    As a father of a 17 year old girl Scuba Diver I appreciate you and Sara made this video. We have been training her over the years so she can do her DM and IDC at 18, but no training in the world is going to prepare her for the sexism she already encounters as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Once again thank you.

      There are so many amazing women and men in the community that will certainly look out for her. But, I think it's a discussion that we should have to spotlight the issues and create healthy boundaries for the young people growing up in a world where we are allowed to call this stuff out :)

    I was 43 years old when i took OWD , my diving instructor was a woman more than half my age, 21 years old, always respected her and followed her instructions, i didn't care as all that she could be my daughter, but saw certain male individuals that abused of their position and age, some even with very respectable profissions, and that's really unconfortable, if i didn't like i can't even imagine her.

    Love this video! Been following you both for a while and know that any diver would be lucky to benefit from your knowledge , experience and passion.
    I’ve been trying to get my sister and female friends into diving and know that the community needs educators and influencers like the two of you!l for all of the women (and men) who may be hesitant about getting into diving.

    I am a man and in a completely different diving world. I was an female instructor for my OWD in 1993. That went on from there. The majority of my guided dives abroad and locally were led by women. . In my local diving club there are more women than male instructors. I have to say that I'm from Switzerland and have mostly attended courses and excursions in diving centres run by Germans. But there are also a lot of women elsewhere in Europe and among the customers too. Women are often in the majority when it comes to diving. I personally know many more women divers than men. You could almost say it's a women's sport. At least at a local level.
    I'm going on a diving holiday in Spain and have just had a look at the diving centre. 1/3 of the team are women. The others on this island are the same - 1/3 to 1/2 women.

    I hate hearing diving described as a "boys club", but Sarah is correct. I'm happy to dive with anyone male or female provided they are safe and competent.
    I do follow Sarah on RUclips and just followed Ocean's account. But I really do wish some people could learn to have some class with regards to how they carry themselves and speak to people.

    One of the best dive shop experiences I've had was 'Dive with Harmony' out of Maui
    We went on a dive boat to depth and while ascending she donated air to me. (Because I was poor with gas usage.)
    It was on my way back from the boat did I learn from Harmony that women are naturally better at gas management than men.
    I appreciate your and Azul Unlimited's channel. You both have a different (oftentimes better) view of the sport I love.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for opening up this conversation!
    When I trained for my DiveMaster, my instructor ended up giving me less point on the evaluation for my « customers skills and presentation » part. When I asked for feedback, he said that my 👻 🐝 were “too much on display and that it would be problematic for newlyweds (idk if the algorithm will flag the word so just in case) . I am not flat chested, I cannot do anything about it, I wear the most compressing sport bra I can find… and it made me feel so bad for so long. It’s been 8 years but I still feel weird when I go from my oversized t shirt to my suit because of that guy

    I agree that this is an important topic and won't tolerate disrespectful behavior toward anyone. However, after viewing the entire Divetalk video, it didn't appear that Woody intended to make you feel uncomfortable or was coming on to you in any way. If you were offended, you should have said so immediately. Was that really the best example available of male misogyny in diving? Calling Woody out publicly, after the fact, over his innocuous attempt at humor is disingenuous and counterproductive to your argument. 😢

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  4 месяца назад +1

      It's just an example how normalised these types of comments are. As I explained in the video, I didn't think much of it at the time, but reading the comments I saw how many people and men were calling him out, Gus also called him out, just shows how used to I've gotten to these 'harmless' comments but without commenting on them, it creates a space that's not necessarily safe for other women :) thanks for taking the time to join the discussion. 🤿

      I'm 67 male and dive ( but do not and will never instruct) and watch both your videos and Dive Talk, I think Woody is a gentleman and would be mortified if he thought that his comments were inappropriate. He was very complimentary in all respects.
      The comments are a different kettle of fish.
      Personally having had both male and female instructors, in general I would prefer a female instructor as they are less likely to want to exert their alpha male mentality.
      I have been lucky that some of the male instructors have been cool, laid back and exhibit no alpha male behaviour.
      I would love to dive with anyone male or female as long as they leave their ego and sexism at home !

    Disappointing, how many women don't consider diving or quit after taking the open water course because of such attitudes? All this revenue lost to the dive industry because 1/2 of their clientele does not feel safe or respected. It's not all about money of course, but without widening their potential customer base, the business of diving stagnates or even shrinks. Reason why until things change, organizations like Girls that Scuba are actually a service to the industry.

  • @MikeDodds

    I agree 100% that this type of behavior absolutely must change as soon as possible however it will take participation from everyone involved, both men and women. You are absolutely correct in your statement that this type of interaction has become normalized. There are some complete pigs out there that we can call out all day and they will likely never change however I believe that there are also a lot of men that are acclimated to this current normalization of sexist behavior and if it were brought to their attention they would be mortified. The thing is, both men and women need to address this when it happens and not weeks later on a RUclips video without the participation of everyone involved. Maybe before you posted this it would have been a good idea to reach out to Woody and Gus? They very well might have surprised you with their reaction and response…. I’m also curious about this, was Sarah on board with calling out Gus and Woody like this? In summary I can say that I’m disappointed that you felt uncomfortable in retrospect but I’m also disappointed that you seem to have employed what can arguably be described as potentially canceling ambush tactics to bring up your feelings.

