Nausicaa is an interesting departure from the normal rules of protagonists... she doesn't really have a character arc; she starts the film pretty much as she ends it, already knowing the secret of the toxic forest, already possessing her almost supernatural abilities, and ultimately a figure of prophecy. It's hard to make such a "chosen one" character likeable (as the new Lucasfilm discovered with Rey), and yet Miyazaki pulls this off easily. And I think part of this is because the story is not really about Nausicaa; it's about the world around her. Because Nausicaa's world is so different to ours, in exploring it, Nausicaa has to play the role of a sort Gulliver in his travels. Nausicaa is a paragon, almost a messianic figure, and the character arc is not hers, but rather those of the characters around her, as they realize that the example she sets is the one to follow, rather than continuing the cycle of violence and ultimate destruction.

If you read the comics too, which further on the original movie's premise and story, it genuinely opens up an insane amount of detail in this world. One part that sticks out to me from reading it was a scene in which a Tolmekian soldier inhales poisonous gas/spores from the Jungle and immediately begins hemorrhaging from his lungs, Nausicaa wastes no time in quite literally sucking out the blood from his throat and trachea to breath and save his life, regardless of the secondhand risk she could take from the toxins. It's both intense and yet a gentle moment.

Humans inherently fear the unknown not because we're selfish and ignorant but because we are the product of the world around us. The optimistic, trusting, and content ape never became our ancestors because the cynical, paranoid, and fearful ape avoided becoming lunch.
That's not to say that I don't admire tolerance and understanding. On the contrary, the ability to look past our instincts and reach a deeper understanding of the world around us is one of humanity's greatest gifts.
Yet neither can I condemn those who do fear the unknown; an instinct honed over millions of years isn't something to dismiss lightly. Rather, you should acknowledge and respect that part of yourself before you can move past it (ironically in much the same way you would acknowledge and respect the unknown).

This is a very "survival of the fittest" narrative that forgets that the foundation of human development is community and bonding, including with animals. The reason we have been able to domesticate so many is because of bonds established with them, even on their own accord like with cats. The history of humam behaviour doesn't end at fear, and fear hasn't always and been successful in keeping us from being lunch. Indigenous peoples around the world figured out how to live alongside the scary creatures, it is an entirely modern and western notion that we developed from fear. We didn't. Fear is natural, but its not foundational to humanity, at least not by itself

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.
The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

Nausicaa was way ahead of it's time for a movie from 1984, and doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Many people credit Aladdin , Pocahontas, Anastasia, or Mulan for having the 1st brave and fearless female protaganist, but that honor really goes to Nausicaa.
Nausicaa wasn't treated like a stereotypical damsel in distress, or just a romantic reward for a male lead. In my opinion, Nausicaa is the greatest female protagonist. She is a kind and compassionate person who hates having to fight, and just wants people to stop killing, along with protecting her people, and the creatures of the jungle. She sees value in creatures that others falsely judge as pests or dangers.
The movie wasn't preachy either. It didn't have characters thinking low of her, because she's a girl or something, like in movies like Mulan, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, or Birds of Prey. It didn't have to try making the men look weak, to make the heroine look better by comparison. It was empowering purely through show.
Nausicaa wasn't a perfect character either, even she has flaws. When her bed ridden father was killed by an invading kingdom, she snaps and attacks the men responsible. 2 scenes later, we see her terrified of herself for having the urge to kill, when all she really wants is for the killing to stop.
This movie really deserves more love and recognition, not to mention how great the animation, music, and English voice cast was.

This is a nice insight of the movie. But i think what astounds me more is the manga version. Although being very different than the movie, it brings up much more interesting topic. Like why biodiversity is probably better for our long term survival, how nature can’t truly be pure/good, technological advancement is almost linear to environment destruction and many more. The sci-fi elements in the manga are also more prominent than in the movie.
The manga being made in 1982-1994, surprises me with the topics that can stay relevant to our current life. For example (spoiler) : The all consuming mold chapter is similar to our recent superbugs problem. When an organism have achieved extreme resilience to the environment, it needs to be balanced with other organisms, or else both the organism and the environment will suffer in the long run. We solved superbugs by using microbiotes transplant from another healthy donor. Overtime the superbugs number will decrease by the competition and either die or become another part of the recipient’s microbiome. Exactly like the case of the giant mold.
(Spoiler) But the best part in my opinion is at the end of the manga. Humans often view nature as environment that suit us, or something that are dangerous for our livelihood. Hence why we need to reshape it to our will or preserve it at all cost. But in the end nausicaa views nature as natural laws of the universe. Purity and corruption is nature. What transpires throughout history is inherently caused by mere molecular (atoms, quarks, etc.) reactions, and we are no master to them. And as nihilistic it all may be, energy equilibrium will catch us all.
So, keep on doing what you are doing. Be fearful if you want to, courageous if you need to. And most of all, enjoy your umwelt.. :)

Great vid! Nausicaa is probably the perfect animation in terms of accessibility as an intro to the philosophical "other". Nausicaa warns about the danger of "othering" rather ingeniously by making "the other" the insects. Can you imagine a creature more unlike us? But that's the point, these beings are different, and yet necessary and not on our terms but theirs. And the movie revealing that to the audience in a genuine way makes all the difference. Because we, the viewers, just like the rest of the cast don't know the Ohmu are needed in the beginning.
Additionally something that can be interesting to ponder as an aside is how the Ohm are always presented with this eastern "gong" (ik that's not exactly it) sound if you will. "Om" is also the sacred sound from Hinduism. From a western frame of reference this "othering" takes on new dimensions. Feel free to look up "the other" in philosophy to see what I mean.
Oh and on top of all this let's not forget Nausicaa is a respected (non-sexualized) female warrior scientist princess. It's befitting that an animation made in 1984 with a protagonist as different as her compared with her contemporaries is about "the other". It's amazing, always will be.

