Yes, it's called borrowed chords, which is either from the parallel minor of that F major or vice versa. So using C dominant 7 it sounds well and resolves to F major. Better chord progressions and all these nuances are well used first in Ilaiaraja and Shyam sir. They are great in using western chirds in their compostion!!

Great video! Like you said, there can be different perspective of listening to a song. On a glance we might only hear the main melody and instruments, but when you start listening deeper, you start hearing newer sound elements that enhances the song. Ilayaraja, Sharath and now Santhosh Narayanan. These three gentlemen are very specialised in setting unconventional chords. Of course not forgetting Rahman sir but his style is very different from this. He also has experimented unconventional chords in many songs. But the reason I highlighted these three people is because there is a sort of liveliness in their chords. I don't know what to call it. That's like a ride it literally takes us to some other world
Dear Mervin, thank you for the video ❤. Any thoughts on harmonising raga based songs? Like pentatonic ragas or unconventional ones where diatonic chords are not always a possibility? Or can triads be used even if the chords have some notes which the raga may not have? Asking as a hobbyist.
Ya.... Diatonic stuff in case of harmony brings in a lot of harmonic options due to the limitations.... But going out of the raga in terms of harmony is also exciting.... But everything depends upon ur taste and musicality.... 😊

First of all harmony is a western concept. I think you have not heard much of western classical arrangements. Otherwise you haven’t got settled with these Malayalam song arrangements.

The biggest let down in our music industry is the mastering . The 70's 80's and most of 90's malayalam sonhs are mastered very bright and sounds thin. I noticed this when i listened so some old records from europe of pop, rock and metal from the 70's and 80's and they sound so amazing.

Ilaiyaraja ആണ് chord usage ന്റെ കാര്യത്തിൽ genius. പല രാഗങ്ങളും പല സംഗീത സംവീധായകരും ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ, usual major minor chords വക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്തത് കൊണ്ട് സ പ സ വക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതെ രാഗത്തിൽ പാട്ടുകൾ ilaiyaraja ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ വെസ്റ്റേൺ ക്ലാസിക്കലിലെ rare chords, jazz chords ഒക്കെ യൂസ് ചെയ്യാറുണ്ട്.അതും അപാര chord progression വച്ചു ചെയ്തു വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.ഈ കാര്യത്തിൽ ഒന്നും ഇളയരാജയോട് ആരെയും compare ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റില്ല.

Yes, it's called borrowed chords, which is either from the parallel minor of that F major or vice versa. So using C dominant 7 it sounds well and resolves to F major. Better chord progressions and all these nuances are well used first in Ilaiaraja and Shyam sir. They are great in using western chirds in their compostion!!

Ilayaraja, Sharath and now Santhosh Narayanan. These three gentlemen are very specialised in setting unconventional chords. Of course not forgetting Rahman sir but his style is very different from this. He also has experimented unconventional chords in many songs. But the reason I highlighted these three people is because there is a sort of liveliness in their chords. I don't know what to call it. That's like a ride it literally takes us to some other world

Dear Mervin, thank you for the video ❤. Any thoughts on harmonising raga based songs? Like pentatonic ragas or unconventional ones where diatonic chords are not always a possibility? Or can triads be used even if the chords have some notes which the raga may not have? Asking as a hobbyist.
Ya.... Diatonic stuff in case of harmony brings in a lot of harmonic options due to the limitations.... But going out of the raga in terms of harmony is also exciting.... But everything depends upon ur taste and musicality.... 😊

The out u hear right now is from the midiculous keys plugin... Which is used to show the keyboard in the video...... It has minimum sounds in it.... Will make it better in later videos...

The biggest let down in our music industry is the mastering . The 70's 80's and most of 90's malayalam sonhs are mastered very bright and sounds thin. I noticed this when i listened so some old records from europe of pop, rock and metal from the 70's and 80's and they sound so amazing.
It is not exactly the issue with mastering i think.... The programming itself lacked the proper frequency distribution and full usage of spectrum....
@@jakal1591 yes late 90s esp. Ousepp Vidya songs were stringently having good quality. Johnson മാഷിന്റെതും tones spectrum more or less same ആണെങ്കിലും quality നന്നായിരുന്നു.

@@bliss9030late 90s മുതൽ ആണ് non leniar software യൂസ് ചെയ്തു തുടങ്ങിയത്, അതിന്റെ മെച്ചം പലർക്കും കിട്ടി.ഔസെപ്പച്ഛൻ, മോഹൻ സിതാര, രവീന്ദ്രൻ എന്നിവരുടെ ഒക്കെ ആദ്യ കാല songs ഒക്കെ bad mixing ആയിരുന്നു (95നു മുന്നേ ഉള്ളത് ). പക്ഷേ ആ കാലത്തും johnson മാസ്റ്ററുടെ പാട്ടുകൾ good mix and mastered ആയിരുന്നു. Says a lot about his sensibility.
