    I strongly recommend this game for solo gamers and those who like card games. It is a wonderful puzzle to solve. I gave it an 8/10 on BGG.
    If you are a D&Der, the one complaint is that the game feels repetitive and light on theme (rounds and rounds of fighting monsters followed by a final round of fighting lots of monsters).

    This was an instant back for me. I picked up 2 copies, one for myself and one for an eventual gift for my brother. Looks very replayable and the 60 minute game time is huge for me. With little kids, it's hard to get stuck into something taking a lot longer.

      well thematically they are drawn to the fire from various original distances to the camp, so they would come one at a time; they might outpace each other but viewed from the camp site there are at most one or 2 "nearest". They are not standing in line, rather it's a radius. At least I don't have a problem with that. Thunderstone also uses this mechanic.
      I do have a lot of other problems with the game though.

    I saw Merchants of Magick, and i liked that game for its easy of how it works, but more tactics on how to combo, but then i saw this as well, and ended up pledging for both, plus expansion.
    We like coops, we like RPGs, and play mostly fantasy stuff, we have had our fair bit of camping ambushes, and if you really want you could do a game of this as one of those encounters, though it would add quite a bit of time, but you can also of course play it on its own, which we will.

    I like the gameplay in this game, and D&D is not usually my thing, but I like the fire theme and how the bad dudes are lined up and you have to piece together your attack options. I'd like to play this solo. The inclusion of 8 sided dice is nice too, more games should use alternative dice. The 'exhausted' mechanic is nice as well.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 лет назад

      Do you have a rules reference for this? When I filmed this and sent it to the publisher they didn't note an issue here and my understanding was the serpents health value is always equal to the fire level no matter where it is. It's possible a rule changed between this prototype and the published version.

      Perhaps you meant Dungeon of Darkness the card game? boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/229909/dungeon-darkness
      In DoD your goal is betting the amount of gold or die. There is no fire to keep track of.
      The Stairs are in a random position, in SaW it's always 8 locations.
      DoD has almost no attrition, you actually gain items that you can use.
      DoD uses a single hero (out of 3, a thief, fighter or wizard), SaW uses always 4 (unless that changes in future).
      DoD has a boss, the dragon, SaW has not, here the fire is just a fire.
      DoD can also do without dice, the 3xd6+1xd20 can be easily simulated by shuffling the cards and painting 1d6 on each. Same for d20. I don't see how to do that practically with SaW.

  • @Kindlesmith70

    35:01 you didn't flip the ability to reroll die, secondly if you kill the cultist, then kill the two undead at the same time would they not go into the graveyard in the order they were defeated and if simultaneous they go into the graveyard in the order you were facing them? That would mean you'd be stuck with the skeletons as the top card in the graveyard.
    There were actually a number of times you defeated a monster and placed it under the previously killed monster. Seems like cheating as the order of the graveyard seems pretty important for certain monsters.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  6 лет назад

      The Cleanse Undead ability states that you can put the creatures into the graveyard in any order you want. It's true that I accidentally put the Skeletons on top here and didn't notice, sorry for adding confusion there.

    • @Kindlesmith70
      @Kindlesmith70 6 лет назад

      Another question, if the skeletons are the last card and on top, does that pretty much signify game over?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  6 лет назад

      Kindlesmith80 You always reshuffle the graveyard when the creature deck is empty, so you'd simply shuffle the rest of the cards and add them after the skeletons.

    • @Kindlesmith70
      @Kindlesmith70 6 лет назад

      The skeletons, would they continually keep going to the front of the line if they are the very last monster in the encounter because when they get killed they keep getting put to the graveyard (not deck)? Infinite respawning skeletons.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  6 лет назад

      Kindlesmith80 You would only have them respawn once. In this scenario you kill them last and they go onto the graveyard. In the next location you draw them into the line from the top of the graveyard and then since you have no creatures in the deck you reshuffle the graveyard and deal out your line. Then odds are very good you will kill the skeletons early since they are at the start of the line, so they will go into the newly empty graveyard before the rest of the creatures you defeat this round which buries the skeletons.
