Same here, it really hurt when I couldn't catch it...it was also my first time running into a shiny that wasn't a gyarados lol. Tbh I think back and get all emotional.
My first shiny was a Zubat from the grass patch just south of violet city where you first find Mareeps in G/S/C. Before Sun & Moon came out I replayed all the previous games in the months building up to their release. While replaying Heartgold I found another shiny Zubat in that exact patch of grass while looking for a Mareep. Both must have been 15 years apart. I got a little emotional as the gen 2 Zubat had long been saved over multiple times by now. It honestly felt like it came back to me once I had a way of holding onto him and transferring him up the Gens.
The first Shiny I ever found was a Weepinbell in Gold ... my parents refused to let me take my Gameboy to school, so none of the other kids would believe me that it was differently coloured because the official art for it made it yellow anyways. My next Shiny was Tentacool in Sapphire, still have him. I attempted my first Nuzlocke in LeafGreen and bumped into a Shiny Diglett as my Nuzlocke encounter for Diglett Tunnel. Named him Mirage and still have him. And then. Sapphire. Heracross. Safari Zone. Threw one ball and it fled... That one was soul crushing...

Funny how when I got my first shiny, I didn't even know it was shiny but I still caught it. It was when I evolved it and it was a much different color than it usually was, I didn't know about shinies at that point but I just treasured it. Btw, it was a shiny ferroseed in pokemon white.

Same mine was a full odd bidoof and it was at the time I didn't know what a shiny was and I didn't saw the shiny animation because I was distracted but when I looked at it carefully I noticed it was a slightly different color of a regular bidoof so I caught it
Years ago I was playing Black 2 trying to just catch the Dreamyard Latios... when one reset it appeared shiny. I caught it, then while saving my dis shut itself off and my game data corrupted
The first shiny I ever encountered was a shiny Floatzel in Pokémon Diamond in 4th grade. I had no idea what shiny Pokémon were, so I asked my friends about it. My friends decided to tell me it was Darkrai disguised as a different colored Floatzel. I believed them because I thought Darkrai was so cool (I still do) and I wanted Darkrai, so I tried to catch it. But I didn’t have enough Pokéballs so I ended up knocking it out and I remember crying about it as a kid.
That Zubat story goes really well with the story of my first shiny. It was Zubat. It was the second one I ever ran into. Since I had caught the first Zubat, I nearly didn't catch the shiny one. I just assumed that Zubat must come in different colors since I didn't know enough about Pokemon to know otherwise (I had also not seen enough Zubat to know otherwise). I did end up catching it though because it sparkled, whereas the first one didn't, which indicated to me that the green one must be special (and boy was it). I started with Diamond. I wouldn't learn what shiny Pokemon are until about two or three years later, after I had failed a shiny Starly in Platinum's Safari Zone and fished up a shiny Chinchou in SoulSilver. The shiny Chinchou is finally what got to me look up what the deal was with these sparkly Pokemon. Also, yes, I am aware of how crazy my random shiny luck was and still is.
I didn’t get my first shiny until Pokémon Moon where I got a full odds shiny Nosepass during my first play through of the game. I have been playing Pokémon since gold and silver came out. I also want to add that I got two full odds shiny in Pokémon Shield during my first play through of that, but when I tried to Masuda Method a shiny Chewtle, I hatched over 1,000 eggs before I gave up.
My first shiny was crabby in Fire red. I was fishing in Pallet Town and he just popped up. It was so nostalgic to get both my first Pokemon and my first shiny in the same town.
Alright, here I go, I encountered a shiny tentacool in leafgreen as a child but didn’t know what it was so I ran from it, in the same game I found a shiny geodude that I actually tried to catch but it exploded on me. When I got into middle school I played a bunch of emulators on my phone and there was one normal game of fire red I found a shiny pidgey before I got pokeballs. I’ve since become a shiny hunter and have 3 fails, one was a chimecho in the safari zone that ran, I reset over shiny cyndaquil in SS and I killed a shiny beedrill in the bug catching contest with a crit. I think that’s all of them. I’m still a stickler for full odds tho
I taught a neighborhood kid about pokemon about ten years ago. He LOVED shinies. Two of his first full odds shinies where Gravelers that used self-detruct. Another was a Ponyta that he crit killed. He.....took it really well actually. Awesome kid. Don't see him much anymore but I've heard he's doing pretty well.
I remember playing classic gold, and in the course of a single session, I managed to find and catch a shiny koffing, and a shiny Zubat. This was probably 15 years ago, so I don't know how it happened, but I lost both of them. I do know that I didn't save, and either my battery died, or the cartridge jostled enough to unplug, but both those shinys as well as all the story progress i made in that session was gone.
I will never forget my first shiny. I was playing Pokémon Diamond and I was heading through Route 17 to get to Candace. My team was extremely weak from going through the route. Two of them were fainted, one was frozen, and two of them were in red health. My Infernape was up front since it had the most health. I then ran across a Sneasel but this Sneasal was not the normal red and black but pink and yellow. I freaked out knowing I just ran across my first shiny. I tried to catch it at full health but it wasn't working and I only had a handful of ultra balls, one great ball, and four poke'balls. I had to weaken it but Infernape only had strong moves against it. Now, this Sneasel is three levels higher than my Infernape and my Infernape knew Rock Smash then. Rock Smash was only 20 power then. I had faced a Sneasel the same level as the shiny before and I knew that rock smash brought it to yellow health. So I went for it and Infernape...freaking..critical hit the Sneasel with Rock Smash and OHKO'd it. I was so pissed. Mad enough that I saved the game at the pokecenter and released Infernape before restarting the game and getting him back. I have been shiny hunting Sneasel for years now off and on and want it back and have yet to get it. Second shiny was Lickitung that I came across in SoulSilver and I still have it and is in my Shield version. Third shiny was Torchic in Emerald. This is the first shiny hunt I did with restarting the game until I got him. I still have him and he's been transferred to Shield. Fourth shiny was full odds while playing Pokemon White. It was a Meinfoo that I ran into while progressing through the game. I unfortunately don't have it anymore. I wanted to play a Nuzlocke of Gen 5 and I had two copies of Pokemon White and I deleted the file that had the shiny Meinfoo on it. Next one was Treecko in Alpha Sapphire that I restarted until I got it. I still have him on that Alpha Sapphire. Shiny Lugia that I also restarted with on Omega Ruby and is now in my Shield version. Full odds shiny Zoroa in Shield with the DLC when it came out. Zoroa popped up on the beach and I was completing the poke'dex to get my shiny charm and it ended up being shiny. The next shiny happened hours after I got Zoroa. I finished the poke'dex by then and had my shiny charm. I was continuing the story for the DLC when I ran into a Golduck in the cave by accident and it turned out to be shiny. I got two shinies in one day. I have never been that lucky. The latest shiny I got was from a trade with a friend. He caught a shiny Eevee in Pokemon Go and had transferred it to his Sword version but he doesn't really like shiny Eevee and I traded it for a Shield exclusive Pokemon. I have not yet decided which Eevee evolution to turn it into yet. I have also gotten several shinies from Surprise Trade/Wonder Trade but I often release them or retrade them since they're hacked mons.
My Shiny Fails include a crit vs a Shiny Metapod at +6 Def and a Shiny Quagsire running away. But by far the worst happened during the Bug Catching Contest in Gold, where I encountered a Shiny Weedle. It poisoned my Croconaw and killed it before I could catch it. Got my Shiny Nidoqueen though, wich I absolutely adore.

