I love it. The cue is "Urban Saxman," for anyone going nuts scrolling back and forth from the music credits at the end: ruclips.net/video/J5nhX7cyvFs/видео.html
And it gets even worse than that. During that 1976 season with Peppler in charge, the Falcons played the Seahawks, a team that was 1-7, with the lone win coming against the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seahawks hadn't scored more than 24 points in any game that season. They scored 30 through three quarters and won in a blowout, with the game being so bad that Tommy Nobis briefly quit the team
I think no better game exemplifies how bad the 77 Falcons defense had it than their 3-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The defense played lights out, and yet, still lost to a Buffalo team that had dropped 14 straight games. And that's because the Falcons offense did the following: - Went 9-for-20 through the air - Averaged just 2.9 yards per carry - Had starting quarterback Scott Hunter finish with a passer rating of 12.9 - Went for it on 4th and 1 with three minutes left and didn't get it because nobody could pick up their blocking assignment The Gritz Blitz deserved so much better
That ‘77 Falcons defense is possibly the greatest in NFL history, but it's largely forgotten because of the horrible offense that year and that they didn’t even make the playoffs. The performance of that defense was wasted so many times throughout that season!
"Although he went undrafted out of Nazareth, Jesus Christ has been credited as the driving force behind many Super Bowl victories." 😂 Never change, Jon
Not religious but when Greg Brezina went to Michel to comfort him after the missed kick I broke down and cried. Forever will love this series and dorktown.
Never in my life, even as a student at a Christian college, did I ever think I would hear “Jesus Christ may have went undrafted out of Nazareth” this series and this channel are awesome
Bart had a great arm, but because of his injuries, he was not very mobile. Which, of course, means he was always in danger of being sacked. Even though Ryan is today not what he used to be, he is still able to get out of trouble with his feet. Bart really never had that ability.
@@davidcarlton7191 Ryan’s otherwise HoF-worthy legacy is forever marred by owning those two dang records. Fans will forever remember him for that, but if the it keeps him outta Canton that will be a shame.
“As offensive linemen who never scored a touchdown, these two have no highlight reels. Just like how you never tell a bridge good job when you go across it.” I always dig your similes and metaphors Mr. Bois. Thank you for your hard work and determination.
As a Falcons fan who started watching them in 1973 when my Dad had season tickets, this series has so far been wonderful and nostalgic, as well as sad at times, thinking what could have been. I just wanted to add a few notes of things I didn't see mentioned. This is not a criticism, I know if you included every tidbit, it would be 4 hours long! But I do think when discussing the 1980 season, while Bart's rocket arm was the biggest part, I'm surprised you did not mention the ground team of William Andrews and Lynn Cain. Andrews especially, was a beast. Before his career-ending injury, he simply could not be brought down. I remember in particular the Redskins game where he dragged four tacklers about 15 yards before they could get him down. It was said that trying to tackle him was like tackling a bowling ball, all you got was helmet, knees and elbows. He did not have blazing speed, but if he got into the open with a head of steam, he was almost unstoppable. There were a lot of tough yards on the ground that set Bart up for his bombing attacks. I remember how many times Andrews would get them a tough first down at mid field, and you just KNEW the next play was a bomb to Jenkins or Francis. When he was healthy and had protection (he was no scrambler) he was basically Dan Marino before Marino. Nobody could throw it farther with greater accuracy than him. Also, regarding the 1978 last second tip-ball play at NO, one thing you didn't mention, was that during the game everyone assumed it was a Hail Mary, and what happened was a fluke. But after the game, Bartkowski claimed it was a designed play called Big-Ben that they actually practiced, and they used it more than once. Nowadays, that's pretty standard, a tip-drill play is in every teams playbook. But this may be the first instance of it being a planned play, rather than just a desperation fluke. Lastly, regarding the 1977 defense, and the drop-off in 1978, while Coryell's "figuring it out" may have played a role, I would add something else, more fundamental. The defensive rule changes. Prior to 1978, defenders could hit and maul receivers almost with impunity. This was what made the Falcons' corners so effective in 1977, Rolland Lawrence was a very physical player. This is why they could risk the all-out blitzes, because the receivers rarely got into the open. However, once the rules changed and you had to keep hands-off the receivers most the time, Lawrence simply did not have the speed to stay with the receivers. He was a physical tormentor, not a speedster. So once freed by the rules changes, the receivers ran all over the Falcons secondary, and scored big when they blitzed. However, even into 1980 they still blitzed A LOT. They got burned a lot, but they also got a lot of sacks and knocked out a lot of QBs (like Staubach in 1978, who was never the same after that game.) And you still could not run against them. Very few RBs ever got near 100 yards against them. They were also very opportunistic and picked off a lot of interceptions. So I think it's unfair to say that they became bad in 1978, they just became a different kind of threat than in 1977. Again, not criticizing, I know you can't cover EVERYTHING! Really enjoying this.
