This is our second Big Bud on the farm and has been working the fields since 1981. After many thousand hours the original Cummins engine had low compression and was starting to fail. Rust was replacing paint and the cab interior showed it's age. After deciding to do a rebuilt we came across a 1984 Versatile 1150 with an excellent engine but bad transmission. After looking into our options we decided this would be the perfect power plant for our Big Bud. This project took over 3 months, between 3 guys, and the result were more than we hoped for. I hope you sit back and enjoy a glimpse of what it took to make this beast live again.
The time-lapse was done using Gopro Hero 3 cameras and a self built slide for the sweeping effect. Needs a little work but overall it made for a spectacular high speed view.

Tractor Specs:
1978 Series 2 KT450 Big Bud
47,000lbs dry weight
1150 ci Cummins KTA-1150
525hp
Eaton Fuller 14613 transmission
Fantastic 10/10. Need to get myself a sliding rig like that for time lapses.
+Awesome Earthmovers Appreciate it! It was pretty simple and cheap, might have cost $25 plus a long piece of angle iron. I didn't know how it would turn out but I wanted to try. The sled wasnt as smooth as I had hoped so next time I want to use wheels from roller blades. I'll put up a video showing how it works and where to buy the parts.
I am very impressed with the expertise of your crew doing the rebuild and of your camera work.
+B Hurley thank you! We try to do our best when we can :)
You guys did one hell of a job at restoring that tractor
Thanks!
Beautiful work. Good to see that the old beast is still a workhorse and not a damn show pony.
Thank you!
I love how the engines mount on a sled in the Big Bud tractors.
Makes maintenance and engine swaps much easier.
I haven't farmed since I was a youngster, so my knowledge base is limited, but from my perspevtive, I'd say you fellas have pretty much figured out how to remain a sustainable operation in today's extremely challenging world of farming. It seems to me that you've invested wisely in a first rate repair shop and in learning skills which allow you to avoid some of the massive equipment and repair/maintenence costs that sometimes bankrupt others. Good on you for figuring it out and for sharing on YT how you do things so others might also benefit. Building great maintenence/technician skills often is the difference between loss and profit. "Knowing how" also positions you to keep the older stuff going so you dont have to buy new equipment which is burdened with so many computer driven modules that frequently fail, and which aren't servicable by anyone other than factory techs. Keep up the great work and God bless!
I am Like 1780 - We Farming-Simulation Friends from Germany love the Big Bud
Those tractors seem to be really well designed for ease of servicing. The engine skid looks slick. And I love seeing old equipment kept alive!
I've been following you guys for some time, this is still one of the best videos ever. Anxiously awaiting the Series 3 completion.
Thats brilliant that the engine and transmission comes out on a skid.
I cannot stop watching your restoration videos. They are that good. Thank you for showing what you do to the RUclips public.
im always impressed by your restorations, camera work, and the land you guys have.
Well done Welker Farms! I've been watching a lot of your videos. I am sincerely impressed with your operation and how well your family works together! You have my respect. This rebuild takes the cake....I truly appreciate all the farm families of America and the countless hours spent getting it done! Keep up the great vids and thanks for the peek at how you do it in Montana.
Thank you guys! Its unbelievable to see these huge machines. In Germany farming looks a liitle bit smaller😂 and i am from Gernany and it`s soooo amazing to see such big farming machines
Lawzy days am I ever exhausted watching you guys. You never cease to amaze me with your videos. Thank ya much....
+tarfoot thanks for watching! And know this, we can be pretty lazy too and love to relax like everyone!
Absolutely incredible. I’m just blown away by the production value here. This is just spectacular. Thank you for taking the time to document this process
I love your videos, they inspire me to do the same thing with tractor restoration some day. My grandfather owns 10
tractors and a little over half
are in (bad looks) shape. This video and the rest of the restoration projects inspire me do the same so that some day all of the tractors looks as if they just came off the assembly line when they were brand new. Keep up the good work!
Walker farms have by far, hands down THE best utube channel .
Keep up the great work..
Woah! Too Kool! The engine in big bud just slides right out on its own subframe. How handy is that!