My most heart breaking shiny fail was a male nidoran in firered. I found him in the safari zone and I already loved taking a nidoking through Kanto but a blue one would have been awesome but it ran away after a few failed balls and to this day I spend extra time in the safari zone looking for one
The first shiny I remember finding was a shiny Magcargo in Pokemon Platinum. It was in the mountain where Heatran is and Buck accompanies you. Ran into it, saw the sparkles and was like, “What is this???” so I killed Buck’s Claydol and the Weezing accompanying the Magcargo, and went to try to lower its HP. That day, I learned that rock-type pokemon do not resist rock-type attacks. I used Rock Slide, thinking it would be neutral damage but it was super effective and killed the shiny. At the time, I didn’t know how rare those were so I spent the next hour trying to find it again, and after that I thought I had imagined it. To this day, I still have never found another shiny Magcargo.
I lost my shiny roggenrola by resetting my game.(It was my first ever shiny mon) And a gen4 shiny cacturne in the same area you found graveler and killed it. Like John's video if you have lost a shiny and if not just do it anyway!
My first and only fail (not including Raid shinies in Swsh) was ponyta in LGP, but in the fan made pokemon solar slight and lunar dark I failed a shiny by selecting a supereffictive move and the second I clicked it I realised it was shiny, not the best stories I know
The only shiny fail i've ever had was in let's go coming of cerulean cave there was a random shiny rattata and it disapeared mere inches from touching it. But I did come from hunting snorlaxes and getting two so it wasn't awful.
I had caught a shiny Nidorina in my first play through of Pokemon Gold back when it came out. First shiny I ever caught (not counting the red Gyarados) and I loved it because of the colors. My younger brother ended up deleting my save file with that Nidorina and I never had another shiny Pokemon again until I hatched a shiny Staryu in Pokemon X.
I had no shiny love back in the day... This past May I got a switch, along with let's go Pikachu, shield, brilliant diamond, and Legends Arceus... Started playing let's go, got a few hours in and a brown Rattata ran out of a patch of grass... Easy catch. A week later, started Shield... Literally my first encounter after getting poke balls on the first route was a shiny Rookadee... Still have that shiny Corviknight... Arceus has been a playground, giving me (without actively hunting) 20 different shinies... And last week in brilliant diamond was Pokedex hunting in the great underground and found and caught a shiny bibarel... This week also got a shiny Machoke and Weedle on let's go... And then a shiny Geodude memes me with selfdestruct... And I, a nearly 50 year old gamer, nearly cried...
I've failed 4 shiny, I killed a shiny pokeRadar Natu, already found 5 and just kept chaining and forgot it was shiny when I attacked. 2 Radar Beldums, takedown and low catch rate = sadness. And 1 Horde Geodude, magnitude
I have only failed two shinies so far. And I remember both vividly. The first was on Pokémon X. The second Pokémon game I have ever owned. One day, I decided that I wanted a shiny Gulpin. So I went to route 5 (I think) and started horde hunting, getting Gulpin, Scraggy, and some rare Minun and Plusle. At one point, days later, I was in the car with my parents and was still hunting. I looked up from my game to talk to my parents, and forgot if I had run from my last horde. So, after the game ran through some camera angles, I clicked run. Only to catch a glimpse of a Shiny Gulpin in the front just before running away. I caught two shiny Scraggy before finally reclaiming it. The second one was much more recent. I was horde hunting for Oddish in Pokémon Omega Ruby (my first ever Pokémon game) for a Shinylocke play through of Alpha Sapphire. And this time, I found a shiny Roselia. I noticed it, but as I was knocking out the non-shinies, I got too excited and killed the shiny by accident. This one didn’t hurt much though. I already had a shiny Roserade and if I catch a shiny, I like it to be the first evolutionary form. So if it was a Budew, then I would’ve been mad.
I have never failed a shiny but I’m not proud of it, I’m terrified because that means that one of them in the future will be my first failed shiny and it will eat away at me for my entire life
So something unbelieving happened in my HG NUZLOCKE! So I got to Team Rocket's hideout in Mahogany, and the first Electrode I got was a Shiny one, I could not believe it. I replaced the Voltorb I had previously got, which coinedently had the same nature, ability, and level as the Shiny Electrode I got, it was just evolved. Also It didn't know Self-Destruct which was nice.
My first legit shiny was an audino in the Ultra Moon wormhole. I was just watching the MML and looked down at my screen and saw a purple audino. My second made me gasp. I was just doing a lets go Pikachu playthrough and just as I was entering the room with the key to the 7th gym, there it was. A pink Magmar. Keep in mind that I didn't have the shiny charm, I had no catch combo and even if I did it wasn't high enough to raise my odds, and I had no lure. Put that on top of the fact that Magmar is the rare encounter for the mansion. I just shoved a golden razzberry in its mouth and chucked an Ultra Ball at its face. I found it a while ago and I'm still amazed I actually found it. My first fail though was a shiny Altaria in the Ultra Moon wormhole. I love it and Swablu's shiny, so I really wanted one. I finally found it and I was worrying about it having brave bird. now I know that it doesn't, but I found out too late that it knew Perish Song. It broke free of all of my Pokeballs and it fainted.
