thanks for watching.
Excellent review. Thanks so much. I've been LOVING the Z6, 35 & 50 1.8s'. I love the lack of breathing and lens drive noise from the new glass. Cheers!
Well thanks for the comparison to the D850 and the F mount glass. These tests confirmed that I made the right decision with the Z series, I have both the 35mm 1.8s and the 50mm 1.8s and they are fantastic glass. Until a test like this I was just guessing that they would be better, this confirmed they ARE better.
Loving my Z6. Using it as a wedding backup body at the moment. When the dual card body comes, I’m all in.
RICCI-- I've been shooting Nikon for 50 yrs and am still using my D4 from 2012! After watching you Ricci , now am ready to get into z cameras s-lenses! Thanks Ricci! Randy B.
Z mount lenses are better than nikkor F mount lenses.
But there are still better alternatives on F mount on every Focal lenght from third party lens manufacturers.
Thank you! Great video. Best channel for Nikon photographers.
Z lens=beast, the end. People told me not to get the Z6 cuz there ain't many lenses out yet, but I didn't regret it at all❤
Many Lenses mean you can able to grab them all???Answer is no way for hobby.
So Z is answer, You buy only few lenses and it cover your need with BEST quality.
I just started doing this same test, but with the 50mm and on a Z6. I own the F mount 50, I rented the Z mount lens. I am only in my second day of playing around, but so far I am liking the Z mount better. I think this video just cost me a couple thousand dollars, because it confirms what I have been seeing.
Sorry about that 😉
Great video and perfectly illustrates why G lenses should still be considered for photographing people. Imo modern lenses are too sharp when focusing on faces, highlight too many imperfections and add additional work in post processing to get skin that looks flattering. Using the 50 1.2 at over 100 weddings I found myself landing focus more on the upper chest to save myself some work in lightroom.
A lot of wedding photographers end up getting the 56mm 1.4g. I personally sacrificed full frame and found a deal on a Leica tl summilux 35 and it has both sharpness and soft bokeh with the high contrast of the z lenses
Ricci, I always look for your comparison videos first because they are so well done and illustrate the differences if any, clearly.
I have the 35 S but have not compared it because I do not have a 35mm prime F mount, but the sharpness well away from the center is obvious wide open can be seen without zooming in. That is quite an achievement over other brands or F mount Nikkor lenses.
It just makes me even more anxious to see the same comparison of the 85 1.8 S and the 1.4G and 1.8G. The other lenses I am waiting for is the 70-200 2.8 S. With those two, my kit will be pretty complete for a while.
The 85mm video is underway it might be in two parts cuz there so much to cover.
I’m excited to show you all the 70-200mm really can’t wait for that lens.
Thanks again, Ricci! These videos are enlightening, for sure.
I feel like most people wont notice any sharpness differences because most people wont be cropping in that much, and honestly if im stopped down that far i would rather have more blur in my out of focus areas so i think ill be going for the 35 1.8g, as soon as i find one for a good price
Another great video Ricci!! Your videos are well laid out, informative and easy to understand. They are common sense demonstrations that are easily repeatable by us viewers.
Keep up the excellent work!!!
Great video showing just how on top of the optics game Nikon is with the Z series.
Excellent comparison! More videos please. How about the 85mm?
On the way
Vielen Dank für diesen hervorragenden Vergleich. Gut gemacht, wie alle Videos, die ich bisher von Dir gesehen habe.
Great video. Really helpful for those who are thinking of replacing their F lenses with Z ones. Your video of 50mm comparison made me buy 50 1.8S. Can't wait to see 85mm 1.8G vs 1.8S comparison.
Thanks for watching !
Great concept and very well structured video! Best comparison out there, thanks!
Thanks for the great video, I have a Nikon Z6 and the 24-70mm F4 and wanting to choose either a 35mm or 50mm prime lens and your videos have convinced me to spend the extra on the Z series lens, best reviews on Nikon gear I know of, thanks..
