  • A video on how I modified my Ontario 18" machete handle. Its a very tough machete with a fairly uncomfortable handle.

I just got one of these machetes, and for under $20 it's a great blade, but the handle is truly horrible. As we speak, I'm arranging a play date with my belt sander. Thank you for the inspiration!

shovelhead8 simple and I believe most people have the tools to accomplish this modification. A lot of people have belt Sanders just for Home Improvement so easy to come by. Mahalo brah

Great vid, a good shaped handle is so important. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Nice work. I am glad you discussed PPE when grinding. Do you need the palm swell on both sides? Are you using the machete with both hands?
Wearing gloves while using a machete works, too, for any large knife or hand tool. Customizing your equipment helps, a lot, but the gloves give you some well needed protection.

Good video! Love seeing how. Others use and modify their machetes. Also PVC sheaths are cheap, durable and easy for anyone to make.

Larry Koziol I'm going to use PVC just like kydex. Heat and a press. Mahalo for stopping by

    The "Jungle Axe"! Love mine.
I use "Stick Handler" brand hockey handle tape to wrap my handles.
Good stuff and only 8 bucks/shipped. Try it if you get the chance. It's breathable
and residue free. I think you'll really like it especially in a hot humid climate.

It remains very grippy and seals unto itself, like a good rifle wrap. :)

Why don't the people who run the Ontario Knife Company listen to the numerous complaints about the ratshit handle and fix the problem? It's a really great machete except for the dumb handle. The first thing I did when I bought mine was to drill off the handle and attach two thin slabs of Fiddleback Maple. I can now use it all day without discomfort. C'mon Ontario, smarten up!

Sorry for the negative review, but I couldn't finishing watching after he turned on the belt sander trying to shape the grip. There are way better ways to remove material that are safer and produce better results on something by hand. Faster is not always better.