My first shiny fail was in Ultra Sun... I was grinding some Pokémon to level 100 by chaining Chansey through S.O.S., and I came across a shiny Chansey! I was so happy!!!! So I went to catch it... and I had no poke balls... Another one was in an ultra wormhole, I was soft resetting for shiny Heatran and I was stupid enough to TURN MY DS UPSIDE DOWN, so I hit the wrong move and knocked it out. And finally, shiny poipole. I got shiny poipole by soft resetting in front of the gift poipole, and I accidentally SRed when I found it. But I didn’t give up with shiny hunting, and my first shiny Pokémon from a hunt was a rolycoly in about 300 encounters.
My first ever shiny Pokémon I ran into was a Shiny Graveler in Platinum as well! At the time I’d never heard of shiny Pokémon before. While I was climbing up to the top of Coronet to deal with Cyress and the end of the world I ran into one just on the second floor where the boarded up cave entrance was. I ran into it and was like: Why is Graveler Brown? He’s always grey I’m confused. In my mind I thought he was a glitched Pokémon and thought “huh, interesting. Ima catch it and ask my friends at school tomorrow about why Graveler was brown.” It was like 28-32 can’t remember exactly but it was in that level range since the next floor of Coronet near the boarded cave entrance everything was around those levels. I went back to school the next day and asked my friend why tf my Graveler was brown and she said: Her: oh! You found a shiny Pokémon! Me: wtf is a shiny Pokémon? Her: *explains the basic definition of one to me* Me: oh shit really that’s pretty neat. (I was in middle school when at the time when I found the shiny) That was my first shiny Pokémon ever and only shiny I ever found from Platinum. I was never interested in shiny hunting until now at the age of 22. What terrifies me (I’m sure you know this but) is that past me didn’t remember that Explosion/Self Destruct was a thing the Geodude line could learn….thinking about its move set rn. It was in the level range to have known Self Destruct. I can’t remember if I damaged it or if I just hucked Ultra Balls at it or even how many it took. But just knowing how extremely lucky I was to have caught a Shiny Like that makes me simultaneously anxious and proud I managed to do that. I personally haven’t failed catching shinys…yet….hopefully that trend continues. My second ever shiny was an easy Zangoose in Pokémon Black. He was a less stressful catch. I found him in a double battle encounter in the dark grass when I was looking for I think a rare Bisharp encounter and that one I was super shocked and aware. I transferred him up thankfully. Sadly I don’t have that Graveler anymore because I caught him far before black and white came out so I couldn’t transfer him :(. But to this day I’ll never forget my first Shiny.
My first shiny fail was in Virtual console Crystal. I had just gotten my starter, and walked out of the lab. First encounter in the grass was an uncatchable Shiny Pidgey. No Pokeballs, no Pidgey.
My first shiny ever was a shiny Whismur in emerald, in the cave to save Lil Peeko, and I used a weak tackle with a weaker Pokémon.. and sure enough. I got a crit, o'ko. I was.. devastated. I feel that pain that a critical hit can cause. Always at the worst times and never at the best times.
I Lost full odds shiny graveler in pokemon alpha sapphire. To make things worse I got a crit catch in a dusk ball in a cave. My first shiny found in that game
First shiny I ever caught was a Poliwhirl in Silver when I was a kid. Caught a shiny Meowth shortly after but then I had a long drought in finding a shiny. It wasn't until Diamond and it was a Cascoon. Didn't catch it because I ran out of Pokeballs. Last shiny I have found was a Foretress in ORAS and I did catch it.
My first shiny was in Gen 2 headbutting trees and found a pink buttrerfree. I wasn't able to catch it for some reason whether I killed it or didn't have balls. I fixed my problem and headbutted again and eventually found another one. I then proceeded to get a game shark and cloned and turned it into other Pokémon.
I caught full odds pichu in the trophy garden, wooper in the safari zone and ponyta in the tall grass but I deleted the save file and forgot to trade them over to heartgold.
Thats awesome John I also got my first shiny in platinum! I was playing at 1am trying to catch Azelf, failed it 2 times went for a third and it turned out shiny. After an hour of trying to catch it finally got it in a quick ball lmao
I remember my first (and only) shiny fail. I was playing Moon doing SOS for shiny Bounsweet. And I must've been distracted because it popped up and I didn't realize it was shiny. I was in the zone and I knocked it out without a second thought. I realized that it the shiny the moment it fainted in front of my eyes. I freaked out thinking I was seeing things, but I checked my pokedex and Bounsweet was indeed seen shiny. What makes things worse is that this shiny Bounsweet was my second ever shiny

