7. SOUNDBITE (English) Carolina Rangel de Lima, curator:
"Legion: life in the Roman Army is an exhibition about the Roman army, but it's told from the perspective of ordinary Roman soldiers. So stepping away from the kind of big man history that we often get with Roman archaeology - about emperors and great battles - and really focusing in on the personal stories of the soldiers who served in the army."
8. Tilt down to display case
9. Close of medallion showing Emperor Commodus standing by a lighthouse to welcome grain fleets, AD 191
10. Close of coin which shows Rome’s Colosseum, AD 223
11. Tilt up of marble bust of Emperor Commodus, about AD 185-90
12. Various of ornate short sword, AD 14-19
13. Pan from panels of goatskin leather used to make tents that soldiers lived in, AD 100-200
14. Close of wooden tent pegs, AD 85-410
15. Various of dice tower used by soldiers in board games. It is designed to prevent players cheating by manipulating their dice throw, AD 300-400
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Carolina Rangel de Lima, curator:
"It's a different take on the subject that a lot of people have heard of before, and it sheds light on an area that actually not many people are that familiar with. But also, I think to me, that's one of the things that's most special about Roman archaeology, is the amount of objects that we've got. There's such an abundance of material that we can really engage with different types of stories. So the exhibition brings together some of the most famous Roman military objects in the world, - the only complete Roman scutum and the most complete Roman cuirass, that's a type of body armour - to kind of really mundane, you know, leather tents that soldiers used and tent pegs that they used and board games that they played in forts."
17. Various of the most complete Roman legionary’s articulated cuirass (body armour) in the world, discovered in Germany and only recently restored. It will go on permanent display at a German museum so this is likely to be the only time it will ever be seen outside the country, AD 9
18. Various of the only complete surviving Roman legionary long shield, known as a scutum, in the world. It is from Rome’s Syrian frontier and is decorated in Roman victory and regimental motifs including a laurel wreath, winged Victories and a lion
19. SOUNDBITE (English) Carolina Rangel de Lima, curator:
20. Wide of exhibition
21. Various of carved tombstone depicting mounted archer, AD 70-100

23. Pull focus from crocodile leather armour, AD 200-400, to iron cavalry helmet, AD 1-100

25. SOUNDBITE (English) Tabish Khan, art critic:

Living in North America is rough when it comes to seeing History like this. I’ve been to the Royal Ontario Museum which has a small exhibit on Rome. There are some amazing minted coins and some original busts of Tiberius and Lucius Verus. But nothing comes close to any of the actual artifacts that can be pulled from Europe. That armor is stunning
Better hygiene than some countries now. I've seen a good sewer made by hadrian with water still running in athens. You can see it in the train station monastiraki
The statue head…..he’s seen something’s, he has.
