Man, I wanted to pull the trigger on a "Les Paul" a few weeks ago. But the knowledge I gained from watching your videos allowed me to spot a couple tell tell signs that this was a fake. The guy was furious that I pointed them out. At that point, he basically cut off communication with me and pulled the ad for the guitar. Moral of the story..... Know what you're buying!! My knowledge came from you, Sir. So, thank you for keeping me from buying a really nice FAKE Les Paul.

      What were the "tells"?

My partner showed me his friends Les Paul Gibson Custom in a couple of pics two weeks ago and I told him "hey that's fake" and I pointed out that the bridge had flat head screws....no nibs and the headstock was wrong. I don't think he wanted to hear that cause he simply will not talk about at all. He might be pissed at me, but I can't help it I just see the stuff now.

@@RockyH.I've had this happen to me a couple times too. One was at my local shop. He was... less than pleased, should I say. Not sure what he did with it, I'd hope he'd get in touch with who he got it from and file a police report if necessary. He seems an honest guy, I don't think he'd sell it as a gibson knowing it isn't.

Always loved 80's and 90's Les Pauls. My favorite of all the guitars I ever owned was my 80's Gold Top Standard followed by my 90's Studio. Really regret having to sell them when I moved country....

I'm a sucker for Spotlights. I didn't build this one, but my Dad definitely would have done the inspection on it. 99% of everything coming out of the plant went through his hands. He didn't initial all guitars. Only the ones with "exceptional" tops or some other notoriety. I don't think any of the Spotlights were weight relieved. The only model getting that at the time was LP Studios. RL

Hey Trogly, I'm curious what you (or others) use to clean the oxidation & restore Gold guitar parts without the risk of removing the plating. I know it was thicker back in the day, modern guitars the gold seems to be paper thin and come off extremely easily.
I've read stay away from any guitar polish. I've had moderate success with naptha but it doesn't bring back the shine. Thanks!

Congratulations. That's a really good looking LP that has some neat subtle touches such as the binding, headstock facing and Schaller parts. I especially like the wood grain that is interesting without being overly flamed and shouting out "look at me!". The authentic aging and playing wear is cool too.
For some reason it reminds me of the LP Recording models from the same period, without that model's pickups and switches,

I had Tim Shaws on a guitar I had and I agree, the neck PU's were the real star. I could get controlled feedback easily when I held a note, granted it was a 355, but the bridge PU really didn't do it for me. Now you experienced the same thing on an LP so that makes for a pretty good comparison with two different types of guitars.

I'm into retro games and the auction photo made me laugh, there is a company that started to "grade" video games recently, but it's owned by the son of the dude who did the giant coin grading scam of the 80s, and he's also involved in the company with his son. It's done to retro games what happened to guitars. Stuff I could get for cheap 10 years ago, now goes for 10s of thousands. WATA games is the company. A boxed copy of Super Mario going for nearly a million, hell, least with a 50k Gibson from the 50s it was handbuilt, this is more like the pricing of CnC made guitars for 50k and such.