When I was in 10th grade I was playing Fire Red while waiting for Drama practice after school. In Rock Tunnel or one of the caves a black Zubat popped up. I didn't even know shinies were a concept or possibility so I just thought, 'that's weird. I should catch this.' So I did. Immediately after that, I ran into a yellow Geodude. At this point I thought something was wrong with my game or my screen, but just in case, I wanted to catch this one, too. I went into my bag but I'd used my last Pokéballs on the Zubat 😭 I didn't wanna kill this possibly one-of-a-kind Geodude so I ran away. Foolishly, I returned to the cave later with Pokéballs hoping I would find it again but alas 😞 I told one of my friends who was more well-versed in Pokémon about what happened and he told me about shinies and just how rare it was to find one, let alone two in a row! I will always remember that Geodude. And I hope one day I can find my copy of Fire Red to see my shiny Crobat again
My first shiny (excluding Gyarados) was a Gastly. I killed it, and as it fell, I noticed it’s blue coloration. It was in OG Pearl. Gonna hunt it again in Shining Pearl. Gotta redeem myself
Watching this 9 months later and just had to put that gen 4 was also when I "got" my first shiny. I was on my way to mr.pokemon's house in heartgold had just got the game. Last patch of grass before getting there a pokemon encounter. The sparkles go off and boom a shiny caterpie, golden like the game I was playing, just shiny there taunting me. With no pokeballs yet because you get those fron lyra after the catching tutorial I had to run away. I spend hours, days trying to get that to re appear but no it is gone and will forever be in my heart.
Idk if this counts but when I was kid I played Pokémon white and countinuously restarted after the catching toturial and juniper, I think caught a few shiny patrats, the gray goblins
If you've been a shiny hunter long enough there's a good chance you've lost one to a self KO-ing move. My first ever shiny fail wasn't until Generation 7 when I accidentally ran into a random encounter Shiny Minior. I couldn't tell it was shiny right away, but I threw a Quick Ball just in case. It wasn't having any of that though, and immediately popped out and used Self-Destruct turn 1. I didn't know for sure until much later, when I discovered the data for the covered Minior shiny form in the Pokedex (I never saw it unsheathed to see if it was black or not)
Last year I was playing Silver on VC and had a static encounter shiny Electrode blow up in my face so I feel your pain. No other shiny Electrode will ever fill that void
My worst shiny fail was during a Pokemon Insurgence Nuzlocke where it was a shiny Jolteon and I threw Pokeballs like my like depended on it at like 10% health but I ran out of balls and I was devastated for a week. It was also my first not Pokemon Go shiny Pokemon
Oh I have given up on wild shinies now. Back when I was but a wee lad I found a shiny rattata in gold on virtual console. First ever wild shiny. I catch it, name it, aaaaaaand forget to save. Now if you haven’t played the virtual console gameboy games, it’s very easy to reset if you aren’t paying attention, and you see where this is going. I cried myself to sleep like I had never cried before. Next wild shiny, a zubat in Platinum. This time I actually learned from my past mistakes and saved after I caught the shiny. Well, I tried to anyways but since my game already had save data on it, I couldn’t save the game because for some reason, starting a new game in gen 4 doesn’t erase the current save file, and I didn’t have another game to trade it to so I could either wait to get another game, which I didn’t have any way to buy, or be forced to reset. It was the hardest decision of my life but I decided that I actually wanted to play other things on my 3ds and was thus forced to reset. I have never had another wild shiny since and I’m still upset about both of these stories. Hopefully the next one I find I will catch and actually save the game after catching it.
The red zubat does actually exist believe it or not my friend LOVED pokemon crystal and after training in mount silver for more than 100 hours he found a red zubat
Aside from Raid fails my only real shiny fail was when I was SOS chaining Spinda in Sun and Moon, I had lost hope as it was several hundred Spinda in at that point, when I go to kill without looking...Bam. Killed the shiny. Took Forever to reclaim it
You'd love my first shiny, John. It was a shiny Krickitune (yellow) in Platinum. I honestly hated it, but I caught it anyway, 'cause it was my first. I was so annoyed when it showed up, 'cause I didn't really like Krickitune at all and I couldn't even use it on my team, since it's too weak. Since then, I've only gotten two other shinies, that I both love, and they were both in Sword and Shield. One was a shiny Axew I got while I was trying to breed a good Axew for my sister. The other was a shiny Rockruff that I accidentally ran into on the Isle of Armour, but I'm glad I did. XD
