As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

Great video Zak. I would love to see a future video from you on dog body language, things to look out for (stress signals, displacement behavior, etc), and tips to de-escalate a tense situation between dogs. I think it would be really helpful for many people and I would love to hear what you have to say on those topics. Cheers!

Agreed. While it's nice to see it done perfectly, but not all dogs are friendly enough, and bad situations do occur. Helpful to know what to do if it does go wrong than just how to lower the likelihood of it going wrong.

Thank you for your reply. Exchange for her favourite treat, cheese, works but a favourite toy doesn't. We do all sorts of goofy stuff to engage her to play but that doesn't work. The cheese treat does but she doesn't seem to be stopping doing it no matter how many times we do it. Yes, keeping things she guards out of her way is good advice and we do try but the odd occasion we forget and we put it where she can jump high enough to get it. This happens with scarves and woolly hats. Normally we can get fairly close to her when she is guarding before she will growl but if she is feeling hacked off with us for some reason she will growl if we just look at her when she is guarding. Otherwise she is a perfect little dog and we love her to bits, just not so much when she is guarding. Thank you very much. xx

I'll be welcoming a gorgeous Dalmatian puppy into my life in a few weeks. It's very sudden (I was on the waiting list for the next litter, but a few people pulled back their interest so I jumped in!) but I'm quite excited! Hey Zak! I just got a 2 month old puppy a week ago and I don't think you mentioned what would be a suitable age to introduce your puppy to other dogs. Of course once they have their booster shot and properly vaccinated but would 5 months like Sawyer be the ideal age?

Also forgot to mention that I don't know anyone with a dog so I would have to wait till he could go to day care or out in public with me. I mostly keep him indoors and in our big yard for him to get his energy out, but he is great with strangers he loves everyone he meets!

I took my dog to a doggie daycare for a play day when she was 6 months old, but when I went to pick her up they said that she had a meltdown and was growling and snapping at the other dogs and hid in the corner and started howling/yelping really loud when they went to put her leash on, and I didn't understand that because my dog is largely considered one of the friendliest possible dogs, she's a year and a half now and still wiggles with excitement at everyone she meets, have never seen any type of this behavior even for a second and I have spent ALOT of time with her. Literally the friendliest possible that a dog can be, not just with me but with everyone else she meets, so I still have no idea what happened that day, but I don't trust leaving her with someone that isn't family any more. :( I wish I had a better experience with doggie daycare, I'm just too nervous to trust one after what happened with my dog.

Our male standard poodle puppy and our standard female adult poodle love to play and chase around the back yard! Problem is they get to wrestling and semi aggressive rough house that is hard to stop. The puppy loves it but I’m concerned if I should limit it, will he find it acceptable to be rough with other dogs? How rough is too rough? The book has been a huge help.

Google doesn't find anything I want to find, so I'll post here in this video. So far Zak is my favorite trainer and I would love to know what he would do in the situation that I'm at.
I have a 7 month old labrador, she's very sweet and plays very well with a lot of their dog-friends without any problems, but there are a few 'unsupervised' dogs at the park that bite her from time to time, and try to bite her pretty often, almost every day or two. When that happens I calm the situation, I call her to come with me and the other dog stops, but because their owners don't teach them properly I feel that it's scalating and sometimes they come from really far away unleashed just to bark at her in a very threatening way (not just "normal" nervous barking)
Today my puppy was very happy, playing with a dog and looking for attention from the other owners when one of this dogs came just to bit her with no warning. So I need to know how should I behave to make this dogs understand that that territory doesn't belong to them, because their owners don't give a crap.
Talking to a lot of owners with good dogs, they explain to me that their dogs have very bizarre traumas that started in situations like this, so I need to put a stop because it's getting worse.
What should my behaviour be towards this unknown dogs? I don't care about if their owners feel it's unnapropiate, I just want to know what's effective and humaine towards the dog so they understand that they cannot get close to my puppy.
I wanna say again that this dogs are "unknown", so I have no relation with them. That's why I couldn't find any video online about a situation like this.
    Thanks a lot.

Zak, could you do a tutorial on Resource Guarding. Our mini poodle of 13 months and 2 weeks has started to guard ran dome items. Our hats, scary and gloves are very valuable to her and she growls quite nasty if we push to get it off her. She will also run in with leaves she shouldn't have. We got the book by Jean Donaldson calked Mine. We are putting some of her advice in to practice but some of it doesn't apply. I would really like to know how you would approach this subject. Thanks very much Zak. xxxx.

You've already got the best advice available with Jean's book.
Her advice is basically the exchange approach. It works.
I put any items the dog guards, away. Never engage in a game of tug with items you don't want destroyed (don't try and take your favourite shoe off your dog).
Get a favourite toy out instead and enage the dog, she'll drop whatever is in her mouth and come to play.

She appears to be treating our Yorkie like one of her puppies. Hovering directly over her, moving her around with her nose and paws, licking her ALL over. Is this normal? i have an almost eight month old german shepherd cross female who ive had to dog socialize in dog parks for the most part. i know that dog parks aren't a great tool for socialization and manners and she's developed some nasty manners and habits. when she plays with the other dogs she can get aggressive, she's ended up pinning another dog about her age and getting near that with another. at this point i've stopped taking her to the dog park because of this. she is always in the other dogs faces and annoying them like barking at them and stuff and i really want to fix this. do you think doggy day care would help teach her better socializing skills and teach her better behaviour?

I can't get my dog trained as he is not really into food. We had to beg for him to eat his meals. I have tried like every other dish to feed him with but he is just into it.. so it's kinda difficult for him to teach with treats.. Is there any other way I can teach him..???

Nidhi Chauhan try your dog with proper food, like we eat. Chicken, beef, lamb, filleted fish plus vegetables like carrots, broccoli green beans etc.. For a very good treat any dog can't resist try cheese. Dogs really love it. If your dog is not eating as he or she should, maybe it's because he or she is feeling nauseous. Get a vet to check your dog out. Good luck. xx
