Love how instead of making Ace a "bully" character, they actually made him a cool friend.
Yeah i thought he be rico enemy or bully instead ends up being one of his best bros and even wants him and diz to get together at the camp by playing romantic music with the fiddle around them.
Opposites attract, there are people you don't get along with, but when knee deep in shit they'll be there to cover your ass and you find out you have more in common than you think.
yes!!!! this
That's because they're all bullies. It's meant as a clue that we're rooting for bad people, and he's portrayed by Jake Busey, son of Gary Busey, people always associated with bully characters :)
I was always glad that Ace survived through the whole movie.
"Everyone should have a friend like me."
I love this line so much.
Turns out he was right, too!
Lies again? Nashville WWE88
A lot of characters got condensed or even eliminated from the book, which is sad. Namely Ace, who is only with rico after basic. The best example of his character might be his friend from basic Jenkins (who was both with him through klendathu and on to the roughnecks.) There's also the Roughnecks' platoon sergeant Jelal, a short Turkish man who was quite a stickler.
yes
Another good line of his was "Funny how they always want to be friends after they rip your guts out."
"Bronski, keep pace!"
Retracts club "MOVE! MOVE!" 😂 That part always killed me.
he was mission ready
"Brownski" lmao
Start running fast boy
MOVE!! MOVEE!!!!
I love how Sgt Zimm was in the background monitoring the entire situation, just ready to step in and regulate if need be...
Yes, Zim was the MVP!!! The Diego Maradona of the team all the time!!!
He was there to watch whos the natural leader of the platoon.
Two questions:
1. Was Zim the MVP? The Diego Maradona of the team of all time, if you will?
2. What was he there to watch for? Was it to find out the natural leader of the platoon?
@@NiceTryLaoChe Under the scope of my consideration...
1. Yes; even at the end when he went to the planet to keep fighting bugs
2. I don't think he was the type of man to trust in first impression, being himself in a job where the first impression is not the last. He might have been there to have a better picture of his trainees.
Just like real military training instructors. They're Always watching... ALWAYS.

Everyone should have a friend like ace in their squad
Looks exactly like one of my mates from secondary as well, he’s not ace to me. He’s private Turley.
since all the other memerable characters are either dead or in other units
It's very realistic tbh
Dicks only act like dicks when they think they can get away with it.
This is dark comedy done right. With a perfect 90s feel. It's not supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be over the top and fun and not take itself too seriously. I fucking love this movie.

I never felt like this was a comedy at all the only thing funny to me were the propaganda videos everything else was as dark and serious as it was supposed to be like the book.
@@Elitesolider1023 / Agreed, it sarcastically poked at fascism and the insanity of hyper-nationalism... it was funny too though, in a cringy sort of artificial utopian kinda way
@@Andrew_M_Ward pretty much just like robocop making fun of regan bullshit lol.
@@Elitesolider1023
Robocop started as an attempt to make a Judge Dredd movie but they didn't have the SFX or budget so they replaced the future and Megacity 1 with a very near future Detroit and turned Dredd into a cyborg as opposed to an unrelenting and unstoppable lawman. Starship Troopers was written from the ground up as a satire of US culture and it's slow march into happy clappy fascism which can be compared to Robocop's corporate kleptocracy. Fascism usually comes in through the establishment of a corporate kleptocracy as corporatism is the central plank of fascist economic theory as laid down by Mussolini in his fascist manifesto.

Props to Dina Meyer, she lands one good shot on Zim
Yeah, well, given their relative sizes and weights, he wouldn't even notice that hit in a real fight. You'd need a Clancy Brown-sized opponent to believably land a punch on Clancy Brown.
@@zroutube Well, keep in mind she was a trained athlete who could reasonably lift 50 to 60 pounds (unlike most women who lift 20 - 30 pounds (or my god.. less! had one 35 year old woman who had trouble lifting 15 pounds). She is also clearly trained in martial arts... so add that adds a bit more sting to the punch.
And she took being choked out with aplomb. It really sold the character. The fight was credible. I liked Dizzy even tho they genderbent the character.
she's the best character by far, she doesn't even believe in the federation bull-s**t, and the fight scene shows how smart and controlled she is. But she's madly in love with Rico and will follow him to the other side of the galaxy. Her death is the only event that leads Rico to actually question the Federation, but then Carl shows up to put him back in line.
If you watch well, Dizzy is the only character which expresses human emotions at the Buenos Aires destruction. She conveys it in just two words "it's home". Rico is just angry and wants to fight. We never get to see the reactions from Carmen or Carl, who also lost their parents there, and the rest of the world is only excited about a new war.
@@zroutube It's always possible for a trained fighter to knock someone out with a headshot regardless of size difference. They don't need enough power to break a jaw, just enough to jiggle the opponent's brain.
@@mickd9398 yes,but anyway heavyweight always have BIG neck muscles, which makes much more harder to "shake brains".mighty neck with specific muscle memory can to extinguish very serious blows, and the necessary acceleration of the skull simply does not occur. thus, some people are incredibly difficult to knock out, and if someone hit them 30-40 kg lighter is almost impossible.
That simple mechanic is ignored often by many people who thinks that just needed to hit accurate to right spot.
But it's not weak spot, it's spot of maximum leverage. That's all.