If you had to make a choice between carrying few of these z primes or the 24-70 2.8S what would you choose? I have the 24-70 2.8S, 24-70S f4 and the 35 1.8S. I usually keep the 24-70 2.8S on the camera and don't use the 35mm enough. Your test show it's an amazing lens. Im considering going with a 3 prime out fit at some point, but the 24-70 is the best midrange zoom Ive ever used. The quality of these new lenses are amazing.
The 24-70 f2.8 S is fantastic and it’s a tough choice. Do you give up the flexibility of the zoom for the better picture quality of the primes. I’m thinking I might do a whole video on the primes vs the zoom to show how much of a difference there. To some people I feel the picture quality of the zoom is good enough.
@@RicciTalks That would be incredible insightful and helpful, thanks you for the great content!
Another amazing review. This is one of the best channels.
when i am looking for ANSWERS from youtube, and if i see the video from Ricci Talks. i just go for it. i know i dont need to watch anything else. His videos gives me clarity.
Hi Ricci, thanks a lot for the detailed comparison. This really helps and is much more usefull than the many pseudo reviews only stating a vague personal estimate such as "this is a great lens, cause it's tack sharp". BUT, no thanks to convincing me to spent more money on the Z 35mm than its F-mount predesssor 😉. Regards, Thomas
What do you have the video AF settings at for this video? Seems a bit snappier than the default.
Thanks again Ricci! I am in the process of thinking about a new body next to my D750 and thanks to your videos I know it'll be a Z6 or Z7. Not sure about that yet! But the new lenses are convincing and take photographing to the next level.
Thanks for watching
I love the Z7 because of the high megapixel count but if that’s not something you use or interested in then the Z6 is the way to go.
I really wish the nikon z system lenses (actually i wish this for the whole system) payed more attention to industrial design. The whole design looks incredibly awkward, and those very long nose tube style lenses they have look atrocious. I know people say they don't care about this, but cameras are very much a designed object like anything else and it really does matter. I actually want to buy the 1.4g lens over the 1.8s lens simply over industrial design itself. it looks way better on camera than the 1.8s does - even with that awkward chunky terribly designed ftz adapter.
Brilliant comparision Ricci ! Many Thanks.
I am now a little bit "dissappointed" about the "minor" quality of my F-glass.
Up to now I was happy.
I think I have the classical GAS, which means: Gear Aquisition Syndrome.
:)
Idk. I just picked up this lens today (Z) because I wanted a 35mm auto focus prime lens for the Z mount. It is a great lens. It's super sharp, all that, etc. But I have to be real. The Laowa 35mm f/0.95 takes more artistic and interesting photos. I'm going to use the Z lens for clients/critical focus. But there really is no comparison when it comes to interesting and art stylistic photos. I'm glad I have both. When I'm doing my personal shooting and I'm not getting paid... I can make some crazy good looking photos with the Chinese lens. If I feel rushed, I don't wanna ever use that lens. They are different use cases. I know what look I prefer paid vs pleasure.
How would you rate this against Sigma Art 1.4 ? I'm wondering if I should sell it to get native glass
Hi, did you sell it ? Now, I have same problem, I have Sigma ART 1.4 and Z6 and I thinking to sell it and buy Nikkor Z 1.8, how you solved this problem ?
@@MrGarruk1 sold it long time ago. New S lens is so much better and quicker to focus.
Great and informative video as always!
Thanks for doing these comparisons. I’m just curious, I know that Nikon automatically bakes in a lens profile with the Z lenses. There is no way that i know of not to import with out these setting being baked in. Were all of the tabs zeroed out in the develop Module when you did the comparisons? Because the Nikon S lenses come with an automatic profile that adds contrast, noise reduction and sharpening adjustments.
Same thoughts here...
Definitely prefer the 1.4G bokeh but it’s not super clear when photographing cameras in studio. Really look forward to the Z 1.2 version (or just 1.4) since the 1.8 version does seem to have inferior bokeh imho.
just one question : is there a possibility that the color fringing is removed by software on the raw files on the Z system ? Is there any Fringing on video files ?