@Fries Honestly I couldn’t tell you! 😄 Never been much of a football person really. It's interesting, usually my favorite moments in these mega-documentaries come from the huge, massive moments. This one has always been an exception; not for a lack of wonderful big moments mind you, but the sheer emotional weight of 23:55 gets me coming back to this part again and again. It says a lot about Brezina, doing a purely selfless act like this, tending to someone he likely barely knows like a brother, something that, if not for the camera crews having caught it by sheer chance, likely would have never been noticed at all. All in a crowd of people who are celebrating, and likely haven't even considered how the poor man is feeling. That's true altruism. That's what the values Christianity touts truly means. It gives me hope for humanity, and it makes me tear up still many watches later. Thank you.

I’m hoping for a miniseries on the recent history of my Pirates. They’ve generally sucked for longer than I’ve been alive.
@Fries Oh yeah, I’ve heard about that game. Down 6 runs in the 9th and coming back to win 9-8 on a Brian Giles grand slam. I was only a few months old at the time, so I obviously wouldn’t remember it lol, but I know of it.
Jesus Christ went undrafted out of Nazareth. Goddamnit you did it again
Jon and Alex (and Kofie, and everyone else involved) please keep doing your thing. It is entirely unique and brilliant. I can’t get enough of this content
@Fries I'd just stop at anyone
Jon really knows how to introduce star players. I don't even know who Deion Sanders is but I got full body goosebumps.
How do you not know PrimeTime?
@@Eidenhoek i know it seems odd to anyone who knows anything about football but jon and alex have a huge following of viewers who literally don't know sports, don't follow sports, weren't exposed to them. It's an incredible thing. You'll see many comments under their productions from people saying just that but they watch these things over and over.
@@Eidenhoek My family was ride or die Steelers fans so I don't know much about other teams at all. Now that I've grown out of my cringe phase I'm just starting to learn about other teams.
@@Technochaos03 He's considered one of, if not THE, best cornerbacks ever.
PRIME TIME
I hope you watched the next episode!
crazy that jesus went undrafted after hearing how much he influences some of the all time greats
@@SimuLord he also had serious anger issues. I mean Ryan Leaf shouting a reporter is one thing, but this Jesus guy supposedly walked into a temple and totally flipped out. Not a good image.
@@SimuLord Also tax collectors and ordinary fishermen. He was also potentially responsible for getting people drunk at a wedding by turning the water into wine. One too many character concerns are what hurt his draft stock, I mean, have you ever seen him on Mel Kiper's draft board? 😂
@@SimuLord Don't forget, he was a /really/ wacky character. Not that football hasn't had nore than it's fair share of wacky characters. But when you start claiming you're the savior of mankind and the son of God ... yeah, the only list you're getting put on is a government watchlist.
I can’t believe that some simple music at 16:03 turned bars moving across the screen into a heart pumping battle of the ages
Great work so far on this series. Yall are already getting to the heart of what makes it so tough to be a Falcons fan, hell to be an Atlanta sports fan in general. They can't just lose normally, they can't just be bad, they have to give you hope first before dashing said hope spectacularly.
The Mariners sail a boat through choppy waters, the Falcons drive a train that has one stop: Pain.
Even though i was born in the 2000s, i will never forget the years 1995 or 1958
@Fries Hawks won the nba championship (even though they weren’t in atl yet, its still a w)
At least you got the Braves 😂🤷🏾♂️ who usually kick my Mets azz up and down the block 😂🤷🏾♂️
@@AQUAPHREESH193 They haven't done anything either in the last 25 years
The music at 16:02 reminds me of late 80s/early 90s NFL Films productions. Awesome.
LETS GOOO ive been waiting on this and I’m not even a falcons fan. Anything with multiple parts from Jon is like waiting for christmas
I had a tear in my eye at the 24 minute mark. Thank you for sharing this part of the story.
The falcons are a team I’ve never really cared about yet here I am extremely invested into this series and the entire history of the team. Cant wait for part 3
As a saints fan I can't believe you had me rooting for the falcons there for a second lmao
I felt similarly as a Panthers fan honestly
Now you know how it feels to be a Falcons' fan.
Watching you recap the second half of that 1978 Falcon wild card game, I feel like your planting a seed for future reference to SB LI. The Eagles on the verge of clinching until a turnover. A 3rd and long leading to a fingertip Falcon catch. 19:50
I'm getting flash forward images of Matt Ryan and Julian Edelman.
The anime fight music for the Falcons first playoff game was awesome.
Lol it’s anime music? 😂😂
Sounded more like a Monday Night Football theme ripoff.

“Although he went undrafted out of Nazereth…”
“Relying on a punter to make an emergency pass is like handing a paintbrush to an elephant: it’s just interesting to see what they will create.”
This is why Jon is the best sports writer, period.
It's insane how well the music fits at 16:02; I've been listening to this track non-stop since watching this video
Wow! I wasn’t expecting this episode for another 2 weeks! What a pleasant surprise.
The episodes are weekly, FYI
@@serraramayfield9230 The Cleveland Cavs videos came out two weeks a part. They had a random video that would come out between each part.