I found a shiny probopass in chargestone cave in my black 2 nuzlocke and it was not my encounter and I didn't knew about shiny clause at that time. Guess what happened
My biggest shiny fail was when I was playing Pokemon x and training up with a low battery and I found a full odds shiney chingling and then as I catch it before I could save my battery died and I lost it
I found a shiny ponyta while i was playing through Pokemon diamond. I legit thought it was a glitch so i didnt catch it. So now every shiny ponyta i get i name it Diamond. I also had a shiny galarian weezing that i encounted in the wild area blew up in my face too.
I failed a shiny skiddo when I was six playing Pokémon y for the first time when I fell in love with the franchise and it makes me cry when I think about it now
My worst shiny fail was: I was playing pokemon b/w and I was at the end and about to catch reshiram. I did 16874 soft resets for this mon I had many and many ultra balls, great balls, and pokeballs, but no master balls because I user them on the swords of justice because they where my first legendaries and around that time I didn't know how awfull they realy where so I used false swipe I paralysed it and started trowing. But because I had terrible luck I failed the shiny because for some stupid reason I was out of pokeballs. And that stupid thing wil never go out of my head and now I hate it just because of that stupid reason.
My first ever shiny was a palpitoad, when I saw it, I was like "Hey look, a pokemon I've never seen before" I caught it and used it on my team, but my sister restarted the game and I lost it
My first Shiny was shiny Guzzlord in Pokemon ultra sun I remember getting it on my 11TH TRY! But I didn't have any beast balls to catch it I kept throwing different pokeballs at it trying to catch it untill my whole team fainted I still regret not buying beast balls or using potions but I was 7 so I was dumb. 😔 (Guzzlord was my favorite Pokemon) My second shiny (that I remember) was a shiny greedent in Pokemon sword I caught this one and named him lucky
I think I've failed 3 shinies so far: 1. A paras in og silver version that still makes me very sad. I'd already played through the game so my team was trained up and i just went through ilex forest again when suddenly this golden paras shows up. I couldn't weaken it because, again, levelled up team and i only had like 2 or 3 pokeballs in my bag. Needless to say i didn't get it. Ever since then i always have always carried tons of pokeballs with me 🙃 2. Similarly to your wimpod fail, i was SRing for a ho-oh in the wormholes, got it pretty quick, had my golisopod in front because i was convinced if its ability activated I'd just switch to a different mon like in a trainer battle... spoiler alert, it doesn't. 3. I was going for a shiny munna on mirage island in omega ruby where only two mons show up, munna of course and ditto. I have a 50% chance of getting my target but ofc i get the ditto. Which is fine by me, shiny ditto is nice. It transforms and i try to catch it in a dive ball for aesthetics. What i don't realise i that transform only gives 5 pp to every move instead of the original amount. So I'm taking my good time because i think i have loads of it. And then it struggles to death 🙃🙃 The ho-oh and ditto i reclaimed and at this point i can laugh about them and my stupidity. The paras tho, that shit still hurts! my first shiny i found was in crystal and i knew what were shiny but i was new so had little to no knowledge i don't remember what shiny it was but i think it was either blue or pink and i tried catching but could not, no that interesting but still i remember some part of it
I've failed 2 shinies, one was a random encounter Spinda in Ruby that I'm still not entirely sure why I ran from, and also a Crabrawler in Moon cause I wasn't paying attention. I also may have reset the save over a legit Japanese shiny Genesect in my used Black copy
I will not forget when I found a full odds shiny caterpie and on the same day I found a shiny fomantis while regularly playing through the game. I caught the caterpie but I failed at catching the fomantis. To be honest I thought it was a gender difference and didn't see the sparkle but I still went for a resisted move just in case. Of course, it crit and it died. Ain't forgetting that anytime soon been if it was a couple years ago.
Playing soul silver I once found a shiny hoothoot. I found the hoothoot before you’re given pokeballs. I’ve never been so mad in my life.
I had a similar experience. Playing through FireRed and found a shiny ratata before getting pokeballs. I was heartbroken

