i’m not a baker but one thing i’ve learned from baking vids is to do a crumb coat, which is where you ice a thin layer of white buttercream on the outside of the cake and then refrigerate it before you do your colored buttercream. i’d recommend the channel “howtocakeit” (who is also canadian 🇨🇦)! her cakes are really professional and complex but she does give lots of good tips in her vids like how to do crumb coats, how to smooth out icing, using fondant, how to make ganache, etc. :)
My mom used to do a small cake business and I helped her a lot, but when you frost the cake, you're supposed to start with a "crumb coat" which is essentially just a really thin layer of frosting (thin enough that you can see the cake through it), then you refrigerate it for a while and then go back and do more frosting over the crumb coat. It makes the frosting much more even. You can also get a flat spatula, dip it in hot water and run it along the sides and top to make the frosting SUPER smooth looking.

A good way to put the frosting in the bag is put it in a glass and fold the sides over that makes it soooo much easier (also while I’m watching this I’m drooling because I just love icing)
Pro tip for the frosting : beat the butter alone first until its white and creamy and then add the powdered sugar little by little. Tip for the cake leveler : idk how to explain but basically you place the leveler on the table and just sway front and back and front and back ... or just watch a tutorial (I’m extremely bad at explaining but ok 😂) Tip for cake stacking : just cut the same cake in half and there you go , you don’t need to mix and match different pieces . Simply use the same cake
@@shadwafouad1127 the bake even cake straps, they’re really good. You don’t have to cut the dome thing from the top of the layers and it prevents the brown crust on the edges of the cakes.

ik a lot of people are saying that Mia used the cake leveller wrong but as someone who doesn't know how to bake I didn't even give it a second thought. Tbh I would've used it the same way Mia did lmao
You think you’re going to fit a normal sized cake in that little area she did? She’s lucky she had small cakes or she would have been so confused why the cake didn’t fit between the metal and the wire. The feet of the cake cutter should be put on the table and use a saw like motion to cut across to get a level cake. Hence why hers wasn’t even lol
You might find this to be an easier way to smooth frosting: keep your icing knife in boiling hot water in between smoothing. The heated blade makes it super easy to smooth and does more of the work for you!
The wire is adjustable and can move up and down, you are supposed to hold it so the feet are on the plate and you have the wire adjusted to the layer size then use a saw motion so it’s entirely even and stable the whole time. As a cake decorator I cringed but I love Mia
Baker here, tip for getting the cake off the turntable: there are these things called cake boards that are little rounds of cardboard you put under your cake. They sell them at craft stores, but you can also make your own out of clean cardboard boxes. I put a little bit of frosting on the turntable, then stick the cake board onto it, then put a little frosting on the center of the cake board, and then the cake, so everything stays put. It makes moving the cake super easy!
Or use a palette knife to pick it up and set it down. She actually sorta did it the right way. That's how they do it in professional bakeries and that's how they taught me at bakery school. It's not that difficult when you've done it a couple of times. Just stick it in in the middle underneath the cake, angle it up, put your hand underneath, pick it up, set it down and slide the palette right out. :)
Biggest bakers tip I can give you is to never try to make something without following a recipe. Baking is a science and it can need precise meassurements at times. And you have invented a new way of using a cake leveller 😂 ❤️
YES, this is so important! A person who's used to baking knows the intricacies and can change recipes on a whim, but a beginner should just follow the recipe as much as they can. Otherwise it'll almost always fail lol.
I feel like starting with a crumb coat might help with the frosting smoothing etc. Also placing them in the center of the turntable. Making the icing decorations separately, freezing and placing them may also help with precision.
You could crumb coat your cake if you wanted to be 'professional'. Its a very thin layer of icing used to 'glue' crumbs down and it seal in the cake’s moisture and provides an even base for when you decorate it. You do the crum coat then put it in the fridge and then take it out to decorate it 💕
As an actual baker-confectioner this whole video is just me reminding myself that she is not a professional and doing a great job for not being one! The use of the cake leveler took me out lmao, also a tip, if you're making a small cake like this, use a smaller palette knife, makes it a lot easier imo!
