  • Another working weekend!
    This meant spending some quality time with the boys and the girls as we got up close and personal in the trim chute.
    Also, trying to beat the rain getting some field work finished, including spreading manure we are way behind on.
    Finally, I remembered to show you our brand new composter.
    A much needed tool, just wish it wasn't...

    I have a basset, healer and mutt mix female dog. She is 14 and I just realized she can herd my goats. Several little ones got out 3 times and she was not chasing them but herding up and down the fence until I noticed and opened the gates. As I am 76 years young, this was a blessing.

    • @keastonz
      @keastonz Год назад +44

      Awh, that's so sweet. We have a basset/coonhound mix, and she absolutely loves to chase anything. She's still fairly young and very energetic, so she doesn't really have it down quite yet. But she's especially having a good time "herding" the leaves now that they are starting to fall 🤣. And don't even get me started with the Amazon delivery guy 😂... Poor guy.

      Do you think your healer mix learned from watching you heard your goats? That is a blessing for sure. I’m 73 and the only place I’m fast is running in my dreams. Lol.

    • @roguewolf7053
      @roguewolf7053 Год назад +14

      That’s amazing. In my experience heelers have a very strong herding instinct. You just have to watch them closely when herding as they can become too forceful leading to them breaking the skin when nipping at the legs of the animals they’re herding. Which is bc historically they were bred/developed to herd cattle which can require more persuasion at times ti move any direction that isn’t their idea. But otherwise many heelers, much like border collies, can learn to herd with very little actually training but by just watching the actions & patterns of moving livestock by their owners. Which can be a massive help to any farmer!
      But I’ve personally had multiple breeds of dogs not bred to be herders as well as multiple mutts of unknown breeds which I rescued help with herding various animals. So while certain breeds have the natural drive to *want* to herd *something*… I’ve found that almost any dog has the potentially to recognize what you are trying to accomplish & then try to help you. This seems especially true if animals escape outside their enclosures into anywhere they are never allowed. Growing up we had a commercial chicken farm & I had several dogs which helped us to corral & herd chickens which escaped due to an animal digging into the chicken houses. Which bc each chicken house/barn held 15 to 20 thousand chickens…when a few found a hole to go through it typically resulted in dozens or even hundreds of chickens escaping. I can remember it taking hours to catch all of the escaped chickens & put them back in the chicken house! And how immensely helpful it was if one or more of our dogs helped to gather up the chickens & then it was *especially* helpful if the dog or dogs would help KEEP the chickens gathered in one area.

    There's actually something really comforting about the idea of a composter. It's been said that nothing ever disappears, it just changes from one form to another. Everything has it's time and it's season. Being able to return the sheep back to the earth is a beautiful thing.

    Kinsey might not be ready for “One Man and his Dog” level of herding, but she does know her job and does it with flair! What’s always most important with any dog is that they are “fit for purpose” - they work as needed under the conditions they see every day, and don’t stress the livestock. Well done, Kinsey!

      Not the same, but your comment made me laugh. Yesterday I was using that spray foam stuff to fill in some gaps in my shed. I knew, absolutely knew, I should've worn some latex gloves. Thought nah, I'm not touching the stuff, just spraying. It didn't go where I wanted it to and instinctively grabbed a handful to move it. That stuff is so so sticky and does not come off easily at all. I was sitting outside with my single clean fingertip-ring finger, trying to get on my phone to see what would remove this from my hands. Wondering how I was going to open the door without getting it all over the knob. Alcohol helped(rubbing kind), and a washcloth. Still got bits in my nails on cracks of my hands. Always wear gloves when using that stuff.

    Hey Sandi, the endless cycle of sheep care continues. Your a champ at it as always. You show care and respect to each of your flock. Kinsi has become a reliable partner in the process.
    Copper sulfate is good for footrot. As well as a mixture of apple cider vinegar (40%), tea tree oil (5%) and fill with water. Spray on their feet to prevent or treat fungal infection of any kind. Also works as a first aid spray for infection. I've used it for years on my various animals.