This video is great. It explains so deeply every reason why Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite Studio Ghibli movie of all. She is the epitome of love and caring. Also, not to sound like a weird astrology prophet or anything, but as a Cancer, I oddly just realized why I may have more in common with Nausicaa than I realized before. Supposedly, Cancers can be very lovingly protective and caring. From your description section and the way you explained her attributes in the movie, I realized that I just innately related to her as a character. Her caring and understanding is what drew me to her more than any other Ghibli character has. Also, this is Japan's favorite Ghibli character, so I side with the people over all lol. She is truly a strong female hero who, for her strength and love of people and nature, I have come to love so much as an animated older sister of sorts. She does share the same instinctual fear, but she has learned to use sympathy first above all.

After everything that has happened this past year and during the summer of last year, Nausicaa (among other inspirational figures to me) has been a solid example of the type of human I strive to be and meet in this world. Nausicaa had such a great impression on me as a child. I was always very curious but the move bolstered my love for nature and told me that it was ok to not be afraid of the unknown and protect those creatures that others would just smash on the sidewalk. I’ve love insects, fungi, animals and it weirds me out to see so much hate for our neighboring species. It makes me so sad. It goes without saying that Nausicaa is my favorite movie.

I remember when a "Zombie outbreak" was popular to fantasize about, and how a lot of people said they would survive.
But after seeing how people are too weak to even put on a mask when they leave their homes, or just not crowd together for activities that they probably have done over and over again to the point it's just boring and stale.
And it's embarrassing to see, it shouldn't take someone personally getting it or their loved ones to recognize that this is serious, and that you aren't invincible or protected by whatever you think you are.

An elegantly crafted video essay, Kamimashita. This was a pleasure to watch. I have an amazing professor who told me that their favorite Studio Ghibli (or slightly pre-Studio Ghibli, haha) film was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which I had never heard of before. The films in general, are not my cup of tea, but I trust that they have good taste and thought I'd check it out. After watching just one trailer and your video, I am convinced I need to see the whole film. Nausicaa and I have a lot in common, namely our appreciation, curiosity, and fascination with nature; I love the underlying conservation themes of the film and never expected I was going to be able to relate to it and its protagonist in such a way. It seems a very profound film, certainly relevant, as you describe, to our current state and the ongoing crises facing the environment and us today.

I consider this film as one of my top 10 science fiction movies of all time, and wish adult film buffs wouldn't ignore it or dismiss it as just manga or a cartoon. Hey you out there, sit down and watch this with your kids. I was in my 20s and happened on "Warriors Of The Wind" by accident late one night on HBO (subscription cable, remember) and it blew me away. I had never seen anything like it before.
Girl boss? Here's one for you. One of the best women heroes , ever. I have a theory. Nausicca remains Princess rather than Queen because Lord Yupa and King Gil are brothers, and Yupa chose to remain a Ranger (which is what Aragon did before the war) rather than take the throne himself, to do Her work.
    An excellent review.

What I love about Nausicaa is that she doesn't have a character arc; at the end of the movie, she remains exactly the same way she was at the beginning. It's not her who changed, it's us and everyone around her. That image of her dressed in blue and walking on the golden Ohm tentacles as if it's a field still gets me.
On another unrelated note, Teto the fox-squirrel is freakin adorable.

Appreciated seeing your disclaimer about masks (I did a double take before checking the date haha!). The point is unfortunately still well taken about how selfish folks in certains parts of the world have been. Whether it is hoarding masks, hand sanitizer, vaccines, etc. and climate change is of course another story. Nevertheless, this movie was such a balm for all that! We can all be her, and we need to.

I think the best thing about this movie is that the antagonists are clearly motivated by self preservation rather than evil mustache twirling domination of the world. The people are right to fear the jungle, because it is toxic and kills them, but they are also WRONG because the jungle purifies the toxins of the world, their lack of understanding leading to continued reliance on a doomed attempt to fight back the jungle. Nausicaa's truest strength, in my view, is that she sets aside fear, seeks to understand the jungle, and through understanding, comes to realize greater truths about her own world. There are so many layers and meanings to this movie.

Nausicaa is the best female animated character. It's so difficult to portray kindness, gentleness and understanding as strengths in modern media. She's only strong against other humans when she's enraged, yet she's strong in kindness and gentleness when everyone is afraid except her.
Also, yes, She's the sexiest Ghibli character ever. There is no denying that. She also gives this air that no matter how much game you have, she probably would still be unattainable as a mate.