Sure looks good now, nice job guys!
You and your family did an amazing job. Thanks for letting us see how you Welkers get things done on the farm
+King Red Leg you bet! Thanks!
Wow!! Another great video!! The effort and skill put into restoring these tractors is second only to the effort put into capturing it on film! You guys do great work!!
Cheers from Saskatchewan!
Thank you!
That's an AMAZING work you do here ! The restoration and the video ! I like the sweeping effect, very good Job !
Congratulation from France !
+MrDonomi thanks for watching! Yes the sliding camera turned out much nicer than I thought it would!
It is amazing to see you bring that Big Bud back to it’s former glory wow what a machine.
I have only seen one or two of those monsters in Michigan probably hooked to a tile plow
I am Farmer from Germany and WOW! There is erverything PERFEKT in this Video. Big Bud should be alive, you saved one soule. I hope i can visit you in the Future to See a Big Bud, becouse in germany we dont have such nice Traktors.....
Love You
Love Your work
Welker Farms is my favorite farming channel. They have inspired me so much. Thank you Welkers!
Thank you for enjoying what we do!
Quite the transformation, and such a beautiful tractor. I've never seen one in person, but I can only imagine how imposing it must be when it drives by you. I had never even heard of the Big Bud beasts until I saw it in my farming simulator game. Thanks for posting this video.
+Jeffrey Hendricks you bet!
this is workmanship at its best what a job done on her
+christopher traves Thank you
Giants Software (company behind Farming Simulator series) tweeted and facebooked this video. Hopefully you'll get a bunch of viewers because of it :D
I see that! Very cool! I guess it is a win win, we get views and they get more Big Bud attention for their next patch. Still very cool.
Love these time lapses can't wait for the versatile so restoration
You and me both!
Love the sled idea for the engine and trans. A bit like a tank setup. 👍
Outstanding as always!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Wishing you and all family and crew the very best this year ,keep safe and farm on. American farmers ROCK!!!!
+6.5 Creedy thanks Creedy!
I could watch this over and over again. Great work as always.
Good job, I love seeing anything old brought back to life I'm more of a car and truck kind of guy but this is great to keep this up.
+Legendary ZACH4 Thank you, I guess in the end they all burn fuel and make sweet sounds haha.
Welker Farms Inc yea, I just really like seeing anything old being brought back and i love watching people work magic to make it be able to happen ha ha, I also like how you guys respond to every comment keep that up, so do u guys work them all the time or what.
+Legendary ZACH4 it gets overwhelming at times as I feel I'm on my phone 24/7 but I enjoy responding and reading everyone's thoughts. We do work on them all the time. Mainly normal maintenance but recently we've been doing major overhauls to the whole tractor as they were much needed.
I’m so happy to see another Big Bud get restored!
What an awesome tractor, beautiful restoration, good luck in the future.
So much work! You guys are so talented to get all that done yourselves. Such a beautiful machine
So Big Bud for ever ? Will never be too old ?
+sorry sonnenschein As long as they get the job done we'll keep running them! Great machines.
It's families like yours that puts food on my table. Thank you for the efforts and sacrifices your families have made for us.
Awesome video! Nice to see these beasts restored and looking like they rolled into the farm off the dealer lot! Very fine work with all the TL and the panning TL!
Thank you! They are as close to new as they have been since well...they were new! Yes the TL turned out very well, a few little bumps and jitters but overall the panning TL adds a new dimension.
Awesome video and Tractor ! Welker Farms Inc. never disappoints. Not only are these people big time farmers, they are are Master fabricators !!!!!
Leg Arm is amazing! True genius without and engineering degree...
i love how slick the engine and trans slid out of it, someone was thinking when those old girls were built
+Matt They made these machine's so the average farmer could do most of the repairs himself. Not wanting down time in the field Big Buds idea was to have a special truck that would pull up to the broken Bud in a field and pull the sled out with engine and transmission and just slide a whole new one back in and have the tractor running in just a few hours. A job that today would take weeks if not months with today's tractors. This wasn't their motto but it sure fits, "keep it it simple stupid".