Distortion and vignetting too.
Thank you for the effort. I would really like to see a comparising to the Sigma Art 35 and Z 35 1.8.
The Sigma is Better Than any Nikkor f-mounts so i'll like to see the best battle.
It could be something I do in the future I just don’t use sigma lenses so I’d have to try and get hold of one first.
Really interested to see such comparison
Always a treat watching your videos..
Thanks so much :)
thank you so much for this review, really hard to find such great neutral reviews of z glass :)
would like to see the other Z lenses Compared ( also against the Sigma ART )
Great comparison - wondering if you would be able to do a comparison with the 35 z 1.8 vs the 40mm Z f/2.0 Z pancake lens?
Just my $0.02.. I’ve owned the F 35 1.8 many times & now own the Z 35 1.8 as I bought it with the Z6ii. I personally don’t see $600 worth of incremental value. I have the Z 24-70 f4 and it lives on my Z6ii. I also own a Z50. I’m actually going to sell my Z 35 1.8. For anyone not borderline pro level the good ol’ F 35 will be more than enough. I have amazing family portraits on our wall from that lens that are better than some taken by ‘pros’.
Thank you so much, excellent channel and reviews ! I am gonna keep my Nikon G system for a while though, as it is fully compatible with my Nikon F100 and D3000 CCD cameras ;)
The price difference for a prime lens ill stick to the cheaper option with my FTZ adapter
Thanks for another great tutorial. I recently purchased the z7 & have been watching your channel, which has been extremely helpful & insightful. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on using monolights with the z7. I'm mostly a studio photographer and have been having trouble with using my profoto lights with the z7. I've seen tons of youtube videos on using speedlights with the camera but nothing about using monolights. Thanks again!
Great review, thanks!
sir can u upload video with same concept but using 85mm Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 s lens and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art DG HSM.
Very good comparison, had been wondering if 24-70 S f4 would be significantly better than 24-70 S f2.8
In your first photo (around the 3rd minute), the 35mm S lens looks wider than the G series.
In fact, in all photos the S series lens seems a bit wider.
Because of focus breathing
@@MVargabass That makes sense.
Great video, thanks
Would be interesting to see how the new Viltrox 35 mm 1.8 lens for Z mount would perform within these native Nikon lenses ?!?
we need this with Z 35mm 1.4
I like the Intro British Piano music ! 👌
In these "Compare to F-Mount" videos, can you please compare when CORRECTED for Purple Fringing, in Lightroom? In the real world, we're going to use that adjustment. So I really don't think the fringing emphasis that you make time and time again is relevant -- unless compared against Fringing Corrected images. That's when we can see what a result would look like. JUST A REQUEST. Thank you! Love your videos.
Hi Ricci on the same line would it be possible to have a comparison of the NEW 28mm z f2.8 (the normal or the SE as the interior should be the same) vs an old 28mm f2.8 ais which has good reputation. This new z 28mm made to be a good companion of the ZFC is rather expensive for its plastic quality (including the mount - Shame on you Nikon) so good to se if the quality is far above a 40 years old lense …
This video doesn't only show the comparison between the lenses... It proves that Mirrorless cameras are the future... #FutureIsMirrorless
Another excellent review.
IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for:
Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850)
AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!)
Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650)
Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.
Maybe adobe force applying color correction to nikon Z files as it does with distortion 14-30? Try Capture One or maybe other non adobe software.
Great review man
I wish u could compare the Z 35 1.8 s to the new tamron 35 1.4 .. they say its the finest lens ever made and want to know if its true
I brought it. And I didn't like for my Z6 or D850 and I returned it. My sigma 24-35 F2 performed better than the 1.4 tamron. I just purchased the Z 1.8 and I'm about to try it out right now.
How the F mount behave in video is much better. At this point I think I need all new Z mount glass. If thats the case then that opens up looking at the competition.
do you think you can do a comparison between the z 35mm or 85mm vs the tamron 35mm or 85mm for Nikon?
