Normally, people believe they have no control over chance. However, when they start gambling, some will change their beliefs and engage in magical thinking (lucky numbers, gambler’s fallacy, etc.). I’m wondering whether this is similar to OCD. Outside of OCD spikes, people know that compulsions won’t bring them closer to the certainty they’re seeking. However, during an OCD crisis, they start to believe that compulsions will eventually deliver them the results they are desperately wishing for. They are so sure of it that they won’t stop even if common sense is telling them to stop. What led them to change their beliefs?