I was John Deere was made that way. Lol 😂 , Nick and Robert do you remember when the Stromstad’s came and visited
The Weller farm does an awesome job refurbishing that old equipment. Great time lapse Nick.
Thank you!
Amazing video! Good work boys, keep her going for another couple thousand hours. The country looks amazing where you are too!
+Bryce Kilian thank you! She should last forever if we put the repairs in when needed :)
These are really high quality videos. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Very good video, great work!
Thank you!
great video. I like the attention to old iron and how you have refurbished another machine to last another part of a generation.
+Mark Raihl thanks Mark! We hope to run them for many many more years
Man, that was some EXCELLENT work. He looks brand new again.
You and your crewmen absolutely ROCK!!!!! Another awesome build.
Thanks!
o my god, I think it's one of the few videos where I really enjoyed myself so much, I did not have it at the beginning because I thought it was one of the usual clickbait videos ...
damn that time I did not open it before 🙃
congratulations for this video show !!! 😃😃😃
Just found your channel. Super impressed with the big bud tractors. Impressive operation
Wow what a mint job you did on the handrail for the steps, work of art!!
Thank you!
Well done on restoring Big Bud he really needed that. Don't forget about his little brother. 1100 HP & 500 HP But is he the biggest farm tractor in the world? I do love it when you first see it rolling out the garage. 👍👍👍👍
+Breaking Baz thank you! Yes it isn't as powerful as the 747 but at 525 it'll handle everything we throw at it!
I guess you think that this is the legendary 747. BUT IT'S NOT! It's a 525. There were more Big Bud models not just the 747 and the 450. Please learn something (and not from Farming Simulator)...
Dang that is amazing, I would love to visit your shop sometime.
You got a new tractor, very beautiful timelaps picture/video and I love your drone shots. Thank you for sharing your amazing video
+Carsten Andersen thanks for watching!
You guys do some top shelf work. Excellent job. Really enjoyed that.
+Mark Robinson thanks for watching!
its crazy that the big bud only had an eaton truck trans in it!!! that blew my mind
It is amazing to think it is strong enough but it sure is, have only had 1 fail in all our years running.
Such a cool vid! GREAT soundtrack for this one too!
Killing it with the videos!!! Looking forward to the next project! Farming season came quick!!!!
Thank you! Hope to keep good stuff coming, might be awhile for the next one!
Awesome even in fast pace you can still tell the detail that went into it. Great job on the tractor and the editing.
+farmall8 thanks for watching!
its so nice to see a older tractor restored and put back into the feilds not becoming a trailer queen
this is truly the USA at its best! love your vids!
Thanks!
With those big engines it has to be incredibly satisfying to drive and be able to feel the power they have in the fields.
Was that a 16V 747 you put that engine back into?
+Owen Games It is pretty invigorating feeling it snort when under load. There are more powerful machines out there but in agriculture these are near the top.
+Owen Games I wish! Though I don't think it would fit haha. We put the same style engine back in, 1150 ci kta 6 cylinder tuned to 525hp
There's only ONE 747 built :D
Amazing to watch! Great to see a giant go back in the field.
+Stan Hensley thanks! I'm driving her as I respond to these comments haha.
Fantastic camera work
Now that is one massive tractor!
Your time lapse rebuilds are awesome,i love how you guys work and am amazed at shop layout.Best wishes for an amazing 2017 for Welker Farms, stay safe guys.
+Truckbuildercarl thank you! So far we're off to a great start of 2017. Be safe on the road!
Was the Versitile beyond repair. Great video love the music.
It had a cratered transmission and parts can no longer be found. We do plan on figuring out a way to make her work again though, next video!
Can you not use a regular 13 speed like the buds?
Nice job with the Big Bud.
Outstanding Video !
+Mike Youngblood Thank you
Awesome restoration!! Anytime you guys need an extra hand, I’d love to come out for a week and give you guys a hand. That would be a dream of a lifetime!!!! Great job fellas
I love this video and never get tired of watching it. I love the work you do and the effort you put into it. Keep it up ☺
Thank you!
Glad to see you getting your work done we just go ice fishing instead!
