I just love you, your channel, your family, your journey... I'm not on the homestead journey, but I love growing things. More importantly, your voice and your stories soothe my soul and help it rest. It's healing listening to you. Bless you and yours right back. 💖
100%. Whenever I am stressed, Roots and Refuge is my resting place. It feeds my soul. Thank you Jess for your sharing your beautiful family, life and words of wisdom :)
I hope this makes you smile Jess, I've been cooking in kitchens for 12 years, and of those years that I've gotten to flex my creative muscles as a chef/sous chef, you and your channel have been a huge inspiration for me ❤
I love "the challenge " My ex didn't give me any feed back on my cooking. None! The good, the bad, or the ugly! Miah has taste buds and he knows how to use em! Love your journey❤❤.
I've always had gardens. Yes I had to buy from the store as well. Now, I only buy flour, sugar, salt, yeast..some meats ..paper & laundry products from the store. When people were seeing shortages..we shopped our pantries. Thank you Granny for all your teachings.
My daughter ate at a restaurant recently with her husband in a larger town and they had rosemary sprigs in their drinks and watermelon radishes as garnishes. She sent me a picture and we were so excited! Because we've never seen people in real life serve what we grow! Lol
Y’all are such a precious family. I find myself smiling, while watching your videos. The cows might love Miah for him being the feed boss, but I think it’s also for his gentle, caring presence. Having been married going on 54 years this August, the love I see between you and Miah, is an unconditional love that deepens in each passing year. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, may the Lord lift His countenance toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 ❤️✝️🙏
We have ducks. If you cook the older ones in a slow cooker on a bed of potatoes, it comes out incredibly tender. I put citrus in the cavity for extra juiciness. Then, before serving, I pop in under the broiler to crisp up the skin. Highly recommend.
I just watched a video from "Celebrating Appalachia " with Tipper Pressley, where she foraged in her yard for lunch for her and her daughter. Amazing what we can find if we just know what to look for.
My daughter & I went to the woods to find ramps this past weekend. I found a bonus, patches of creasy greens. Going to add some dandelion greens to them.
The look Jackson gave you when you said “my man children” he’s a sweet teenager! My oldest is almost 12… it’s going to be so wild having man children! But I am all about it. Seems like such a fun stage.
Slow roasted goose is so good and easy, it doesn't matter how old they are. The plucking is the hard part, you need to make sure that they are not molting or it's nearly impossible to properly pluck them. Same with ducks. And pan fried skin on goose or duck breast is sooo delicious.
I never thought in a million years that I would be raising ( Peking) ducks. It happened a few years ago. Just before Easter. I had gotten a few baby chicks & these little yellow ducks would have to stay at the farm store all weekend all alone. I brought them home. Those ducklings grew into Peking ducks. I now have a male, named Cheddar & the female is Quackers. They are fun to watch . 😊
Back in the day we never fed our milk cows grain at milking time. We gave them silage and they had plenty of milk production. You might want to look into that as you could raise your own corn and produce your own silage. You would need a silo to store it so Miah would have to get to work on that!!!!!!
My husband and I have been doing mainly carnivore for about a year. We have lost around 90 lbs combined. But I miss veg! I have added in some here and there and I have found certain ones that I just need to avoid. It is very eye opening to find certain “healthy” things that just don’t agree with your body. So happy you are healing your body with carnivore. It is certainly a debated way of eating. ❤️
Hey Jess, a French chef I worked for would pour a small/medium mound of salt for each beet and sit the beet in it and roast them in the oven. Use something long and thin to test for doneness, when one let cool and with gloved hands, pull the skin off. They are wonderful cooked this way! (And it’s probably how they were cooked for that salad!)
If you possibly can, feed the sheep hay in the morning before turning them out onto pasture during early grass growth. This helps their rumens adjust to sugary, fresh grass during early spring. The roughage helps them digest and prevents bloat, scouring and other issues. I know you have a lot of livestock experience but with sheep finding a great mentor you can turn to is a must! Good luck with your lovely ewes.
Hola - can you provide updates on your dad/his move to the property (if that's still the plan), the start of Miah's Barn/workshop, and plans for your house? Between your health scare and the new businesses, it's easy to understand the timing wasn't right but was just curious about how things were evolving on those fronts...
I love Beetroot ❤ Very thinly sliced with vinegar and a little salt left overnight in the fridge is my favourite. And beets have benefits for the cardiovascular system 😊
Thanks for sharing all your thoughts about the fowl, sheep & cattle! They’re happy animals at your wonderful farm! Ben looks so handsome in his ball uniform. Blessings to all 🤗💜🇨🇦
I just love you, your family and your lovely journey. I’ve been growing and learning from you for many years. I pray that God will restore your health. Bless you for sharing your life with the world.
Sweet Jess.. Your "For the Love of Food" Podcast is incredible and moving, as is your two passionate books you have put your heart & soul into!! I've listened to your podcasts often and this one several times! Thanks for your caring & sharing of your homesteading & family's journey! Your honesty is valuable when you wear it on your sleeve! Love you and your family and how you have inspired me with my own passions! Blessings Always ❤️ 🙌 🌱🌷🦆🐮👩🌾🌻🙏