Hi Mia! Professional Caker Decorator here- next time it’ll make things way way way easier on you if you freeze your cake before you try icing it. That way you won’t have to worry about crumbs mixing up into your pretty colored frosting :)
echoing other bakers tips i’ve seen down below, follow the icing recipe, watch a leveling tutorial (i stink at it) , freeze your cakes, then do a crumb coat of icing and freeze again before you do a layer of smooth or pretty decorations. you were super patient and have a natural ability to decorate! they were super cute!!
Day 8 of asking Mia to buy paint colors off of the name only! I think it'd be so fun cause they have funny names. And maybe do a painting with them! Sorry if you're already working on it Mia
A tip I learned in high school. It’s called “dirty icing” a cake basically you use your white icing and spread it very thin on a cooled cake and it doesn’t have to be perfect then you chill the cake that way you don’t get crumbs in your final layer of icing.
@@qtflxwer9498 thank you!! But the thing is, adding more icing sugar will make it more unhealthy and more sweet. And my family isn’t a big fan of really sweet things. Thanks for the help tho ❤️😊
The difference between frosting and icing is frosting is thicker for cakes and started with a butter base usually. Icing is thinner for drizzling over a lemon bundt or muffins and started with confectionery sugar. People use the name interchangeably but they typically aren't. She's making a muffin drizzle icing then buys a thick fluffy frosting for the cakes.
I make icing from powder sugar and water or juice and maybe some food colouring....and use it to decorate cookies...seems there are different views out there about what icing is
@@hannahmeyer4847 yes and no you make it thick out of confectionery sugar to ice cookies but you still wouldn't ice a cake with it. It's still icing, not frosting.
Frosting Tips: Cake boards are the best. But it might also work if you add frosting to stick your cake to the parchment paper so it doesn’t slide around. Fold your piping bag down on the outside when you fill it with frosting so you don’t have to push it all down and get air bubbles.

My favourite thing about this is that it just made me feel like we were baking together, 5 minutes after deciding we wanted to be bakers, with no knowledge or experience. This was great.
mia: has the proffesional tools
also mia: uses them the wrong way
🤣😂
Wait until she discovers that you can pipe letters onto parchment paper, freeze them, and then transfer them onto the cake 👀
Omg. 👀
Yoooooo what
oh
@@yinhannasjournal it gives really nice flat letters too!!
Wait what?
When she said her icing magically trippled in size I though she was gonna say that mama maples helped lol
Hahah
Mia we need a t-shirt "Practice makes better than before" lol
Yes!! Haha I would actually buy that😂
I agree 😊
I prefer that saying because practice does not make perfect xD practice only improves a distaster
A good way to put the frosting in the bag is put it in a glass and fold the sides over that makes it soooo much easier (also while I’m watching this I’m drooling because I just love icing)
Mya, did you notice that every body spells our name as maya?
The way she used that level makes me want to cryyyyy
Literally it physically hurt me 😂
I said “no!” out loud
Was tall her no like I was there with her 😂
Me too! I cringed soooo bad. And she was too confident about it lol
Pro tip for the frosting : beat the butter alone first until its white and creamy and then add the powdered sugar little by little.
Tip for the cake leveler : idk how to explain but basically you place the leveler on the table and just sway front and back and front and back ... or just watch a tutorial (I’m extremely bad at explaining but ok 😂)
Tip for cake stacking : just cut the same cake in half and there you go , you don’t need to mix and match different pieces . Simply use the same cake
She can buy one of those water wrap things for leveling
@@kaekee9727 what're those?
@@shadwafouad1127 the bake even cake straps, they’re really good. You don’t have to cut the dome thing from the top of the layers and it prevents the brown crust on the edges of the cakes.
