  • Paul McCartney has always had a pretty laid-back persona, but the former Beatle has apparently been seething about a nickname he's had for 60 years.

I can understand why he`d hate it. Lennon gets called `the smart one` and Mccartney `the cute one`...while they`re writing songs together. So it makes it sound like Lennon`s the main man. And I think men hate being judged on their looks; they don`t mind the perks, but they don`t like being called `pretty` or cute`. If they`d called him `the handsome one`, he`d have been fine.

I thought it was unfair to the other three to call Ringo the Funny Beatle because all four were known for their wit and all came up with humorous remarks. In their first recording session George Martin told them to him know if there was something they didn't like.George Harrison answered "I don't like your tie."Paul McCartney was asked if the music had a message, his answer was"Buy more Beatle records. When asked about a Stamp Out the Beatles movement in Detroit,John Lennon answered "We have our own movement to stamp out Detroit."

When they met Muhammad Ali, Ali proclaimed to them, “You’re not as dumb as you look”. Without hesitation Lennon shot back, “No, but you are”. True story. You didn’t mess with John.

In a book I read about subliminal advertising years ago, there was a section of the book about subliminal nuclear families and how well known groups of celebrities or characters on tv shows represented each person in the nuclear family. The for Beatles, John was the father, Paul was the mother, George was the craftsman and Ringo was the clown. When listening to their music before the Beatles broke up and launched their solo careers, you really can tell how each member of the Beatles represented each subliminal family archetype mentioned in the book.

Apart from Ringo, the Beatles did not come from humble backgrounds. They were middle class. Paul was son of a jazz band leader and John was from Woolton, the most upmarket suburb of Liverpool. Like most big cities, Liverpool has its richer districts and semi-rich districts.

He seemed to cultivate it though, with the mannerisms, wide-eyed sideward glances, and other seemingly studied facial expressions, the well-known head shaking during the 'ooohs', etc. Even the tongue-in-cheeck references in 'Coming Up' suggest that this was the effect he consciously aimed to achieve once he found out that it 'clicked' with the audience. And why not? 🤷‍♂️

The nicknames came from the same publicity machine that made up the Beatles/Stones rivalry, just looking for story lines.
Paul has always been terrified of not being taken seriously. At this point the man needs therapy. You don’t get to feel insecure about how seriously you’re taken as a musician when you’re the most revered living musician on Earth, which he probably is - I can’t think of a better candidate. Like this whole ‘McCartney-Lennon” crap. Who cares but him and some critics he should be ignoring? What difference would any of this make to the scope of his legacy? “I would think WAY more of Paul if I knew he was the lead writer on that one.” Is he really still in competition with John? Why? When the Beatles split up, John had one really big hit with Imagine and Paul has an extensive successful body of work, in addition to which John’s respect for Paul was enormous. George certainly had more of a reason to be insecure about Paul than Paul does feeling insecure about John. Yes, there are things that John could do that Paul couldn’t, but the reverse is also true. Paul is insecure about John because he’s telling himself, accurately, that John made a better John than Paul does. John was better at being taken seriously by the press, and John’s singing had a quality I’ve never seen anyone achieve to the same extent: John’s vocal believability is beyond that of anyone I’ve ever heard. Listen to “You Can’t Do That” and you can hear the hormones on the vinyl. On the other hand, Paul was a better singer with a better vocal instrument, a better player, and probably the most versatile male vocalist in rock’n’roll - knocking both Yesterday and Back In The USSR out of the park is not something most singers could pull off. John couldn’t have done either. And Paul was a way better player. Paul is a great bassist and one of his biggest admirers as a bassist was John.
Maybe he would have felt better if he was called the Sexy Beatle or the Handsome Beatle. What does he think “cute” meant?
    Enough already.
