My personal interpretation of this game and there are many. But obviously we know the theme of this game is genetics and escaping pre-determinism. But I also kind of think Kojima has never made a game that is not about himself in a way. This game is essentially a series of boss fights. For a game where your expressed purpose is to avoid killing and use stealth. You do a lot of fighting. And everyone wants to fight you. Snake is adamant he is not a hero but a killer. And yet. He begins to defy is genes to save the allies he encounters.
My personal interpretation is that maybe Kojima was grappling with his own purpose as a games designer. What is the role of violence in video games? Why does he have to keep making metal gear games? Maybe he just wants to tell stories. Each metal gear game is like a boss fight. The thing he has to do. And a big part of him is drawn to the violence too. Yet, I think it was during this game where he began to dream of developing a video game where you don’t have to kill people. Something which would have been extremely novel for an action game in 1998. So I think it is interesting that the first game he developed with his freedom was… death stranding.