Nice big Bud! In the Netherlands we don’t have that big tractors😔i hope to see a big Bud in real life👍🏻
It would be hard to seed 10 acres of land with a big bud😂 Go to Germany of Poland their they have big tractors.
Greetings from another Dutchman
Great Video. I love seeing these amazing machines working and coming to life.
Thanks!
Great respect for people who take pride in their work!
Thank you!
How many hours are they? The result is really extremely beautiful. Greetings from Bavaria
Chiemgauer Agrarvideos c
Chiemgauer Agrarvideos dein eng ist genial xD....wie viele Stunden sind sie xxD
We lost track years ago but likely over 10,000 hrs each:)
I was sad to see the Versatile die but that was a beautiful restoration
That versatile is beautiful. I love the look of them.
top notch job fellas! from the tractor to the vid. yall nailed it. thanks for sharing.
+Maryland Mike glad you enjoyed it!
its very nice Traktor
+Patrick . Gaming Thank you! It drives really really nice.
i want one. i don't know what i'd do with it, but i want one.
+dylan morrison You would be set for a zombie apocalypse!
that was coooooool you guys work fast. that was one heck of a rebuild. the begining of your videos is great.
+Howard Younger thank you!
The vast open space of our great country. Those behemoths look like a lawn tractors for how much land they need to cover. Just amazing what our nation produces.
Will you ever put that versatile back to the fields?
Totally not the 75th time watching.... lol I honestly don't remember how many times I come back to these videos when Im bored.
AJ you're awesome :D
Only a 13 year old still in school lol
it appears you guys are BIG BUD fans...I personally would have put a new transmission in the 1150, but I'm a Versatile fan...either way FANTASTIC video...love seeing big equipment on big farms..wish I were there
+Jeff Gardner how'd you know?! Lol yes we are. The 1150 is a sweet machine though and we have plans to giver her live again in a year or two with a newer powershift transmission. Plan is to make her into a grain cart rig.
Nick I got my desktop picture. What a great shot from your drone with the Sweetgrass hills in the background. The shot at 7:29 and 7:34 are awesome!
+Todd Buhmiller very cool! Feel free to do that, it was a shame because I had to leave shortly after filming that and right then the sun lit up the hills. Still love seeing those hills and buds together.
get this video to 1million views.
Done
@@trevorrowe6231 yep
What all did you do with the versatile tractor
Still have it sitting in the back and it may very well have a new owner this year.
Unreal this gets better every time I see this. Job well done and family that does a nice job for sure.
Thanks!
great video! I love seeing the old Big Bud's in action
Thanks for watching!
This is awesome. Hopefully the old versatile doesn't hit the pasture.
+Ross Black sure didn't! She'll see life again and with some sweet upgrades, just might take a year or two.
Maybe it would be nice to have a day counter in the video...you chnged it from KT450 to KT525, nice...
It’s actually KTA-525, the “a” for aftercooled.
You guys lead an interesting life. Just looking at the work you guys put in I understand I would be about dead after the first day, assuming I even made it to the end of the day. Just amazing.
It does seem like a lot of work but after every day I am amazed how good I feel. It is work but because it is something we enjoy so much it goes by fast. We also get down time too so there is time to re-coop.
During your downtime may I suggest you read a book called "Shopcraft as soulcraft., an inquiry into the value of work"? I think you will enjoy the perspectives of the author even though he comes from a very different background.
great video, it's great to see your style of farming compared to our Irish ways, loved the video
What ever happened to that Versatile? Was it trash other than the motor? I know they are sought after too. Cool stuff, always fun to see farming in different parts of the country. MT looks like a different planet than down here in South GA. Keep up the quality videos!
+ellerbeeweston we still have it sitting out back. We got a few interested in it as is but haven't sold it yet. We really would like to fix it up and use it but we just don't really have a need. The tractor itself is in good shape for the transmission is toast so it would need a new transmission and engine
Oh thats sad news for me i LOVE the Versatile but i understand why you did it. 👍🏻
Serposh the transmision was death as wel
The is a possibility that they will do a restoration later but I'm not sure
A restoration on the Versatile
Attention to every detail, that's how its done! Great job all!
Good job walker farms for restoring them old girls.
