    Re; the handles... Ontario says they deliver them unshaped because everyone has a different shaped hand, and in their experience people would rather shape their own. Same with the edge... they leave them beefy so there are lots of ways to shape for different uses. This is really a mod lovers machine... many very cool mods out there, and the final product will fit your need exactly.

      billder999 That makes sense. I just got one and had all the same complaints mentioned in this video. I'm going to shape the handle, remove the blade coating from the primary bevel, shape the edge better, and make a leather sheath for it. After all that I think it will be a great machete.

  • @Lars1540
    @Lars1540 7 лет назад +6

    I think the reason that Ontario left the handle a little on the blocky side was for indexing purposes. The more round the handle, the harder it is to index if you can't see well, and the more likely the machete is to want to twist in the hand.

    Thank you for the great video. I just made the purchase. I am 69 years old and I lost my military Machete in the 1973 return from SEA. I like these and want to use it around the house and in the woods. I think the steel type is important and how the metal is work hardened and then tempered. I am impressed with your demonstrations. My father had his machete from WWII landed at IWO JIMA he got wounded with a grenade and they kept on fighting for months, they just patched you up and kept going. Malaria got a lot of the men's really sick and trench foot from being in wet boots for over a week. The Bayonet was used allot when the ammo got low.

    Once I sharpened my Ontario Machete, I have cut down trees with it 8 inches in diameter no problem. This machete is like an axe!!! It holds its edge really well, is easy to sharpen, and cuts amazing. I put a convex grind on mine and it is truly magnificent.

    fun fact-The south American machete is only sharpened towards the tips to about halfway down, then there blunt so you choke up for finer tasks. also the blunt end is great for splitting wood after you've made your first cut.

    I love the Ontario machetes and though the 1095 is more brittle the a 107x series carbon steels they hold a good edge and work very well on green hardwoods here on the mainland. I really enjoy my 12" Ontarios that I've replaced the handles on. Thanks for another great video.

      I just finished to see a video of a guy chopping with two machetes: a cold steel and this ontario. This one after the same chopping on the same kind of wood broke off (or out, I don't know). The edge cracked and it was a 1095 too.After seeing that video I'm not really sure to buy this machete :(

    I've had mine for over a year. While i like it, but it was the most dull blade i ever felt - i was able to run my hands on the edge and nothing happened! The handle was the worst handle i gripped even with gloves i still felt the hot spots. It took me a hrs & hrs of work to get it in better shape.

    Excellent in depth review, thank you. I was looking at this Ontario brand machete to purchase on Amazon , but was unsure of the actual characteristics of the product as the pictures don't do it justice. The plastic handle concerned me in terms of quality, but it does appear now, to be tougher than I originally thought, after watching your video review. The unfortunate, ergonomically shaped uncomfortable handle, could be modified to suit the users preference, as you rightly suggested using a Drimel tool and some common sense, duly noted👍. I think you will, inadvertently, be promoting sales of this machete for The Ontario knife company, after the public views this video, they may owe you some commission money. 😀 Cheers!

    To note, Ontario still lists their 18 inch machete with the riveted handle as 1095 carbon steel. With Ontario, it's difficult to know. They changed all their 1095 products to 1075 a year or 2 ago. It's possible their riveted handle military version is still 1095. However, I've seen brutal testing with the newer riveted version, and I find it difficult to believe 1095 steel could be that tough and flexible. I suspect they're all 1075 now, which is a good thing. After talking with experts who use them frequently, they all prefer the handle, balance, and cutting ability of the Cold Steel Jungle Machete. It's a little shorter at 16 inches. The weight is the same. But like I said, the Cold Steel comes with a decent Cor-Ex sheath. I have no idea why only Rothco makes sheaths for the Ontario, and the Rothco sheaths are all pretty bad. That's not entirely true. Ontario makes their own sheath for it, and it's ever worse than the Rothco versions. The positive to the Ontario is that they warranty their products indefinitely.

      Shawn Clayborn I have never tried the TOPS machetes. I believe the tops machetes are overpriced and someone was telling me they have a tendency to fly out of your hand. It's hard to pay more than $20 for a machete it just doesn't make sense to me. When using your machete you should never feel the need to baby the blade a machete is a beater blade you're not afraid to hit rocks with it. Mahalo for watching

    I like mine but have a few complaints! (1) it comes dull (2) Comes with no sheath (3) handle is very uncomfortable. Other than these things, this is really a good machete. For around $25 it is worth it. The 3 things listed above can be fixed! The steel is US and is good steel. So it can be sharpened, you can buy a sheath for under $20. I dont know how to fix the handle but i can wear gloves lol! On a scale 1-10 with 10 being the best i will give it a 7. Would i buy it again? Yes i would! Hope this helps!

    This review was 5 years ago. I bought the Ontario 18" D-handle machete with the Rothco polymer sheath. The D-handle isn't ideal. However, Ontario states that the machete is now 1075 carbon steel, as opposed to the 1095 military version. Personally, I prefer 1075, as it's less brittle, and less prone to catastrophic failure. That said, I'll be receiving the Cold Steel Jungle Machete soon. From everything I've seen, and my experience with Cold Steel machetes, the CS Jungle Machete will outperform the Ontario, and has a better grip. I'm not going to return the Ontario until I receive the Cold Steel. Ontario's switch to 1075 carbon steel is a positive. However, the poor handle and lack of a decent sheath are detrimental IMO. I may keep them both. We'll see. But, if the Cold Steel 97JMS is far superior, I'll return the Ontario. From the tests I've seen, the Cold Steel Jungle Machete outperforms the Ontario, and actually comes with a decent sheath, all for a lower cost.

    You probably don't like the handle because you have horrible body mechanics. Wild arm flail and not using the END of the blade (the fastest moving part). That's not exactly efficient. Short swings from the wrist vs "Pull one out from the back forty". Watch the native Hawaiians. They don't swing big.
