    While at Allens' house, ( in his home studio), he asked me if i would like to play his Explorer.
    I remember telling him that i liked the neck. He agreed it had an awesome neck. It was chunky!.
    While i was playing, the end of the headstock simply fell off.
    I was like WTF, and stopped playing.
    He just laughed and said its ok, dont worry , i keep gluing on,but it just keeps falling off. Lol
    That guitar had a very distinct sound.
    Such a great guitar!

    My guitar of the week 40 (silverburst 84 V) got the same separation at the neck/fretboard when I sent it to my old tech for a pickup change, but it is barely noticeable while playing, unlike that explorer that looks a bit more extreme (I put chromed EMGs...I was younger, don't judge me). Apparently this guy's shop flooded and he managed to save the instruments that he was working on, but obviously the humidity got to the guitars anyway (this was like 10 years ago). The guitar finish also got 6 lines of vertical checking. Since then I keep it stored in its case and the separation has become way smaller.

    Paused again at 4:12
    I’d probably put this guitar wrt the “not stored very well “ into a gradual facility where they can introduce humidity gradually and eventually the guitar will accept and acclimate and hopefully go back to normal.
    I know those facilities exist for restoring very old and very valuable furniture and given the guitar is made of wood it should work on it too.
    Where to find such a facility? NFI but we have this thing called the internet these days which may help 😎

  • @robnamowicz8073
    @robnamowicz8073 9 месяцев назад

    With that vibrola, swing the arm toward the rear along the sight line of the knobs and tighten her down. That wang bar system is good for a little casual vibrato, not the swoops and dive of the more modern hardware. Used gently she will stay in tune pretty good. In my opinion the ebony board lends a lot of mass to the guitar, giving the strings more vibratory significance. I like this one, would want one too, Tman!

But if I did it would be in the natural finish like this one. Beautiful guitar and great job on Freebird Trogly especially for someone who hasn't played it a lot I thought you did a great job on it! Keep up the good work and I hope you keep this one!

    • @michaelmoore7975
      @michaelmoore7975 9 месяцев назад +4

      I see where your problem is. You think you need justification before you buy a guitar. Well, get those silly notions out of your head and say to anyone who asks why you bought it, "I don't need to justify anything. I saw it. I wanted it. So I bought it. For no reasons, because even though I don't _need_ another guitar, but I _want_ one regardless, so I bought this. I couldn't live the rest of my life if I had let this one slip by. I'd be up all night thinking what if?"
      And if you're married, get it anyway without asking, justifying, or rationalizing: just get it. And take it home to show her.Because it's far easier to ask forgiveness than asking for permission.

      @michaelmoore7975 thank you! I've done that a few times, i.e. bought a new guitar because I wanted it. Whether it was a nice affordable Squier or a higher end Fender or Gibson or Gretsch. Not married but in a healthy loving relationship,( I'm a lucky guy, my GF is the best!) LOL on much easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission! 😅

    I like the 57 Classics, they came stock in my 2017 SG &. I put them in a 2007 Custom Shop LP Custom I’d traded for & my 2008 LP Classic 1960 Gold top (it had 2 un-covered 500T’s in it) It’s interesting you did not mention the yellow grain filler clearly visible in the finish. I have a 2022 Explorer in Antique Natural & it does NOT have the yellow grain filler. It had originally came with BurstBucker Pros that IMHO sounded like dookie so I put 70’s Tribute pickups in it after falling in love w/them on my Gibson exclusive Olive Drab 70’s V.

    Hi Trogly, figured i'd hop in with my little, vintage vibrola knowledge. The vibrola on this guitar is considered the "short spring" short vibrola. The other one you compared in the video is the "long spring" short vibrola. I believe the later 60s models got the short spring short vibrolas, and earlier 60s guitars got the long spring? Crazyparts offers each style for sale, so you can reference each. I could be wrong, but my late 60s SG MM has the short spring short vibrola from the factory. Not being trying to be a keyboard warrior, just shedding some light. Love all you do. Thanks.

  • @TheJeffcurran
    @TheJeffcurran 9 месяцев назад +1

    I've had 3 GOTWs. Week 1, Week 18, and Week 21. Week 21 was the the SG3 that you showed in this video. The fretboard was really bad. Lots of fret sprout and cracked lacquer. I'm not surprised that this one has a similar problem. I disagree on your assumption about being near a salt water ocean. I live 4 miles from the ocean in southeast Florida. I have two dozen Gibsons. I have no problems with fretboard swelling. So park that concept. It's off base. It was a production problem that extended beyond this particular guitar. That's my daily dose of guitar information for you.

I put a dimarzio super in the bridge and it is a screamer, still my favorite guitar to play, so smooth and the action is tight. Nice to know what the color is called now.

I mean seriously any with half a brain would know that that V’s pick guard didn’t follow or even come close to matching the V wrt aesthetics hehe.

    Louisiana bald cypress is often finished similarly to the wood on this mahogany body giving it the same or a similar yellow hue. If i can get hold of some im going to build a guitar from it but im going to stain it instead of that yellow finish. I can remember back when i was still a teen and my oldest brother let me use his LTD Lawsuit era LP. Id plug into his Fender combo and try my best to perfect the lead to freebird. He woke from a nap since he worked overnight and asked me to turn it down because it sounded as if i was torturing a cat. But isnt that what a blistering lead is supposed to sound like I exclaimed. As far as gibsons go im more used to seeing that reveres Firebird with the non reverse headstock when it comes to Lynard Skynard.

    Trust me dude, you're not the first guy to get their fingers tied up playing that riff & I'm sure you won't be the last lol. Good try though. I love this guitar!

    I love Skynyrd. Freebird is a great song about breaking up with your girlfriend. However, that song should never be played live by anyone other than Skynyrd. May they all rest in peace. They were the best American Band of the 1970s.