Dina Meyer is quite the looker. I love how Zim was lurking right there observing the line situation.
She was smoking hot and cute AF at the same time.
Hell, I remember watching Star Trek: Nemesis and thinking the Romulan commander was strangely hot....and then realized it was her lol.
All the times I’ve seen this movie and I’ve never noticed Zim watching and waiting to break it up if the confrontation went nasty.
Redheads, oh man.
Dina > Denise all day. Doesn't hurt that she got the shower scene. Verhoeven clearly agrees with us.
2:45 I dont remember this part. Look at the background you can see zim and the instructors. you can see them watching the lunch line discussing the recruits. You can tell they're talking about which ones got potential. I love how zim sees the possible fight about to break out but just goes closer to see how they resolve it. Entire time he just has this observant smirk. He sees the beginning of team building in his troop
well spotted
In real life, Drill Instructors look for the most motivated recruit.
Such attention to detail in moments like this is what made this movie great. Though the overall plot is iffy.
Also Kinda adds to the idea that the higher ups knew an attack, like it was planned by them, was incoming which itself could've been a diversion to strike fear in the earth so we WOULD go for the all out invasion.
@@Th0ughtf0rce how so?

This scene pretty much defines Verhoeven's humor and vision; underrated by Hollywood.
The interview before a screening where he explains how he made "the world's most expensive art film" is hilarious. The movie only got made at all because the studio changed heads three times and nobody at the top paid attention to what he was doing until it was too late to call it off.
@@squamish4244 makes sense! I bet it wqs initially greenlighted as just another sci-fi action movie.
Great, except it doesn't capture the book Heinlein wrote, it comes across more like a "Saved By The Bell" episode.

I like the fact that the Mobile Infantry have combat medics for basic training.

you see zim being a hardass
zim shows us that these guys can quit anytime, so there is no unfair suffering
zim breaks a dude's arm to show he's a good fighter
we see dizzy transfering in from another ready unit to this training camp just to get with rico
we see that zim tests her since people can't just join willy nilly (we already know zim's a good fighter so we don't know if dizzy would make it)
everything reinforces/reveals character and shows us how stuff works - while still being entertaining. That's good writing
Great analysis
uh, you're buying in a little much on the parody. Zim broke the guys arm bc he's been bred to be cruel and unforgiving. This is seen as strength by this warped society. Anyway, some of your other points are good but uh... watch where you step in a film/ literary sense....
@@patrickhamos2987 no actually its not cruelty entirely . Look at the way he comes at zim charging in 100%. Zim gave back what he received, although with some excessive force for sure.

Dammit now I want to see a complete reshoot with Jake Busey as Malfoy. No accent, no costume, just Jake Busey.
Except
1 - Malfoy is a bully, Ace is not
2 - Malfoy did not offer his friendship to Harry, he just told him he could "help him not making friends with the wrong sort".
01:10 Breckinridge timidly raises his right arm and says "Sir! I guess maybe I do, sir!"
Zim briskly breaks same arm. Genius. LMAO!
The director changed the same quite a bit from the book. In the book, Zim didn't break the arm intentionally. And he apologizes to the recruit afterwards for breaking the arm because the recruit rushed him before Zim was ready. And he felt it was his responsibility to always be ready.
This plays out later in the book when one of the characters acting as an officer is struck by a recruit.
Either them or Colonel to watch is very disappointed in the character because now they have to punish the recruit but they consider it the character's failure.
So this is what Mr. Krabs was like in the Navy.
Good to see Captain Hadley from Shawshank redemption is finally doing some good.
Man I loved Dizz and still do.
Yep, Johnny was an idiot. She was way hotter than Carmen. Probably better in the sack too.

And also an immortal swordsman.
I'd hate to see how badly he'd beat up a recruit after taking that hat off.
So this is what Mr. Krabs was doing back in his Navy days. A true hero.