Yeah lol I was confused what she was doing with the leveller 😂
Right I did an explanation but it was sooooo bad
I love how she explained how her frosting as kid turned out horrible and then proceeded to throw away the recipe?? lmaooo
shes so funny i love her
I am a cake decorator and this is extremely entertaining! Yes, practice does make better and good for you for trying! 🎉
So now can we all collectively agree that Mia's channel is a place where she flexes on us with all of her 10, 15, 20, ♾️ talents?!?!
Like, there's absolutely nothing this girl cannot do?!
.
.
Not complaining tho, I'M HERE FOR IT!
Yes there is :D She can't do buttercream.
You mean tho? Not ‘toh’
She cant bake 😅 but still a queen
She definitely can’t bake haha
@@valeriew.37 ahh yes
This is a new version of mia that we are seeing today I SWEARRR!!! She is so talkative and clumsy like it's lovee
ik a lot of people are saying that Mia used the cake leveller wrong but as someone who doesn't know how to bake I didn't even give it a second thought. Tbh I would've used it the same way Mia did lmao
Cringing. Lol
You think you’re going to fit a normal sized cake in that little area she did? She’s lucky she had small cakes or she would have been so confused why the cake didn’t fit between the metal and the wire. The feet of the cake cutter should be put on the table and use a saw like motion to cut across to get a level cake. Hence why hers wasn’t even lol
same lmao
You might find this to be an easier way to smooth frosting: keep your icing knife in boiling hot water in between smoothing. The heated blade makes it super easy to smooth and does more of the work for you!
Ok I just want to say I LOVE watching Mia do diy's as a beginner, it gives me a realistic idea of what will happen.
I'm not a baker and I've never used a cake leveler in my life but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be used like Mia did 😂
My sister bakes. It bothered me so bas how mia did it lol. For sure not righ
The wire is adjustable and can move up and down, you are supposed to hold it so the feet are on the plate and you have the wire adjusted to the layer size then use a saw motion so it’s entirely even and stable the whole time. As a cake decorator I cringed but I love Mia
I screamed.
@@angelinalionetta685 me too!!!
I literally said 'Oh Mia Mia no' 😂 then her moms laugh popped in my head lol
Mia: *makes box cakes*
Mia: *buys premade frosting*
Also Mia: “this is seriously a lot of work “
hahahahahahaha gotta love her
ok but i couldn’t do any better 😂😭
Something I found out is that, even if you use a box cake if you do milk instead of water it’ll be more fluffy and moist 🥰
Mia: I tried to make icing so many times and it never went well.
Also Mia: I am throwing away the recipe.
I can´t wait to see the result :D
I laughed so hard when she said that too! ☺️
@@lyssmorgan888 and when she brought the pound of icing :D
LOL my bad hehehehe
@@MiaMaples You made my day 100% better :D
And you have invented a new way of using a cake leveller 😂
❤️
YES, this is so important! A person who's used to baking knows the intricacies and can change recipes on a whim, but a beginner should just follow the recipe as much as they can. Otherwise it'll almost always fail lol.
I feel like starting with a crumb coat might help with the frosting smoothing etc. Also placing them in the center of the turntable. Making the icing decorations separately, freezing and placing them may also help with precision.
Mia’s hair was giving me anxiety the entire time she was decorating the cakes 😂 you did so good, though!!
Sammme
YES! I couldn’t stop thinking that her hair was going to be in the cake....😬
I thought I was the only one
Yessss!
This 😊
Anxiety overload.... but loved the result!
You could crumb coat your cake if you wanted to be 'professional'. Its a very thin layer of icing used to 'glue' crumbs down and it seal in the cake’s moisture and provides an even base for when you decorate it. You do the crum coat then put it in the fridge and then take it out to decorate it 💕
She usually does xx
As an actual baker-confectioner this whole video is just me reminding myself that she is not a professional and doing a great job for not being one! The use of the cake leveler took me out lmao, also a tip, if you're making a small cake like this, use a smaller palette knife, makes it a lot easier imo!
yes! also, if she chilled the cakes before icing, it would make them less crumbly 🥰
And crumb coating first would have helped
omgosh! same! look at my comment!
