This is Bowie's most iconic song of all time. And the first to be performed from space.

First official music video in space: Space Oddity.
This is why I pay taxes.

Although the original song is pleasant enough, what makes this cover so cool is that it was recorded by an actual Canadian astronaut and filmed in space. So it was visually fascinating to watch, I thought. Shortly before he died, David Bowie overruled his record company guys and gave Chris Hadfield permission for this, which I understand he loved. Great reaction!

Calling the original "pleasant" is like calling Mozart a "decent" composer. The original is a classic and Bowie's singing is haunting and powerful.

@@jonsher7682 a valid criticism. I should have said the original is very cool and eerie.

@@mikeg.4211 Bowie was such versatile and talented phenomenon, both as a musician and personality. And Hatfield, while his is obviously not in that level as a singer, still sings well, and better than some of the crappy current-day singers who are mainly the creations of marketing and studio production.

@@jonsher7682 , you might enjoy this. Here's what Hadfield said about getting to meet David Bowie and what Bowie told him: "He described it as the most poignant version of the song ever done, which just floored me.
I think, for him, he knew he was ill - it was getting to the end of his life. He wrote that song at the beginning, when he was still 19 or 20, before we had even walked on the moon. He had always fantasised about flying in space - Starman, and Mars, and all that other stuff, and I think for him it was just like a gift, to have that song updated with the lyrics, performed actually in space, just a couple of years before he was taken.
To me that might be the best part: that he got delight out of my particular version of the song."

@@mikeg.4211 Thanks Mike. It would have been poignant for Bowie to take flight a song that was nearly grounded before its. After being inspired to write it by by Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey, Bowie had recorded in February, 1969 not for an album but a short movie, Love You Till Tuesday, which was later shelved.
Bowie managed to get it recorded a second time on June 20, 1969, with Elton John’s producer Gus Dudgeon, and the song was released July 11th, just over a week before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon. The BBC played “Space Oddity” during its coverage of their landing.
When Chris recorded it, I imagine Bowie felt a sense of life, his own and the world's, coming full circle.

    Such a cool video.
🤣🤣🤣🤣Charisse : "you need a good amount of space" 🤣🤣
I think he has plenty up there 🤣🤣
Won't give this a score as it is quite iconic for what it is.

Well done, Basil! Just watching a real astronaut singing this classic and seeing him do it in real zero gravity was awesome.

One of my favourite songs by Bowie & after having read Mike G's comment about the context of this cover, I salute both David for overruling his record label & Chris for making this awesome music video in space. Just for that I'll give this one a solid 9.