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  3 месяца назад

      I told Sarah that the video was the catalyst for my thoughts about this topic coming up, but I asked her to share her personal experiences. As mentioned in the video and all the comments, this isn't about cancelling anyone. It's about saying no to normalising something I have accepted for so many years. As a teacher of young people, I want to be part of a future where girls don't have to experience what I have and where boys call each other out.

      It happens everywhere and is mostly considered ' normal '. I only made this video because so many people online called out the video with Dive Talk, and it made me wonder, why did it not bother me? Was I so desensitized? I'd hate for young girls to be in that position :)

      Fully submerged touched on the toxicity and I agree. I'm a new diver obsessed with this newfound hobby, and I have been disappointed a lot by the people within it and the industry itself.
      Its very fragmented with people who are scratching it off their bucketlist and will never dive again and on the other end incredibly arrogant “elitist” type people who come off as condescending. I would like to see more in between.
      Also would like to add as a minority, I have received some stupid comments as well as there is not enough diversity.
      Above all I have enjoyed it enough that I want to keep diving and I hope more people get into the sport through channels like yours and others who share what we experience.

    This isn't a dive industry issue; its bigger; its a society issue and it will take decades for that to change; but for the most part it is slowly changing. Maybe it’s my neurodivergence that inhibits me from seeing it differently, but Woody doubled down, and kept saying it… it def was done in a non professional way too, if he saw a similar video with a guy I bet he’d have a different tone of voice and gestures… I definitely felt like Gus did and I’m glad he called woody out right away too.
      Also; saying it was a joke doesn’t mean something isn’t wrong to say, that’s peer pressure from someone who doesn’t want to consider they are hurting others or perpetuating harmful beliefs. My grandfather refused to stop saying racial slurs and it was so embarrassing, even when we tried to teach him otherwise… Don’t be like that. You can always learn and adapt. There are also far funnier things than derogatory or abusive statements.

    Our social dive club has a rather big gender imbalance. Our whole committee team is men! Recently we've attracted some younger people, but we haven't been able to attract women to take leadership roles. I've only been part of the committee a few months, and so far I haven't seen any negative behaviours, but the committee is mostly much older guys, so it is very possible that at the very least we have an image issue. They are a bit "old school", so I do expect some resistance to any major changes, but Im happy to take the initiative to improve. The few experienced diver women in the club are too busy as instructors outside of the club, or with other projects. Any suggestions on where to start?
    I'd love to see our club evolve into a more progressive and welcoming place. We already are succeeding with attracting people from overseas, and even lgbt folks, but for some reason we are absolutely failing with attracting women!
    Great video!

    I've been diving for 10 + years and can confidently say I have never seen this on a dive boat. I have my own community of divers I tend to travel with so am sort of in a bubble to be fair. I have done many dives in Hawaii, Cozumel, Jamaica, and Seattle. Dive masters have been about a 50-50 split male to female for me, and the boat captains have always treated everyone the same. Also, in that @DIVETALK clip you showed right at the beginning, you failed to mention that Gus was calling Woody out constantly when his comments approached a line, and Woody was carefully clarifying his intended meaning the whole time. Harassment and discrimination are not ok anywhere. As far as my experience goes, I see it far far less in the dive community than I do in my every day life. I'm sorry your experiences have been so different.

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  4 месяца назад

      That's amazing that you surround yourself with divers with the right attitude 😊🤿 As a diving instructor, I wasn't able to pick who I would dive with and unfortunately some people did say inappropriate things. I was 18-23 though and never really gave it a second thought. Even when I first reacted to dive talks video, I laughed at Woody's comments because I am so used to them. But when I read the comments and people were calling him out (Gus was also calling him out) it just made me take a pause and think this is a bigger issue I have also taken part in normalising. So just wanted to have the discussion, thrilled to hear that it does not happen everywhere 🌊🐟

    Keep divin' ladies. Good part is, SCUBA is changing. Went on a trip last year. Female divemaster ; more women on our boat than men; and I hope that continues. There is no reason everyone shouldn't (or couldn't) enjoy the wonderful journeys under water. And if men were actually thinking about it, you'd think they would want more women in diving right??? But Sarah hit the nail on the head - people just need to be a little more cognizant about their own personal filter. As a man I can only try to imagine what you go through on a daily basis. It blows my mind that so many people out there think this kind of behaviour is acceptable. I've never met either of you but I feel for you, and really hope this changes over time. People are people, and there's no reason to assume somebody will struggle just because of their appearance.
    Thanks so much for talking about this. I'm not a diver, and I'm not female, so I can't understand the true scope of this; what I can do is pledge to call out any sexism as/when I see it, regardless of who is perpetrating it. It's truly unacceptable and people need to be told that they're crossing a line otherwise they will continue to do it.
    Stay strong, your videos are some of the best diving videos out there. Thank you for making this video. Thought provoking and really important. The last 5 diving classes I've taken, two were taught by my female instructor, three were taught by three different male instructors. All four instructors have been awesome. All 4 instructors specialized in different things, that was the only reason I chose them, nothing to do with any other factors. I have not noticed any bad behavior towards anyone for gender, race, or anything else but I will keep an eye out for it. I will say: things have changed a lot in the last 20 years, I do see more diverse backgrounds in diving, but we have a long way to go. Was just thinking of a comment a couple years ago I heard on a boat I was not okay with, homophobic unfortunately.