Brony Bronski
I always loved how Bronski just drops whatever he's already on his way to do and starts keeping pace. I guess when Clancy Brown says "Jump" you say "How high?" on the way down.
Mr Krabs clearly lied when he said he was just a cook in the Navy.
I love that it parodies both Full Metal Jacket and Spartacus at the same time.
In the book, if memory serves, it was Shujumi who stood toe to toe with Zim, both with a mutual respect for eachothers skills. It is mentioned that Shujumi comes from a distinguished martial arts family with his father being a famous MI Colonel. It was Shujumis father who trained Zim in CQC, both, again if memory serves, fought to stalemate.
And here they made him the comedy clown, just good at showing off his butt and being the second in squad to get shredded on the first encounter with bugs. *sigh*
I thought it was a back and forth but Zim got the win. They just replaced Shijumi with Diz. Though Shijumi is now a guy who raged out and got torn a part on klendathu.
"Requesting a chance to avenge my arm sir!" would've been a nice line
Anything with Clancy Brown is an instant classic...we also got crazy azz Gary Bussey's son as a bonus playing our best friend Ace.
That choke out.., was Glorious!!!
He gives the dude a chance to stop laughing, he doesn't main Flores, and he doesn't reprimand the guy who cries out in pain. Kinda fair I guess
Prepares his troops for what's coming to them when they hit the field, while maintaining teamwork and cooperation. No enmity between anybody unless they choose it. I never cared for training tactics that encouraged rivalries or making yourself the bad guy just to unite the recruits. That's weak tyrant sauce.
He also observes but doesn't intervene when Ace and Rico looked like they were gonna fight and then gave a smirk when Ace just made a joke of it.
Considering what happened to the other two, he was pretty easy on the laughing guy
Despite the gruff drill sergeant talk, he clearly respects everyone there and treats them like adults
That's because Zim isn't a bully, he is a professional.
Bronski shouted so loud that my nose shaked a little.
“Bronski! Keep pace!” Love it. “Move! Move!”

There is that but Verderhoven is a bit obsessed with blood. He has made a lot of interesting films that irritated others in his native land so he eventually found it better to move elsewhere. I'm sure he'll be treasured after he is safely dead tho (is he now? I don't track him).
At least Diz landed a shot or two. First guy didn't have a clue.
Fighting Zim was a no-win scenario. Only a question of how long you last. It's no wonder they really started to win when he let himself get demoted to get on the field.

happy to see that some things are still handled the old school way in the future
Zim is exactly what a sergeant should be. As soon as he saw something happening in the line, he was right there, ready to nip anything in the bud, knowing he could kick everyone’s ass, but preferring to let the privates show who they are. And he clearly liked what he saw from Ace and Rico.
"Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?"
"You will not laugh, you will not cry! You will learn by the numbers, I will teach you!"
Drill Instructor's face at 0:58 is priceless :)
Sgt Zim is a pure definition of Psychological warfare
I love that they got Clancy Brown (Sgt. Zim) to play the exact character he was on "The Shawshank Redemption"
Zim and Hadley aren't the same. Zim does what he does to help the soldiers prepare for war, while Hadley is just a corrupt prison guard. They have verry little in common.
Far from it. They are entirely different characters, and I think it's a credit to Clancy Brown how he subtly puts across the differences.
Hadley is a bully. He likes inflicting pain and suffering to those who he has fully control over. I think you see a lot of his true self come out towards the end of the film, firstly after Andy has escaped and they are in the cell. You see the fear in him, the lack of control. The way he flinches when the warden is throwing rocks. He's dealing with someone who's smaller than him, weaker than him, but has so much power over him, and that terrifies him. Then also at the end when he's arrested. Again, he's afraid, he's powerless. The sort of men who he's spent his careers having almost unlimited power over are now fully controlling his life (since the police arresting him, the judges who will sentence him, the prison officers who will confine him are in most ways no different to the prisoners he's controlled).
Zim on the other hand is a "tough love" sort. He knows that he needs to turn these bunch that are below apes into a fighting force if they are to have any chance of surviving. He makes it clear he doesn't have full control over them. He tells them they can leave any time they want. You see a lot of his true self in two scenes. Firstly here, after he breaks the recruits arm. He asks "you ok son", and you can hear the care in his voice. He doesn't try and belittle him. The lesson is taught, to all of them. Then there is after the accident. For a start when they are discussing what happened, you can see how this is personal to him, yet he doesn't try and blame Rico, and backs him up. Then there is the whipping "bite down on his son, it helps, I know". Throughout the whole scene you can tell he's taking no pleasure in it. He doesn't want it to happen, he wishes it didn't need to happen, but it does. Another wonderful scene is when Rico decides not to drop out. Zim gives a little smile at this. Then when he rips up Ricos dropout form. "Is this your signature private?" "Doesn't look like it to me".