Dear Jess. This morning I preserved some winter squash from last years garden and listened to your podcast "what is a homesteader". The hole podcast was so emotional and when you said that I can be proud of me there come some tears and it touched my heart deeply. Last year was my first real garden year and even today I have some winter squash in our root cellar. I just realized that I managed to turn my waiting room into a classroom, as you always say so beautifully. Up until now my aunt has always given me vegetables from the garden. This time it's the first time that I bring her some winter squash. I am very happy that I can give her something in back. This is amazing and I have to thanks you so much for all this inspiration and motivation that you give to us. Also the podcast "for the love of food" touched my heart so much when I heard it last time while I separated my little seedlings for this years garden. It is so a blessing to have you. Apropos Miss "Fräulein" is so cute and she reminds me on the baby cows that my grandfather had back when I was little. I wish you and your family all the best and send you many love from Switzerland.
Love Coulter Wall and his music. 🎵🎵 Your farm/ homestead is growing all the time. Love your humor, sense of loving the earth, and the love of your family.
Goose eggs are great used in baking! Just weigh them so you know how many to use. A large chicken egg is, I believe, 2 ounces and a goose egg if I remember correctly, about 6-8 ounces. They make the best egg custard.
My great grandma lived to be 106 and lived during both ww!! She was very savvy!! Her best was old birds cured meats, sausage and deli meat!! She just mixed all the tough meat , ground it and made it very tasty to eat!! No waste!!!
Two things I would like to see you address in future videos: how is the compost doing? I would like to see updates on the breakdown; if you have used it; how additional efforts have gone. The second thing is fertilizing your garden. I add compost every fall/spring to my garden and some amendments but you speak about fertilizing and I need to SEE what you do and what different fertilizers you use. I use compost tea with molasses but I don't know if I should be fertilizing things like onions; peppers; carrots, etc. Thank you for all I've learned from you. I live vicariously through your livestock...former farm girl; now a city dweller.
I don’t remember you featuring the trees planted in the orchard? I don’t remember that. I would love to see an orchard tour. Are you using comfrey at the base of the trees? When are you planting the berries? Are you going to grow alfalfa for your cows and sheep?
That seriously cracked me up so much! So last year our Nubian it had four babies! When number three came along Matt insisted it was a boy. I just took his word for it! It wasn't for a week and a half later until I realize that it was indeed a girl which meant we had four girls! It was like hitting the jackpot!
I so wish I could have a garden again, but I wish for a lot of things to be the way I used to be able to have them...but I am going to have a couple of tomato plants this year ...I'm determined 😊 (because you are so right: store bought tomatoes taste like disappointment)😅❤
you might want to check out Takota Coens videos on supplementing the food for pigs, cows and chickens with duckweed. And also breeding for needing increasingly less grain 🙂
I'm a dairy farmer and we 100% only feed grass for our cows over late spring to early fall. The key is to not be over stocked and do rotational grazing. 2acres per head of cattle 16 - 18kg of Dry Matter per lactating cow per day, should keep her milk poduction in good flow
our 4 month old pilgrim gander caught a hawk by the neck. The hawk was sitting on one of our 4 month old chicks with its talons holding on. That gander squawked so loud and strangely that my daughter ran out to the run and disengaged the hawk from the chick. The chick was not injured, the gander let go of the hawk once my daughter had a hold of it. It was truly amazing.
Jess I just wanted to say thanks for all your inspiration for gardening I've learned so much from you girl I'm trying to talk my hubby in to getting some chickens to start my little homestead.
Master BEN,. I am cheering you on. Please SHARE about your team. I am praying for you and the whole team. I saw your cross necklace. AMAZING. You are a special person. GOD BLESS YOU and your family. CHOW FROM MICHIGAN GREAT LAKES STATE. Very cool baseball uniform.
After finding out that the USDA will certify a hydroponic operation as organic, I started growing my own food just so I know it's coming from clean organic soil with a real natural microbiome the way we evolved to eat it.
I noticed the goose egg out in between the nests. I’ve watched hens push eggs out of their nests. I always wondered why they did that. My Uncle use to sit and watch the chickens, sometimes I had time to go sit with him and he would tell me all about their different personalities and the pecking order. She took pride in her Sunday pot roast or pork roast stuffed with toes of garlic and sliced thin so everyone could have seconds. Always with her baked macaroni and mashed potatoes. Then a big poker game after, with the Saints game on tv. Memories…. 😌 Have fun Ben! I hope yall won!!! ⚾️
Jessica at Three Rivers Homestead has some videos on salt curing egg yolks. I really need to try it. I've seen some recipes for bread made from egg whites that I've been wanting to try as well. Complementary projects!
Jess, I got a beet of a surprise today. I was getting some feed for my flock this evening & noticed something green sticking out of a food scrap bowl that had a loose fitting lid. Tracy, I wholeheartedly agree too! ❤❤

