Wierd Instrument Project: Keyless Drawer Hurdy Gurdy [1]

- I made this hurdy gurdy out of a drawer from a dresser that Kris's mother was throwing away. Of course a few parts were not made out of the drawer.
I'm back to using an older "update" format in this video that I used in the last hurdy gurdy build, so no shop footage unfortunately. However you are free to ask questions about anything that I might have missed in the video. More updates to come.

I have seen these fretless sections added on to some of the Larger higher $$$ Hurdy Gurdy's usually separate and below the Tangent keys section. I like the Simplicity of it.
what if you had frets at the proper key points on the top of the box/sound board, and lower the strings down to just above the frets like a guitar, it seems Like the volume would be Louder as in a hurdy gurdy the tangent and keys are all in contact or part of the top sound board for resonation into the sound box. with the frets for each string in different locations like the Tangents for each string Like a push button Hurdy Gurdy, for playing Multiple notes at the same time like a push button Hurdy gurdy. would the sound be too clean and guitar Like? you would still be using a rosin coated wheel

Nice job! The only suggestion I might have would be to use the flats (or tops) of your nails directly on the string (like a Gadulka fiddle). You'll get a much louder tone off the string, and a more precise intonation, although it might take a bit of getting used to, as the technique is almost opposite in that you push forward against the string with your finger nail instead of pressing down with the tip. Of course, if you happen to have super-hard left hand calluses, (like from playing fiddle or guitar) then pressing down should work fine. Cheers!
Did you use guitar strings? im looking into making a hurdy gurdy for myself for a school project
I used cheap violin strings. On my large one I used cello strings. Never use guitar strings as the windings can mess things up

@@meercreate heavy medium or light tension? Or does it not matter? I have happened upon some nice pear and walnut and would like to try my hand at trying to make a pear shaped gurdy. I have some experience with woodworking but almost none with instrument making so I apologize if this is a silly question.
@@harmonic5107 Mine are somewhat lighter in tension, but heavy gauge, due to the scale length

Are you using tuning peg soap on those friction pegs? It comes in small wax-like sticks, is really cheap and discovering it changed a lot for my restoration and building projects. It gives you more friction while enabling you to move the peg more accurately!
This project gives me some ideas, the sound of this fretless hurdy gurdy reminds me a lot of a cigar box guitar played with a slide. I actually shied away from trying to build something with a wheel because of the rest of the technology I saw as necessary, but maybe I should just go for it, maybe adding a little bit of neck or something and making a hurdy-guitar thing!
I’m just thinking that the bridge needs to be located on a freer-vibrating part of the sound-table. It’s a volume thing…
This is so cool! I'm planning on building something similar, can you tell me what type of material you used for the wheel and what type of strings those are?

Very interesting. I’m wondering if you have tried it with an actual slide or bottleneck? Also, on some fretless bowed instruments (maybe Cretan Lyra and or Chinese erhu-I’m not sure), the player stops the strings with the top of the fingernail, sort of like an organic bottleneck. I wonder how that would sound?
I also see the latter technique on Morin Khuur (horse fiddle)
May I make one similar or a replica of that?

Hi, nice job. Can the position of the wheel affect the pitch of the string??
Sometimes, but it definitely affects the tone more. Closer to the bridge is shriller, and to the center is mellow but airy
