Even this is for free (and probably can not be put on title again,because it does not pass test and sitting years on junkyard), only the stupid heater core itself is pain to change. Next you need to solve : - timing belt -all fluids including AT -all brakes COMPLETE, calipers,lines -probably rust spots -front glass -starter -for sure some bearings, o-rings... Etc And you still have multicolor car with clear coat peeling...And molded interior as a bonus Its not 850R...its completely basic model.

And considering the list you have made it really doesn’t seem that bad, getting glass, a starter, and fluids doesn’t seem that bad, now I don’t know how much rust it has nor if it’s easy to fix suspension components and brakes, but I suspect it’s not impossible most things appear pretty accessible

Did it today people!!….finally got my 850 fired up again and it felt great!!! 👍…..it’s been stood idle for around 3 to 4 years, I checked the oil and coolant, put some fresh fuel in the tank and connected a brand new battery, unbelievably it fired up first time, no hesitation, coughing or any drama whatsoever!! 😳😳 what’s more, all lights were operative as well and the only lights on the dash were “low screen wash” and “low fuel” unbelievable!!! 😃😃😃👍

Last year I started my 850 for the first time in about 3 years. Unfortunately had to take it to the junkyard however, I never had the time to replace the transmission since I had other cars I was driving.
Great video, I bought a V70 with the same engine and auto box for £150 and it had the same gearbox fault light flashing.. it seemed to be pulling away in second or third. After a fluid flush, it worked perfectly, cleared the fault and it was driven from Scotland to Rome and back.. twice!
Still using my 95’ 850 GLT. Has around the same mileage as this girl here. After swapping the alternator, doing the pcv system swap and putting in a thermostat sensor it’s been running pretty well. Only things now is that on the sport mode after going full throttle transmission light turns on and the sunroof mechanism is gone. To another tens of thousands of miles!
*I come from the future to say we have just started this same Volvo again, after a nuclear winter and it started right up* EVERLASTING CARS! Like Toyotas.
I currently have a 1998 850, in absolutely great condition. Lovely car, I have fixed all the common issues (which was not expensive, because parts for these are dirt cheap at least where I live.) Runs great, has never let me down. Passes inspections like a breeze, never had any major problems with it after I took care of everything. I will try to keep it alive for as long as possible, I don't drive a whole lot so I reckon it should last me quite a considerable amount of time. :)

You need to take it out and cut it open with a hacksaw, resolder them, and glue back together and it should solve the ABS light issue ^~^ ABS light won't pass inspection. The gauge cluster sometimes gets broken solders too, but easy enough to fix. Other than that, the only thing I can think of that often fails other than that is the rubber boots for the front drive axles. Easy to change with one of those openable boot kits. And of course, go over the brakes, change all rubber flex brake lines, all the usual. Give it oil change, filters, everything. They're lovely cars, unfortunately mine was in a accident so it's unfortunately no longer with me, but I honestly want one again!

Back in the 90s, my boss bought one of these for his wife. He would drive it to work occasionally; it was a very nice car. Once this car is cleaned up, it'll make someone a nice driver. Great video!
@@Juoppolalli sure, but here in the Netherlands they used to be from €250. Now its moving to 1500-2000 if you want something half decent. S/V70's are now cheaper than 850s, especially the turbo's.
these are really great cars and the 5 cyl engine is just beautiful, my dad had an 850se. only letdown would probably be the auto gearbox, it failed on my dad's car as well and only reverse worked. heard from others that its a common failure point too. but despite that i think these are still nice cars, would like to own one myself one day
not a common failure- cause is neglect. factory recommended service interval is 20k miles for trans drain and fill and recommend full flush every 100k. that was almost never adhered too by careless owners, and yet most of these cars that are still on the road are at 200k plus miles running strong.
Worth it. My first car was an 850 base model 5 speed. Still daily drive it. In the meantime I bought an 850 turbo, then an 850R. Sold the 850turbo and 850r. Just recently bought an 850 t5r! Great cars. They like to have problems but I have never seen a stock one blow up, or modified one for that matter.
We have had a year model 1997 Volvo v70 10 valve naturally aspirated car since v2006. Very durable and reliable and hardly feels the load. the only minus is high fuel consumption in the city. On the highway, it goes up to 7 liters if you don't press the gas pedal hard. When you change a part, it says Belgium, Sweden or Germany. we also have V.2006 model gas burner Bifuel Vovo v70. Really nice car as well, but I recently changed the water hose of the expansion tank that said made in Poland. It's nothing, but in the older Volvo, all the hoses are original since 1997. A small quality deviation, however. The Volvo lasts a really, really long time and is at its best in winter driving.

Heater core leaking is a common failure on 850s. Same as ABS light, which likely is a cold solder in the ABS control unit. Resoldering is definitely doable, theres lots of people who done it already. Btw, i apologize for nitpicking, but judging by the headlights and the interior switches, it's a 1994 model year. 91-93 had larger headlights. 95-97 had different interior switches. You can check the VIN for verification, the 10th number is the code for model year. N for 92, P for 93, R for 94, S for 95, T for 96 and V for 97. Edit: Just seen the bumpers. Those were 91-93 only, so someone converted either headlights to newer style or bumpers to older style. So might be a 92 after all, especially if these are 4-lug wheel bearings.
Not a rattle from the Hydraulic tappets on start up from 7 years. Worked at a Volvo D back 28 years ago and these 850s used to come in for service with mega miles and running sweet as a nut. 300k I came from a ford dealer and most ford 1.6 CVH engines and 2.0 OHC 4 cly were lucky to see 130k without serious oil conusmption. Volvo 2.5 5Cyl were well made think ford used it in the RS Focus in early days of production
Of course the axle and other things need to be fixed for it to run and pass the registration inspection but it's a solid car overall, I love how the 850's sound, pretty powerful. There's not much left in my country for sale-

3:24 replace the thermostat in the airbox housing. This is the same for all NA 90s Volvos. It regulates a valve between hot air coming from the exhaust manifold and cold air coming from the grille. When this thermostat is broken, the valve is stuck at hot air from the exhaust manifold. A big power difference when the engine is warm. I've experienced Volvo specialists and Volvo dealers forget to replace this simple part. It needs to be replaced every so many years and often it never has been replaced...

Condition is great. Heater core is not really much work like in other cars..make oil flushes from Automatik and power steering... The 850 is really a hard runner...

Just service the filter at the tramission gear ..!
And the pcv. Some owners never service that but a pcv service every few oil changes will keep it leak free for a long time

they changed it in later model years, i think in model year 94 they started with 5 lugs.
That has to be saved, fix the few issues it seems to have and as long as there is no serious corrosion it will make a good car again.