I couldn't have said it better 💗
For those that don't know, you can eat the beet greens and stems. They are quite good.
They are delicious 🥰
Agree, I am thinning my golden beets and toss the micro greens into my salad.
I hope this makes you smile Jess, I've been cooking in kitchens for 12 years, and of those years that I've gotten to flex my creative muscles as a chef/sous chef, you and your channel have been a huge inspiration for me ❤
That blesses me big time!
This is what I need I am a nurse I had a rough day at work. Your videos bring me happiness.
Miah I saw right through that challenge. I knew you were getting your girl riled up to benefit you. 😂
I love "the challenge " My ex didn't give me any feed back on my cooking. None! The good, the bad, or the ugly! Miah has taste buds and he knows how to use em! Love your journey❤❤.

The “I don’t even like beets” and knowing you’ve been growing beets for YEARS was encouraging to me and I don’t even understand why. 😂
You have only been on your new property for a couple of years and it is so cool to see how relatively quickly you have developed it. Very impressive.
I just watched a video from "Celebrating Appalachia " with Tipper Pressley, where she foraged in her yard for lunch for her and her daughter. Amazing what we can find if we just know what to look for.
I love that family! Lol

That beet salad sounds delicious! If you figure out the recipe please share 😄😄
I would like a look at that recipe also.

Me too have been watching him grow up for years when he was so little and was gardening
Can’t wait for the beet roasting challenge.

I made pasta with my goose eggs 😁
It is so nice to just slow down and watch a vlog. Thank you!
Hi
You've come so far . I talked about you in my first video .
Hopefully when I relaunch I have more .
Stay well.
Happy for Miah . Sweet .
Ben is to adorable. Sweet ending to a sweet video ❤
My great grandma lived to be 106 and lived during both ww!!

Her best was old birds cured meats, sausage and deli meat!!
She just mixed all the tough meat , ground it and made it very tasty to eat!! No waste!!!
I have an IgG food allergy to egg yolk right now. I can’t eat chicken eggs but I can eat duck eggs😊😊 Thank the Lord for duck eggs ❤
Gauntlet thrown down Jess!!
Boiled beet, potato and carrot salad with Mayo potato salad drsg is really good or beet potato chips. Yum! 😊
Yes! This is how my grandmom makes her potato salads it soo soo good!