    I actually may have some useful advice for you, Sandi! When our livestock develop hoof rot or *thrush* in the hooves, we always wash out the hoof with warm, soapy water and squeeze some Thrush Buster on it, and then use the vet wrap to keep debris and more bacteria and/or yeast from hindering the healing process. It can cure it in as little as 2 days, depending on the progression of the disease. Me and everyone at the ranch swear by it, and I did Google whether it's safe for sheep - Google said it is commonly used, along with goats, cattle, horses, etc.
    Let me know if you can't find it and I'll, personally, send it to your PO Box for you to try out.

    For foot rot I use Tea tree oil one ounce in 10 to 15 ounces of Braggs Apple cider vinegar and fill spray bottle the rest of the way with water. Shake and spray liberally. Can be sprayed as preventative or to cure. I apply two to three times but rarely takes more than once! I trimmed our horses for 13 years and now dairy goats for over a decade. I also use this spray mixture for rain rot, ring worm, virtually any fungal or bacterial infection. Works very fast! 👀😄

      SPRAY BOTTLES ARE CHEAP, LIVES ARE NOT: You never know who is going to get into your shed so do what the corporations do: It's always good to permanently mark your bottles as poisonous (if necessary and with the poison control number), the recipe of ingredients inside, and what it's used for. The smell of the apple cider vinegar should put off any cats as I've seen people recommend it to stop them from scratching up furniture, but the tea tree oil in that concentration may be toxic for cats and dogs.

    Funny story...back in the day (guy I knew) a hired (fairly large) employee of a manure company was opening a correl gate. Not sure if he knew under the barbwire gate and a large poo puddle was a sheet if ice. Needless to to say he fell and looked like a beached whale thrashing around, until the loader came to lift him out cause he could not stand up. It truly was not nice to think it was funny. But everythime I think about it I almost have an accident from giggling. Hope you have giggle to.🤣

    I bet you could chuck in a bucket or two from the Bobcat, to the new composting unit, and it would do the same job as other starter materials. The output from that machine could be incredible on your home vegetable patch, or flowers, or crops as well. We have a much smaller garden composting area that gets our kitchen waste, egg cartons, grass trimmings, and is about to get a big helping of fall leaves. The compost it makes naturally, gets used for our veggie garden and landscaping as well, and has outperformed any bagged compost we used to purchase. While losing any livestock is sad, this unit can actually return goodness back into your soil, as it simply contains and speeds up natural processes.

    THANK YOU ABOUT THE COMPOSTER!! I am one of those who asked about what you do to the deceased lambs. Another viewer told me they were "composted". I just thought they were "tossed" or buried in a manure pile. Obviously, very bad imagery as to what I thought you did. So glad I was wrong! Yes, I would love a Composter Tutorial to fully understand how it works because that compost at the end of the machine looks like something I wouldn't mind putting on my flowers or garden--although, I'm not sure if I should. And the tutorial would tell me if it's as good as I think it is or if it's good, but with reservations on how to use it. That blood on your hands, Sandi, is not what we typically see in your videos! Ouch!! You truly show all the highs and lows of being a farmer and I'm grateful to know where my food comes from and how difficult it can be to get it onto my dinner plate. Gosh, I really hope breathing in manure dust doesn't get you sick by the end of a week! I used to live outside a crop farming town and the main road drove through the middle of at least 5 miles or more of fields to get into town for High School and later for employment. You KNEW when they were spreading manure. Ugh, Bleurgh!! The smell! IT BURNS US!!! LOL Most urbanites have NO idea! Not even old city sewers smell that bad!

    Species manure being separated actually makes perfect sense to me. We alternated cow and horse for our little 15×35 organic garden. Our veggies grew like crazy! 3/4 of our veggies were either given away family or neighbors or even given to our neighbors sheep. Neighbor loved it be cause our neighbor paid WAY less in feed. Country life! Lol
