I wanted to share a story with you. Some years ago, I was dating a woman who was Catholic. I am an atheist, but I attended mass with her a few times and found it interesting. I later took her to a Sunday service at my childhood Episcopal church, so she could see what I had grown up with.
The priest gave a sermon about how Jesus made himself very unpopular by criticizing those in power. She was talking about Matthew 23, and Luke 11:37, I believe. According to these gospels, Jesus had been invited to a meal with the Pharisees, and rather than fawn over them, he laid into them (far more harshly than this bishop to Trump, I'll add).
I remember sitting in my pew, listening to this sermon, and thinking "Wow, that's really admirable. We'd be better off if more people took that example to heart."
From my non-believer perspective, this Bishop could really be said to be Christ-like.

I think a lot of Christians think Atheists oppose everything Jesus supposedly stood for. We don't. We agree with the humanitarian aspects,we just don't buy the supernatural stuff.
But what really grinds my gears is the people like Trump who claim the Christian title, but have none of the Christian behaviors.

Many marginalized members of society refrain from identifying as Christians or attending church because they feel unwelcome. This sense of exclusion is exacerbated by the rhetoric of figures like Donald Trump, which deepens feelings of fear and despair. Yet, Jesus himself proclaimed, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” The Good News is meant to be a message of hope and inclusion, and no one should ever feel turned away from it.

Firstly, I would like to say I'm not all that bothered about american politics, apart from that I'd rather Trump didn’t impose tariffs on Britain, and Musk wouldn't interfere with British politcs. But mostly I don't really have a dog in this fight.
But I will say I didn’t like this sermon very much. A few reasons why:
-This was a sermon which would be seen by many people. It's the perfect opportunity to present the gospel message to as many people as possible. While moral stuff like mercy and working together is important, this feels like a massive wasted opportunity.
-Preaching politics from the pulpit will put people off from christianity for those who take the opposite political view. I'm not saying that the bible doesn’t have party political implications, I am saying the preaching publicly about it is unwise, and the bigger the venue, the more unwise it is.
-The comment about LBGT issues were tremedously misplaced. While it is of course important to be merciful to LGBT people as much as mercy is important to everyone; *in this venue* it will be taken as an endorsement to perform sinful acts (especially in the way the media will clip it). These kind of comments need strong caveats at the best of times, and it was definitely inappropriate for this setting.

She didn’t preach politics she preached mercy to the stranger which is the Gospel. It’s sad people are equating that with politics. As Christ is to us we should be merciful to the marginal, the stranger, and those not like us. That’s not politics that’s basic teaching of Jesus. She said no more than that.

Come on, it's pretty obvious her "final plea" was intended to be partisan stabs at the Trump administration.
You can preach mercy to the stranger without focusing on party political talking points.
But also, it's not the Gospel. Mercy to the stranger is important of course.
But the Gospel is that God the Word came down to earth as Jesus to die for our sins. He died on a cross and rose from the dead on the third day.
That's the Gospel. That's what she had the opportunity to say to millions of people, but passed up on that opportunity.
Mercy to the stranger is important, but it's not as important as that.

Yes, we were the stranger and God showed us mercy.
That is a good way of framing the gospel.
But that's not what she did.
Talking about how God showed mercy to us is part of the gospel.
Talking about how we should show mercy is not (while important).
She did the latter, not the former. If she did the former I would be much happier.

Okay, but you can't expect us not to notice that there is a 100% overlap between the people she is concerned about and who are scared and oppressed, and people that the Democrat party favors as their voting clients. What are the chances that the people that a political party appeal to as their base, and the people she recognizes as vulnerable and in need of consideration are completely the same?
If someone pointed out to her that there are many Americans who feel alienated in their communities, are watching their social cohesion disappear, are seeing their wages suppressed, seeing drug use and crime and violence increasing well, scared of the direction society is going...those aren't people who are scared and vulnerable they are just people having a hard time adjusting to changing times.
So what this actually looks like is what I think it really is: a bald, partisan, political stunt unbecoming a Christian leader which sullied the authority of the office of president for what is likely personal aggrandizement.

What a ridiculous comment. First of all undocumented workers do not vote in elections, so your overall claim is just a lie.
Secondly, it isn't her who's putting a target on those people's backs -- that would be Trump and his vengeful zeal to go scorched earth on this very specific subset of the disadvantaged in American society. None of the draconian policies she is talking about will do anything but cause more division, more fear, and do nothing to address crime and violence. They are stunts intended to placate the radical right wing base of the MAGA Republican party, of which you seem to be a contented member. Do you really believe Trump will do anything to help with the rampant drug epidemic in rural America? He's already broken his promises to cut food prices and bring the price of gas down below $2 -- which his Saudi buddies will not allow him to do anyway.
You don't want cohesion and understanding, you want all liberals to be brought under Trump's heel and subjugated out of existence. Did you join in that salute with to Elon?

@MybridWonderful someone would only disagree with you if they smoke crack? Leftists are often like whitewashed tombs outwardly appearing to be moral paragons but inwardly closed minded fundamentalists. I would take a moment and consider that people can disagree with you for good reasons, even if you think they are wrong. If that sounds crazy to you, then I would recommend you get out more and expose yourself to people you would normally avoid so you can get a sense for how they live and think. Or go on thinking that everyone who isn't just like you is mentally deficient or evil, I'm sure that will work out well for you.

@paradisecityX0 Based on your comment, God is making mistakes all the time.
People are born with all kinds of problems....Downs Syndrome, Hermaphrodite, brain damage...
And God causes more abortions than all abortion doctors combined! For that's what a miscarriage or still birth is : a divine abortion.
And how about God's mistakes like natural disasters?
      And have you studied Gnosticism?
What you describe doesn't seem to match any of the corpus I've read.
Granted, there's a lot of different groups that get thrown under the same umbrella of "gnosticism." So it's hard to put down an exact list of what they believed.... especially since they didn't call themselves gnostic.