You are my inspiration to garden xx
I love that little boy! I love your whole family!❤
Thanks for another great video Jess

I went on a field trip today too, and then to soccer practice. So ready for bed now. 😂

Thank you❤

I love it when you have a date with your beets. they are delicious!
Thank you for salt cured egg yolks tutorials..... that is a new one to me. Lol.
Thank you for showing and talking about the sheep! I’m very interested in how they are going to fit into your farm. So excited 🤍🤍🤍
Girl!!! Thanks for spreading the joybombs:)
We haven't seen your horses in awhile! Would love see them and get an update!
you might want to check out Takota Coens videos on supplementing the food for pigs, cows and chickens with duckweed. And also breeding for needing increasingly less grain 🙂
Thanks for all the feels in this video! Lol! The beet challenge is on! 🤗❤️😁
This is the first video I have watched that , although briefly, Jeremiah had his hair down . Looks good.

I'm watching your video we go to the Zoo with my fiance's daughter this morning!
Good evening Jess keep up the great videos you have them so real i really enjoy you talking about your gardens
..and, brava, dear Jess!
After finding out that the USDA will certify a hydroponic operation as organic, I started growing my own food just so I know it's coming from clean organic soil with a real natural microbiome the way we evolved to eat it.
My mouth is watering. My strawberries are still dormant and yours are ready to harvest!
For the love of food was my favorite podcast too.
Your vlogs made my spirit smile.
sounds really good kale with beets mixed In I well have to try that
You've got this, Jess! I bet your roasted beets will be just as good as the ones you had in the restaurant, if not better!😊
Bless you😊 good luck on your ball game🥰
Jess, I really love you and your sweet family. You always make me smile. ❤❤
I noticed the goose egg out in between the nests. I’ve watched hens push eggs out of their nests. I always wondered why they did that. My Uncle use to sit and watch the chickens, sometimes I had time to go sit with him and he would tell me all about their different personalities and the pecking order. We all lived in one big yard on 6 acres. Two houses and sometimes 4 mobile homes. Sunday dinner was the best up at Mom’s house. ⚾️
It's always fun to hang out with Jess, Miah and the family.
You could use a pecorino Romano or a finely grated park on top of the salad to replace the salt cured eggs!
Ben is such a joy to behold! The best attitude ever and I'm sure he will be a lifetime gardener. Miah sure knows what buttons to push, right?
It is so cute to see how shy he seems in his baseball uniform, while usually so chatty and sure of himself in his gardening clothes.
Jessica at Three Rivers Homestead has some videos on salt curing egg yolks. I really need to try it. I've seen some recipes for bread made from egg whites that I've been wanting to try as well. Complementary projects!
I’ve made them many times back when I was dairy free for nursing babies, it’s a great cheese alternative
Jess, I got a beet of a surprise today. I was getting some feed for my flock this evening & noticed something green sticking out of a food scrap bowl that had a loose fitting lid. It was a red beet that had sprouted many leaves! So guess what, I planted it in a container. This was hours before I saw your video . Can't wait till your beets are a grillin' . 😊
So cute she’s learning to cow.
Bless yall !❤
people sometimes say to me they can do something... like bake a favorite meal really well... I say, "PROVE IT!!!" with a REALLY big grin on my face and hopeful eyes!
I enjoy your visits. You are an amazing person. Been following you quite awhile
Lovely afternoon surprise
Absolutely love all your videos ❤️❤️❤️
So jealous of your garden ours is still under snow lol. Food security is one we are looking to really dive into. We got our 25acres right around the same time you did and we currently have chickens and some pet goats. We hope to add pigs this year and then add in Sheep, a dairy cow, and beef cows down the road. It's so important to get as much as your own food as close to your home as possible we have a few friends with sheep and cattle so we may end up exchanging for pork down the road as well, many options once you start looking at bartering
I bless you until next time.
❤those magnificent strawberries
Yes show me how to salt cure egg yolks please!!! I'm trying to pass my time until I see the ground again and that would be a great learning opportunity!
