The plant Eric worried about getting his hand eaten was a male cycad - some of the oldest plants on the planet.
The seaweed that tasted vinegary was mozuku.
I didn't get a proper look at the turtle but it looked a bit like a red-eared slider. A popular pet turtle from southern US and now on the UN's list of 100 most invasive species.
The "palm tree" was a tree fern. You'll see them in Kyushu too. You'll also see them in "The Last Samurai" because that was mostly filmed in NZ where there are lots. (That's why you occasionally feel you're in Lord of the Rings. The remainder was mainly on Shoshazan behind Himeji.
Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of a fungus. The vegetative part is called mycelium.
Eric - never lose your boyish enthusiasm. It's catching. Great movie.

The little lime is called calamansi, and the spam nori sandwich is also found in Hawaii, it evolved during WW2 when Spam from Wisconsin was shipped for soldiers' ration and the locals incorporated it to their meals.

I came here to say this. Crazy how an American soldiers ration from over 70 years ago is now a regular part of the regional fare.

Some tidbits I thought of while watching your awesome video (my mom is Okinawan so I am pretty excited for this series!):
    - American foods like spam, hershey's, 7 up, etc became commonplace when the US was in control of Okinawa, so much of it has become part of modern Okinawan culture.
    - Many Okinawan foods are made with lard (ex- chinsukou, satandagi). Pigs are a big thing!
    - Fukushuen was created bc Naha and Fuzhou, China are sister cities. It's still true that Okinawa is influenced by Chinese culture though.
    - In the last video, the stuff you thought was egg in the champuru was actually "fu", which is a kind of bread that soaks up a lot of water and juices. There was egg in that champuru too but mostly fu.
If you have questions about anything you saw in Okinawa, just ask! \(^u^)/ Keep it up guys

Great video! Fun lily fact - if you buy lilies for show, when they open take out the pods before they dry because the orange powder gets everywhere and stains. The pods are used for cross-pollination - bees and insects will come for the nectar in the lily and the powder will stick to them. When I sold flowers, we'd have to be mindful of the lilies and pull out the pods or else they wouldn't sell. haha

Good video! You may have found this out already but "soba" can sometimes be a generic term for noodles (as in "yaki-soba" which just refers to "fried noodles"; they are usually not made of buckwheat flour). You could also say "Chuka soba", or "Chinese noddles", to refer to ramen type noodles in general. It seems like "Okinawa soba" was influenced by this "Chuka soba" (which was actually called "Shina soba" back then --- "Shina" is considered a bit derogative now), and that's why Okinawan people use the term "soba" for those wheat-based noodles. Hope you liked them!

Back when we were affiliated with Nichiren Shoshu. Some friends who went on Pilgrimage to the Head Temple brought back maps of the Temple grounds for me as a souvenir. On the map were clouds as well. I was told those were the areas you could smoke.
Okinawa was it's own Kingdom for a long period of time and they had relations with China, I believe long before the Japanese. So they were directly influenced by Chinese architecture, especially among religious and the wealthy class.

Hello Kyde and Eric! I just wanted to share with you (if you don't already know about it) that you actually CAN make a puzzle of any picture (why not an epic scenery of a city, it's my personal favorite when it comes to puzzles). All you need is the app/program Microsoft Jigsaw and you can make a virtual puzzle out of any picture. Unfortunately the "expert" level only lets you (at least me) divide the picture into 216 pieces. Great vids. Keep up the good work and props to Eric for exercising that hitchhiker's thumb. You're the champ!

Regarding question near 29:38. Ryukyu (Okinawa) Island was a independent Kingdom until Japan annexed it in 1879 during Japanese military expansion and invasion of Asia. In the previous 1500 years, Ryukyu Kingdom mainly had a political relation and trade relationship with China. Therefore the native Ryukyu-ans historically had a strong Chinese influence, which is still evident today.

It is so good that you give the videos enough time to develop a really good flavor of what you are experiencing! Attention span is an underrated thing--I feel the same kind of mental imagery as when reading a book, and time goes by so quickly. 0:17:57 That's a Cycad, likely a "King Sago" since they're native to Okinawa and southern Japan. Cycads are cool because just like the Gingko tree and Wollemi Pine, they're living fossils. Their kind existed when the Dinosaurs were alive. Their ancient relatives, which were identical in appearance except for being much larger were eaten by Hadrosaurs and Brachiosaurs... I never studied them too extensively but I think that's a female flower. Individual Cycad plants are male or female- just like Gingko trees.
0:47:57 More Cycads. They do call them "Sago Palms" or "Cycad Palms" but they're not really in the usual palm tree family.

The style of the rice ball that Eric ate at the market was called "Onigirazu." The term "Onigiri" was derived from the verve "Nigiru" which means squeezing on the palm. "Onigirazu" is a type of "Onigiri has become so popular in recent years, and it is like a rice sandwich, and you do not squeeze rice on your palm to make one. So the term "Onigirazu is the negative form of "Onigiri." If you search "Onigirazu" you find lots of "how to make" videos on youtube. BTW spam was probably the influence from the long US occupation after the war. Okinawa was occupied by US until '70s, and still got a big US base which is considered a trouble maker on the peaceful islands.

Lol this was awesome guys! I hope you feel better soon Kyde! (I love Goofy Movie too! The second one with Max going to college is my favorite)
My question for the end stuffs: Would you guys ever do a video about how you recreate your favorite meals at home? Like Japanese dishes that maybe you dont want to go out for, or even like American dishes you make when you want something different.
Im interested to see the domestic side to living abroad. The grocery stores look so cool there!

I don't think we eat in a typical way at home. Someday we will make a video about it, it's kinda strange. Hahahaha. -E

Hey "kyde"!! How do you really pronounce your name? It really sounds almost like, "kady", short for Katherine. I thought it be a weird spelling for Katherine. Where is your name coming from?

I enjoyed the number of theme park references (two!) in this video. I'll stick with that theme, and turn to Disney because I'm a fan. What are your favorite rides at any Disney Park?

Aww man the Pineapple Factory is really cool. You could have tried the different wines and cookies and cakes and visit the shop where you can buy different food items. I was hoping you guys would have gone in. I haven't been there in years but we visited often when ever people came over to visit.

Never pet the lobsters, but my parents and several others I saw would have their kids just sit and watch the lobsters in the tanks for awhile as a distraction while they shopped.

AHH! it's so nice to feel invited to your adventures. I'll sit here with my wisdom teeth removed hopped up on painkillers and laughing at the hilarity of you two. You guys make this whole bedbound mess infinitely more enjoyable!
Question! Do you guys keep houseplants? Nothing brings the out of doors home quite like some fresh air making plants :)
Much love from Idaho, land of potatoes and onions

So, did you visit a karate dojo? Okinawa is the home of karate! For many centuries, Okinawa was a tributary to China. Karate developed as a blending of Chinese Kung Fu and the local grappling/wrestling techniques (te).

Hey, was at the B/G October Fest just two weeks ago. Was digging the little El Camino truck. Another great video you two. Does any of your family come to visit you? It would make for a great video of you taking them to some of your favorite places in Tokyo or the surrounding area. Just a thought.