Omg I searched for a comment about the cake leveler this was the only one! I was starting to think maybe I use them wrong
@@shelby_3 there are *far* too many comments in this section to find yours. what was the general context of it?
It’s called “dirty icing” a cake basically you use your white icing and spread it very thin on a cooled cake and it doesn’t have to be perfect then you chill the cake that way you don’t get crumbs in your final layer of icing.
its called crumb coating lol and its common knowledge
What a great idea!
@@SiminRomi To those who are familiar with baking maybe, but not everyone knows about it
Awesome! I never heard of that! Thank you for sharing 😍
@@lepandablop9039 you really dont have to be familiar with baking to know crumb coating, if anything the technique is common sense

perfectionist Mia: I feel like it's missing a sprinkle
Oh no Mia, that cake leveler! And then saying, 'I can't do an even layer' and you don't know it was so good for that way of cutting it💜
Mia: it's so thick
Me: who makes buttercream at work all the time. "Girl, that's literally so thin. It shouldn't drip off your spatula like that" 😂
I think she meant thick as in lacking air :)
@@sofiasofia-em Probably, it just made me laugh 😄
Every time I make icing it’s always so runny and even when I put it in the fridge for several hours nothing changes. Do you have any tips?
@@jineenmansour Add more icing sugar :D
@@qtflxwer9498 thank you!! But the thing is, adding more icing sugar will make it more unhealthy and more sweet. And my family isn’t a big fan of really sweet things. Thanks for the help tho ❤️😊
The difference between frosting and icing is frosting is thicker for cakes and started with a butter base usually. Icing is thinner for drizzling over a lemon bundt or muffins and started with confectionery sugar. People use the name interchangeably but they typically aren't. She's making a muffin drizzle icing then buys a thick fluffy frosting for the cakes.
Usually you'd do the sides and then the top but yours looked perfect anyway!
@@Momster12 yes thats what i said.cookies not cake. Dont really now what confectionary sugar is...i only now powder sugar and normal sugar 😅
Hannah Meyer confectionery sugar is powdered sugar

Also Mia- *using the leveler wrong* 😂
This is content ❤️
mia putting sprinkles on with tweezers is the funniest and most relatable thing ever haha
Mia has been so much more cheerful and happy lately 🥺 we love to see it!
Frosting Tips: Cake boards are the best. But it might also work if you add frosting to stick your cake to the parchment paper so it doesn’t slide around. Fold your piping bag down on the outside when you fill it with frosting so you don’t have to push it all down and get air bubbles.
I love how she is just eating the buttercream throughout the whole video 🤣 but honestly I would do the same thing!
I love how Mia half-way dressed up for us but we all love her for her comfort-loving, sweatpants-wearing self and she could make a video in her pajamas and we wouldnt bat an eye haahhaha
They turned out so good!!! Baking is one of my hobbies and I love cake decorating. A good tip that made a world of difference when I first started is put a dab of frosting on the turn table and then put your cake. It keeps it from moving around while icing. Also it would be so cool to see a homemade pasta video!
why was this literally my favorite video you’ve ever done 🥺 pls do more. maybe with your family members all doing their own mini cakes?
The music was so calming, I love it! And the focus with the camera on the cake when you try to move it makes it so fun to watch. I really enjoyed this video, hopefully you'll make much more of these. I'll definitely watch :)
As a pastry chef this had me panicking. However, the end result was cute and for your first time you did great!!!
Video idea: wear a different tueta matoshi dress every day for a week like to the grocery store and the drug store and things like that

When you're trying to fill a piping bag, what I always do is to put the bag in a tall cup and wrap the part sticking out around the edge of the cup like you would do for a trashbag, and you can just scoop it in