My first shiny was a Zubat from the grass patch just south of violet city where you first find Mareeps in G/S/C.
Before Sun & Moon came out I replayed all the previous games in the months building up to their release. While replaying Heartgold I found another shiny Zubat in that exact patch of grass while looking for a Mareep.
Both must have been 15 years apart. I got a little emotional as the gen 2 Zubat had long been saved over multiple times by now. It honestly felt like it came back to me once I had a way of holding onto him and transferring him up the Gens.
The first Shiny I ever found was a Weepinbell in Gold ... my parents refused to let me take my Gameboy to school, so none of the other kids would believe me that it was differently coloured because the official art for it made it yellow anyways.
My next Shiny was Tentacool in Sapphire, still have him.
I attempted my first Nuzlocke in LeafGreen and bumped into a Shiny Diglett as my Nuzlocke encounter for Diglett Tunnel. Named him Mirage and still have him.
And then. Sapphire. Heracross. Safari Zone.
Threw one ball and it fled... That one was soul crushing...

Funny how when I got my first shiny, I didn't even know it was shiny but I still caught it. It was when I evolved it and it was a much different color than it usually was, I didn't know about shinies at that point but I just treasured it. Btw, it was a shiny ferroseed in pokemon white.

The first shiny I ever encountered was a shiny Floatzel in Pokémon Diamond in 4th grade. I had no idea what shiny Pokémon were, so I asked my friends about it. My friends decided to tell me it was Darkrai disguised as a different colored Floatzel. I believed them because I thought Darkrai was so cool (I still do) and I wanted Darkrai, so I tried to catch it. But I didn’t have enough Pokéballs so I ended up knocking it out and I remember crying about it as a kid.

That Zubat story goes really well with the story of my first shiny. It was Zubat. It was the second one I ever ran into. Since I had caught the first Zubat, I nearly didn't catch the shiny one. I just assumed that Zubat must come in different colors since I didn't know enough about Pokemon to know otherwise (I had also not seen enough Zubat to know otherwise). I did end up catching it though because it sparkled, whereas the first one didn't, which indicated to me that the green one must be special (and boy was it).
I started with Diamond. I wouldn't learn what shiny Pokemon are until about two or three years later, after I had failed a shiny Starly in Platinum's Safari Zone and fished up a shiny Chinchou in SoulSilver. The shiny Chinchou is finally what got to me look up what the deal was with these sparkly Pokemon. Also, yes, I am aware of how crazy my random shiny luck was and still is.

I also want to add that I got two full odds shiny in Pokémon Shield during my first play through of that, but when I tried to Masuda Method a shiny Chewtle, I hatched over 1,000 eggs before I gave up.
I caught a shiny graveler and I knew it could explode so i used my master ball (it was in Crystal VC on the tile before the battle against red)

Alright, here I go, I encountered a shiny tentacool in leafgreen as a child but didn’t know what it was so I ran from it, in the same game I found a shiny geodude that I actually tried to catch but it exploded on me. When I got into middle school I played a bunch of emulators on my phone and there was one normal game of fire red I found a shiny pidgey before I got pokeballs. I taught a neighborhood kid about pokemon about ten years ago. He LOVED shinies. Two of his first full odds shinies where Gravelers that used self-detruct. Another was a Ponyta that he crit killed. He.....took it really well actually. Awesome kid. Don't see him much anymore but I've heard he's doing pretty well.

