"Puttin' On the Ritz" is a song written by Irving Berlin. He wrote it in May 1927 and first published it on December 2, 1929. It was registered as an unpublished song on August 24, 1927, and again on July 27, 1928. It was introduced by Harry Richman and chorus in the musical film Puttin' On the Ritz (1930). According to The Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin, this was the first song in the film to be sung by an interracial ensemble. The title derives from the slang expression "to put on the Ritz", meaning to dress very fashionably! This expression was itself inspired by the opulent Ritz Hotel in London! 1983 BABY!

Everything about this is perfect. The song is incredible. His suit is great. The way he moves and the faces he makes. This is literally one of the best musical performances I’ve ever seen.
Those girls had to remember all those steps and still look incredible in those outlandish outfits was awesome. That had to be so uncomfortable but they did it for the show, much respect. Personally, I like the Gene Wilder-Peter Boyle duet in Young Frankenstein better though.
I imagine it would be distracting to be one of the dancers and ask yourself, mid-performance, "after all my years of study and practice, how did I land HERE?"

@@stevehenry1 In America, his record label here had altered the music video of all the blackface scenes using editing effects before MTV there ever even accepted it. It didn’t help that he had so much competition in music at the time. It also didn’t help that almost his whole schtick was basically showtunes. @@tonycanabal1659 actually the tap-synching is pretty bad. He hardly tries.
Watch Fred Astair do the same number, to see how it should be done. This is not bad, though.

If you can read this taco...fine job. This song will never go out of style. Was on maneuvers with the u.s army at mannheim germany when you did this in 1983...thanks for this. Stay well. Great performance.
Appreciate that!
Everything about this is perfect. The song is incredible. His suit is great. The way he moves and the faces he makes. This is literally one of the best musical performances I’ve ever seen.
Heard this song and thought it banged but watching how good of a showman he is just makes it that much better
Omg my favorite song
yes it dise
Those girls had to remember all those steps and still look incredible in those outlandish
outfits was awesome.
That had to be so uncomfortable but they did it for the show, much respect.
Personally, I like the Gene Wilder-Peter Boyle duet in Young Frankenstein better though.
Do not remind me of it...
I imagine it would be distracting to be one of the dancers and ask yourself, mid-performance, "after all my years of study and practice, how did I land HERE?"
Everything about this, even the dancers and the dancing, is very 80's. I'm sure the dancers weren't thinking that.
Dancer here! Honestly those costumes aren't even that different from what we wear in the studio (leotard and tights). Honestly the hats are what I'm focusing on 🤣
I can tell you that they probably spent a couple weeks learning and cleaning those steps!
@@kizarose5083 You didn't dance with hats at all? I'm not a dancer but growing up in the 70-80's I took dance in school and we used hats as props all the time especially in tap.
I watch this time and time again. I love the music AND dance! ❤
This is the ritzyest RITZ rendition. Absolutely the ultimate and classiest of all versions. Definitely awesome. Way to go, Taco and ladies.
Taco has said that the writer told him personally at the time that his record of it was the most exciting rendition of it he ever heard.
I love Taco's showmanship. He's an excellent performer, totally commits. A pleasure to watch!
Was having a bad night with my chronic pain, and i watched this and it immediately lifted me. Taco you are the ultimate inspiration for my career as a drag king. It started when i was little and performed your "singing in the rain" at a school talent show as an 8 year old tap dancer. Sending you love and all the best xx
I wish all possible success mate!
I suffer from chronic pain as well. I had bad scoliosis and had to have surgery. It has left me in constant pain.
Older (as in I remember this on top 40 stations) trans man here; actually also been having a chronic pain day. Was actually gonna be volunteering my Saturday at a local Chinatown event, but chronic pain was all "that's what you think!"

Sending love from another person with Chronic illness 💖. I have Arthritis and my left foot is always swollen I can hardly walk , but one day I'd love to Tap dance.

The man actually did the tap dance portion of the song.
He learned the steps.
You gotta admire the conviction.
Umm... Some people actually know how to tap dance really well so that wouldn't be a very complicated routine for them at all.
@@withgoddess7164 No duh. Taco was a cabaret performer, after all.

Of course he’s got the moves.
I would assume he probably has a history of being a tapdancer lmao.

This man was way ahead of his time, sounds just like modern electronic music
Ahead of his time? Taco or Irving Berlin?
I’d say this is the rich person version of modern electronic music, and fuck it’s so much better. As a massive fan of Dubstep and EDM I must tip my hat to the purest musical definition of “drip”.
Remember when Kelly from Married With Children had to dance as a tap dancer, but ended up ballroom
It’s like the predecessor of lemon demon
This was the 80s, he sounded like a lot of others in the 80s
I vibe to this everyday never gets old I listen to this on my bus and my bike rides hiking and everywhere this is a absolute bop
Какая ностальгия по красивой музыке и прекрасным талантливым исполнителям. Мне было 14 лет в том году, когда во многих программах в СССР показывали этот клип.
It really is something special. Sooo well done choreography. Only Taco could pull it off. A masterpiece.

The 80s funk. The tap dancing. The makeup and costumes. They really set the vibe of this fantastic song, if you read this Taco, you should know that this was a masterpiece and such a great song that I know listen to on loop, it has also become a five nights at Freddy’s song now, if you didn’t know, it’s becoming a part of modern pop culture! I don't know what your point is...
My point is, that this video is from a german tv show and everyone is clapping in rhythm...
Taco is so underrated, he's an amazing, talented musician. Well ahead of his time, that's why people misunderstood him! ❤️🖤
Unfortunately the version that was on youtube had some shots that were considered racist, like the blackface part. That didn't help him in this country
He's like sooooooooo awesome. I've watched this video soooooo many times just today. I started watching this video this morning. This i think is my twentieth time watching. Lol. Idk why but I am stuck on rewatching. Maybe cause I'm an oldies girl. Love rolling stones, eagles, etc. I bet I'll watch over and over again
I can't imaging liking this at all.
@@stevehenry1 In America, his record label here had altered the music video of all the blackface scenes using editing effects before MTV there ever even accepted it. Nobody in America ever even knew about the blackface scenes until about 16 or 17 years later when it was brought up as a factoid when the music video, which was still the American cut, was shown on VH1’s Pop-Up-Video.
It didn’t help that he had so much competition in music at the time. It also didn’t help that almost his whole schtick was basically showtunes. And it also didn’t help that he ultimately chose to stay close to home in Germany. His management at the time tried to get him to live in America to stay internationally successful, but he ultimately felt that the way the music business worked there was very foreign to him as a European, where he was used to mingling and networking on a deeper level.
