

      Cover not required. I wanted one. Got it for free from a friend.
      Yes, the supplied bearing sucks, but it works OK. Replacement is dirt cheap, but not required.

      I do make my own cleaning fluid, though perhaps I didn't mention it or wasn't using it at the time.

      You'd only be nuts not to consider it if you are *actually interested in buying a record cleaner*. Apparently you aren't that interested, or perhaps you haven't comparison shopped. aquavitvibes72 Yeah, I've used the sink, too. I even have a video about it. This is quicker and neater, IMO. Other folks can decide for themselves whether it's a waste of money.

      They can decide, but don`t say I did not warn them. Most People will probably regret it. ust not enough benefits to defend the price.

    What a pile of rubbish you go on about not having a platter and that is better but you're forgetting that the Velvet lips are touching the dirty record surface and is transferred onto the clean surface vacuum pump idea is not the best way to dry it just let it dry naturally you're introducing more dirt from the air and causes of static charge. Take the Velvet lips off might help and a stopper on the end. Don't use tap water distilled or deionized only

      Air dry is only good if you're using 100% pure water...