I remember playing classic gold, and in the course of a single session, I managed to find and catch a shiny koffing, and a shiny Zubat. This was probably 15 years ago, so I don't know how it happened, but I lost both of them. I do know that I didn't save, and either my battery died, or the cartridge jostled enough to unplug, but both those shinys as well as all the story progress i made in that session was gone.
I will never forget my first shiny. I was playing Pokémon Diamond and I was heading through Route 17 to get to Candace. My team was extremely weak from going through the route. Two of them were fainted, one was frozen, and two of them were in red health. My Infernape was up front since it had the most health. I then ran across a Sneasel but this Sneasal was not the normal red and black but pink and yellow. I freaked out knowing I just ran across my first shiny. I tried to catch it at full health but it wasn't working and I only had a handful of ultra balls, one great ball, and four poke'balls. I had to weaken it but Infernape only had strong moves against it. Now, this Sneasel is three levels higher than my Infernape and my Infernape knew Rock Smash then. Rock Smash was only 20 power then. I had faced a Sneasel the same level as the shiny before and I knew that rock smash brought it to yellow health. So I went for it and Infernape...freaking..critical hit the Sneasel with Rock Smash and OHKO'd it. I was so pissed. Mad enough that I saved the game at the pokecenter and released Infernape before restarting the game and getting him back. I have been shiny hunting Sneasel for years now off and on and want it back and have yet to get it.
Second shiny was Lickitung that I came across in SoulSilver and I still have it and is in my Shield version.
Third shiny was Torchic in Emerald. This is the first shiny hunt I did with restarting the game until I got him. I still have him and he's been transferred to Shield.
Fourth shiny was full odds while playing Pokemon White. It was a Meinfoo that I ran into while progressing through the game. I unfortunately don't have it anymore. I wanted to play a Nuzlocke of Gen 5 and I had two copies of Pokemon White and I deleted the file that had the shiny Meinfoo on it.
Next one was Treecko in Alpha Sapphire that I restarted until I got it. I still have him on that Alpha Sapphire.
Shiny Lugia that I also restarted with on Omega Ruby and is now in my Shield version.
Full odds shiny Zoroa in Shield with the DLC when it came out. Zoroa popped up on the beach and I was completing the poke'dex to get my shiny charm and it ended up being shiny.
The next shiny happened hours after I got Zoroa. I finished the poke'dex by then and had my shiny charm. I was continuing the story for the DLC when I ran into a Golduck in the cave by accident and it turned out to be shiny. I got two shinies in one day. I have never been that lucky.
The latest shiny I got was from a trade with a friend. He caught a shiny Eevee in Pokemon Go and had transferred it to his Sword version but he doesn't really like shiny Eevee and I traded it for a Shield exclusive Pokemon. I have not yet decided which Eevee evolution to turn it into yet.
I have also gotten several shinies from Surprise Trade/Wonder Trade but I often release them or retrade them since they're hacked mons.
My Shiny Fails include a crit vs a Shiny Metapod at +6 Def and a Shiny Quagsire running away. But by far the worst happened during the Bug Catching Contest in Gold, where I encountered a Shiny Weedle. It poisoned my Croconaw and killed it before I could catch it.
Got my Shiny Nidoqueen though, wich I absolutely adore.
I have only heard once of three different shiny Zubats. There is even a Video here on RUclips:

My most heart breaking shiny fail was a male nidoran in firered. I found him in the safari zone and I already loved taking a nidoking through Kanto but a blue one would have been awesome but it ran away after a few failed balls and to this day I spend extra time in the safari zone looking for one
The first shiny I remember finding was a shiny Magcargo in Pokemon Platinum. It was in the mountain where Heatran is and Buck accompanies you. Ran into it, saw the sparkles and was like, “What is this???” so I killed Buck’s Claydol and the Weezing accompanying the Magcargo, and went to try to lower its HP. That day, I learned that rock-type pokemon do not resist rock-type attacks. I used Rock Slide, thinking it would be neutral damage but it was super effective and killed the shiny. At the time, I didn’t know how rare those were so I spent the next hour trying to find it again, and after that I thought I had imagined it. To this day, I still have never found another shiny Magcargo.
I lost my shiny roggenrola by resetting my game.(It was my first ever shiny mon) And a gen4 shiny cacturne in the same area you found graveler and killed it. Like John's video if you have lost a shiny and if not just do it anyway!
My first and only fail (not including Raid shinies in Swsh) was ponyta in LGP, but in the fan made pokemon solar slight and lunar dark I failed a shiny by selecting a supereffictive move and the second I clicked it I realised it was shiny, not the best stories I know
The only shiny fail i've ever had was in let's go coming of cerulean cave there was a random shiny rattata and it disapeared mere inches from touching it. But I did come from hunting snorlaxes and getting two so it wasn't awful.
I had caught a shiny Nidorina in my first play through of Pokemon Gold back when it came out. First shiny I ever caught (not counting the red Gyarados) and I loved it because of the colors. My younger brother ended up deleting my save file with that Nidorina and I never had another shiny Pokemon again until I hatched a shiny Staryu in Pokemon X.
The only shiny Pokemon I have failed to catch was a shiny Zebstrika in Omega Ruby. I remember encountering it at one of the Mirage Islands.