      That's so good to hear! Even when I started diving in 2008 and now there are way more women and diversity in diving. It's cool to see different opinions. I found many female students struggled with male instructors because they didn't know their center of buoyancy is different, questions about periods etc. we need all the different people teaching to teach the range of students!

    My very first dive was with a female dive master. It never entered my mind that I would be any less safe because of her gender. I had an incident on this Discovery Dive (my fault) and she was a rockstar. She handled it so well I was able to continue the dive and encouraged me to continue my training.
    Until this video i never even thought about what female divers have to contend with. I imagine it is worse if you are in a position of authority. Some guys are just douchbags. My OW instructor was a female and she was awesome. I had no problems trusting my life in her hands. She was very, professional, knowledgeable, could handle the tanks and equipment much better than myself, and more importantly she was very patient; as I had some fears I had to work through.
    I follow both your channels and really enjoy your content. Keep it up and please post more tutorials. I am always looking to improve my skills. You both have given me great tips and present the info so well.

      Thank you so much for your kind words! People like you are why I gained confidence in teaching diving and continued in this amazing career. We just wanted to bring up some of the negative incidences so we can all work together to make diving feel safer for people who may not be vocal about standing up for themselves!

    While I do believe Woody wasn't degrading you on purpose, I am a firm believer in the reality of others feelings. Their feelings are their reality. He did cross a line. At one time I worked for a company that distributed custom and high performance auto parts. There were two women in sales whose knowledge way over shadowed mine. Men customers would literally call and say, "Can I talk to one of the guys?" If they only knew!

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes! That phone call comment would truly annoy me as it was almost daily!! I don't think Woody did anything malicious, but I think him and Gus kickstarted a conversation in the comments about off hand remarks and standing up for women, and calling men out. His reaction to my video in the end of the day is a tiny tiny fraction of my dive experience, but since we're on platforms, think it's useful to use these moments to open conservations

    When I did my OWD, my instructor was a girl, when she putted her wetsuit one, I just loked away even if she wear a bikini, by the way some man are shy too, because some believe you aren't a man if your ... is shorter then 10inc. I don't know why we just wanted to dive together to have fun etc.
    I guess very same topic if you got a young instructor, hey age doesn't tell anything about experiance or anything. I met 2016/2017 two girls both 28/29 they where so childish like they were 9. So I don't care about age anymore.

      @@OceanPancake There are definitely a lot more women going into the field now (at least getting the bachelor degrees), but the very top is still mostly all men. My mentor is one of the only women who is super high up (she's in her 70s and has multiple Nat Geo documentaries about her and her contribution to the field), but even she has had to restart 3 or 4 different PhDs because her supervisors over the years have been men who keep saying they'll only pass her if she sleeps with them. Her last time was in her 60s that she got all of the work done, and her supervisor was some highly revered old dude who yet again gate kept and said she'd have to do a special favor for him if she wanted to get her PhD finally.

    Our club has three dive instructors who happen to be female. I don't know how some folks feel that gender has anything to do with the capability or ability to love the oceans. I agree though, the sexism is apparent in the dive industry. Take care. -Mike

      In many areas, there are now many more female than male dive instructors, and they're doing amazing work. Okay being not strong enought, whats bad about this, there is always someone who would help. There are even men who struggle with two tanks. Secoundly what I really don't like is what they Count as sexist this days, sometimes we man just tell you look good in a wetsuit, because we mean it. I guess the problem is not what we say it's how we say.
    You may remember the man who Kissed the spanish soccer player?
    I don't want to tell it's okay to kiss a girl, without asking. But I guess if he had told: I was just overwhelmed with joy as we won the world championship.
    Then it would had been (maybe) much different.
    But as a man I would please the girls not to blame everthing as sexist, for some boys it's already very difficult, sometimes we man just tell something without thinking enought, but not because we want to hurt.
    I went sometimes to a Policewomen to tell her she looks good, because they get insulted so often and all saw it as a compliment, so again it's how it was said not the word itself.
    But this is just me.

    The divetalk guys make this same type of joke frequently. I subscribed to them back when they only had about 15k followers and have watched almost every one of their videos. I was about to hit the unsubscribe button after watching their video, but then I saw the response and it kind of tempered my view of the situation. I plan to unsubscribe not just because of this one incident, but because it has been a string of sexist comments from them.

      That's the thing, it's been so normalised even I laughed it off and yes, in the grand scheme of things it's not a horrible thing. I have no ill will towards Woody at all. I am a high school teacher and teach young girls, and I frequently try and teach them about boundaries and what's acceptable. It felt hypocritical to not discuss it. Its a tiny tiny snippet of the greater picture of the thousands of comments I've received as a diving instructor. Thank you for looking at it with a critical eye 🐳🦈