@@heyitsevan758 If you looked at the pinned comment on the first part of the ATL series, it said to come back Saturday for part 2
That Pearson “catch” against the Vikings is so clearly out of bounds - poor vikes can’t catch a break!
They might've ruled he was forced out, which refs were allowed to do until like 2007
At that time, if the defender pushed the receiver out, the refs called it a catch. Only recently did the NFL change that rule
Don't forget the push off on the defender for the hailmary catch
@@michaelsvoboda8380 Watched an NFL films highlight reel when I was 6. I excitedly showed my dad the catch when he came home, to which he only commented that was the point that he realized the NFL is rigged.
Coming back to watch this after already having seen it multiple times. All I can say is a sincere thankyou to Jon, Alex and all of Secret Base for being the single best story tellers on RUclips. You guys have given me countless hours of enjoyment. You’re amazing.
Loved 16:02 to 21:30. I wish I could watch more recaps of ANY game like that.
That song at 9:43 whenever the Saints are mentioned gets me every time. Very classy way to describe the Falcons/Saints rivalry.
That track during the Eagles game was absolutely banging
If this is going to be a 6 hour documentary on one of the most okay teams in any sport, I'm all in.
As a former O lineman thank you for the fantastic bridge metaphor!
the added pomp and excitement added to the playoff game(s?) is AWESOME
Everyone talking about the jesus joke but that PHI - ATL playoff music was FIRE
I come back periodically for those goosebumps after the ending
Man I love seeing and hearing about those beautiful little sports moments you guys highlight in the middle of these traumatic histories.
Thank you.
The 80s background music is the best part of the video
The music in the Eagles-Falcons playoff game is an absolute banger. The instrumentals are stellar every time they pop up.
Here re-watching after the 22-21 upset vs the Eagles on MNF.
I wish I knew what music SB uses for these, I feel the music is the unstated hero of a lot of these vids, holding it all together and making it perfect.
Jon Bois actually has a playlist on Spotify of the music he used for the Mariners videos, fingers crossed he'll make one for this one too!
I can’t tell if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that I know the best part of my day will be when these videos come out
I come back to this series around once a month… It’s so fire
Jon is using his opening monologue to attack everyone who has ever attempted building the IKEA MALM chest of drawers.
the best sports series on RUclips hands down no question.
Can't wait to watch the eight hour long supercut of this series several times
The music getting a little more New Jack Swing for that Deion intro at the end is a prime example of the little but thoughtful details that make me love these series y’all put together so damn much.
This has already been said, but the "undrafted out of Nazareth" line may be the best Bois line yet, and that is saying a lot.
The shoutout to Acworth Georgia really made my day. Thanks Jon
I know they’re going to stop at Super Bowl 51, but I still want them to talk about the 2020 season
they didn't stop at 2001 on the mariners
@@brucedillon8358 yeah but between the trailer and the start of part 1, they are very clearly going to have Super Bowl 51 as the climax. I hope they still continue onto the 2020 season
@@TheSpartanWin It's only been 4 years since then, they can do a kind of unwinding after the fact. Half of the last part of the Mariners doc was "wrapping up on accolades" after all.
@@TheSpartanWin A climax is not the end of a story. I think it would be a disservice to the Falcons not to talk about life after SB 51. Dorktown wouldn't do us like that
@@keenfrizzle exactly
You guys are seriously some of the best sports journalist and your presentations and research are unrivaled by most channels, youtube or otherwise. I am always happy to see my phone beep with your channel sending a push notification saying you dropped another one. You guys deserve all the views and I only hope more people find this channel.
Dude does have a cannon even without amazing footwork. Dude would have top 5 arm talent in the nfl today.
That commentary of the playoff game against the eagles is something of pure bliss
I realize now that I actually love that old school all-red Falcons uniform that Riggs was rocking.
Such an amazing video. Unfortunately so much tragic foreshadowing
Love that this ended just like Mariners pt 1
I wish I had an endless list of these "history of" videos. The sports/charts/history combo genre is really taking off.
From now on I will always thank a bridge after driving over it, to make it feel more appreciated for doing its job really well.
As someone who does not know anything about football people, the amount of suspense you have put in me for the next episode by using the same song for this guy as you did for introducing Ichiro Suzuki in the Mariners series is incredible
Well sanders is the only player to play in a super bowl and a world series
This is such a masterful job. This is so informative and entertaining I can’t get enough. I’m a Steelers fan, but Atlanta has been my ‘NFC team’ forever, they’ve just always interested me. I think I liked their colors as a kid, plus everyone wanted Denver which made me want them.
From a falcons fan since the late 90s , thank you for this series.
ok the part about the eagles using a punter as a kicker even after he sucked for 4 weeks has me rolling lmao
Jeff Van Note actually lives in my neighborhood in a suburb north of Atlanta. Super nice and chill dude, might not have ever heard of him if my parents weren't Falcons season ticket holders in the 80's.
Did not expect Secret Base to convince me God exists today but here we are
The score of the videos make it so much better, and they’re all incredible as it is
