I recently changed my transaxel fluid, and those drain/fill plugs were such a pain! Took me 2 days of penetrant and some heat to finally break them loose. They are commonly over-tightened and oxidized. 18ft-lbs is the specification i believe, but the ol' Gudentite method is perfect for an easy next change- that man knows his 944s

Just had a similar issue with my 84. I just assumed the whining was a qwerk of the transaxle. A few weeks after the gear oil change the R&P just went while I was starting from a stop. Deciding what to do now. I’m leaning towards finding a reputable shop to rebuild it. Interested to see what happens for you guys.

Had a 944 had a noisy gearbox, changed the torque tube no change, took it to a gear shop they went through the gear box, said nothing wrong they could see inside so had them install a Phantom Grip LSD I had bought for the car, they installed the LSD worked fine, but still had that noise once warmed up, some people recommended using SWEPCO gear lube to calm down then noise, I never attempted the SWEPCO oil deal. Ended up selling the car, then a few years later saw it for sale on Craigslist, with "gearbox problems".... I suspected the input shaft bearing or a carrier bearing had wear while I had it, and the gear shop could not see that wear especially just looking at the bearings as inner race on carrier bearing is not easy to see. Willing to bet that car has a carrier bearing issue, or pinon bearing issue from the sounds of it, if not taken care of you will need a ring and pinion, which I imaging new would not be cheap. I can tell you this, it's an inherent issue with these gear boxes, I think it might have something to do with the torque tube shaft transmitting vibrations through the gearbox, and bearings if it ends up being at pinion bearing. Open the gearbox up and tell us what you find!