Thank, now i'm ready.
Love your vids. Can you compare the Nikon 35 1.8 S and the Tamron 35mm 1.4? I am leaning heavily toward the Tamron. I will use it on my Z6 camera thanks
Me too.
Thanks for the test. Obviously, the F-Mount 35/1.4 gets much better from aperture 2.8 on and catches up with the Z-Mount. Why were no tests shown with aperture 4 and aperture 5.6? Is it maybe better than the Z-Mount?
I have personal experience with the F-Mount 35/1.4. The image quality is fantastic with apertures 2.8; 4; 5.6 and 8. In addition, it is relatively compact and the colours are not sterile but warm and vivid, the bokeh is fragrant. I can still highly recommend it. But it is also true that with an open aperture it is not as good as other lenses of comparable speed.
Nice review! Does the 35 1.8s have "Onion rings" bokeh?
I have a Z6 + FTZ + 35 1.8G ED, if I put 35 1.8Z, will I get something more in terms of resolution and sharpness?
Ohh, man, couldn't help notice that sweet z 85mm 1.8s. When you releasing a video on that?
Soon :)
has the z35mm 1.8 a focusing noise as the f mouth lenses? thanks
Really the Nikkor 35 F1.4 N has that much of purple fringing? I am thinking to buy that for my Nikon D800e
Great comparison, loving the new z lenses 😃
Cool thx 😎
That was good, but you did not give any comments on the video focussing.
Found it thanks. Gary
Z mounts are incredible, but i just can't buy them bc i'm the owner of à z50 and the z lenses are not made for apsc... it's so frustrating
I’m cautiously gonna pass on the 35 until I see the price for the 24 1.8 coming soon this year
I’ll have a lot of videos on the 24mm f1.8 planned it’s looking like an incredible sharp lens.
Excellent as always but just wondered about the difference in view angles right at the start of the Lightroom comparisons, the Z lens (left image) appears to have a wider angle of view that the F mount (right image), is there a slight difference in the AoV, is one lens in reality a 33 or 34mm rather than 35mm or is one a 36 or 37mm?
Martin Norden I noticed the same thing as well. I’m happy to be a little wider than to lose a little bit. I’m curious as well.
How does this 35mm 1.8 S compare to the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 on FTZ? I’m trying to figure out whether to keep my Sigma Art version or jump to the S version.
What did you end up doing? In the same exact situation atm.
@@to8ni I actually ordered both the 35 & 50 1.8 S to compare to both of my Sigma Art 1.4 versions and I ended up returning them after testing them. The Sigma Art lenses are still sharper, can provide more light, and don’t feel cheap like the 1.8 S lens versions.
@@mrbrianwalsh Hmm. I did that with the 50 art 1.4 and nikon 1.8. I feel like the nikon is sharper, has better af. I found a Nikon 35mm 1.8s used for 500 that i will test this week. Will keep this in mind. Thanks.
Incamera lens correction ON i suppose?)
the new lenses for the Z series, I thought they were an 'S' series lens?
The Camera series is Z, the mount is Z but the quality class of the native lenses released so far are S series lenses which are a higher level than possible later lenses designed for a crop camera if one ever is introduced, or slower general purpose lenses that might be released in the future.
what about 35mm 1.4g vs 1.8g ? :)
I can ask you to drop RAW files?
Did anyone else notice the nikon 35mm 1.8 S mount lens isnt a true 35, its closer to a 30mm.....
Anyone tried the tamron 35mm 1.4 yet?
In the real world the Nikon 35 f1.4 is a killer........the z35 has no soul.
The new 35mm 1.8s is wider than older 35mm lens.
I feel like most people wont notice any sharpness differences because most people wont be cropping in that much, and honestly if im stopped down that far i would rather have more blur in my out of focus areas so i think ill be going for the 35 1.8g, as soon as i find one for a good price