My first shiny was a Victory Road Machoke in Firered, still have it in Sword
I have only failed two shinies so far. And I remember both vividly. The first was on Pokémon X. The second Pokémon game I have ever owned. One day, I decided that I wanted a shiny Gulpin. So I went to route 5 (I think) and started horde hunting, getting Gulpin, Scraggy, and some rare Minun and Plusle. At one point, days later, I was in the car with my parents and was still hunting. I looked up from my game to talk to my parents, and forgot if I had run from my last horde. So, after the game ran through some camera angles, I clicked run. Only to catch a glimpse of a Shiny Gulpin in the front just before running away. I caught two shiny Scraggy before finally reclaiming it. The second one was much more recent. I was horde hunting for Oddish in Pokémon Omega Ruby (my first ever Pokémon game) for a Shinylocke play through of Alpha Sapphire. And this time, I found a shiny Roselia. I noticed it, but as I was knocking out the non-shinies, I got too excited and killed the shiny by accident. This one didn’t hurt much though. I already had a shiny Roserade and if I catch a shiny, I like it to be the first evolutionary form. So if it was a Budew, then I would’ve been mad.
That last one hurt me...Wimp Out/Emergency Exit are HORRIBLE abilities that should never have existed!
I have never failed a shiny but I’m not proud of it, I’m terrified because that means that one of them in the future will be my first failed shiny and it will eat away at me for my entire life

My first shiny is a ditto in cerulean cave in firered ...then I played fire Red again and to my surprise , I got a shiny machoke in cerulean cave..
So something unbelieving happened in my HG NUZLOCKE! So I got to Team Rocket's hideout in Mahogany, and the first Electrode I got was a Shiny one, I could not believe it. I replaced the Voltorb I had previously got, which coinedently had the same nature, ability, and level as the Shiny Electrode I got, it was just evolved. Also It didn't know Self-Destruct which was nice.
My first legit shiny was an audino in the Ultra Moon wormhole. I was just watching the MML and looked down at my screen and saw a purple audino. My second made me gasp. I was just doing a lets go Pikachu playthrough and just as I was entering the room with the key to the 7th gym, there it was. A pink Magmar. Keep in mind that I didn't have the shiny charm, I had no catch combo and even if I did it wasn't high enough to raise my odds, and I had no lure. Put that on top of the fact that Magmar is the rare encounter for the mansion. I just shoved a golden razzberry in its mouth and chucked an Ultra Ball at its face. I found it a while ago and I'm still amazed I actually found it. My first fail though was a shiny Altaria in the Ultra Moon wormhole. I love it and Swablu's shiny, so I really wanted one. I finally found it and I was worrying about it having brave bird. now I know that it doesn't, but I found out too late that it knew Perish Song. It broke free of all of my Pokeballs and it fainted.
My first shiny fail was in Ultra Sun... I was grinding some Pokémon to level 100 by chaining Chansey through S.O.S., and I came across a shiny Chansey! I was so happy!!!! So I went to catch it... and I had no poke balls...
Another one was in an ultra wormhole, I was soft resetting for shiny Heatran and I was stupid enough to TURN MY DS UPSIDE DOWN, so I hit the wrong move and knocked it out.
And finally, shiny poipole. I got shiny poipole by soft resetting in front of the gift poipole, and I accidentally SRed when I found it.
But I didn’t give up with shiny hunting, and my first shiny Pokémon from a hunt was a rolycoly in about 300 encounters.
I have never failed a shiny to my knowledge, so either I was super young and didn't realise it was shiny or have forgotten.

My first ever shiny Pokémon I ran into was a Shiny Graveler in Platinum as well! At the time I’d never heard of shiny Pokémon before. While I was climbing up to the top of Coronet to deal with Cyress and the end of the world I ran into one just on the second floor where the boarded up cave entrance was. I ran into it and was like: Why is Graveler Brown? He’s always grey I’m confused. In my mind I thought he was a glitched Pokémon and thought “huh, interesting. Ima catch it and ask my friends at school tomorrow about why Graveler was brown.” It was like 28-32 can’t remember exactly but it was in that level range since the next floor of Coronet near the boarded cave entrance everything was around those levels. I went back to school the next day and asked my friend why tf my Graveler was brown and she said:
Her: oh! You found a shiny Pokémon!
Me: wtf is a shiny Pokémon?
Her: *explains the basic definition of one to me*
Me: oh shit really that’s pretty neat.

That was my first shiny Pokémon ever and only shiny I ever found from Platinum. I was never interested in shiny hunting until now at the age of 22. What terrifies me (I’m sure you know this but) is that past me didn’t remember that Explosion/Self Destruct was a thing the Geodude line could learn….thinking about its move set rn. It was in the level range to have known Self Destruct. I can’t remember if I damaged it or if I just hucked Ultra Balls at it or even how many it took. But just knowing how extremely lucky I was to have caught a Shiny Like that makes me simultaneously anxious and proud I managed to do that.
I personally haven’t failed catching shinys…yet….hopefully that trend continues. My second ever shiny was an easy Zangoose in Pokémon Black. He was a less stressful catch. I found him in a double battle encounter in the dark grass when I was looking for I think a rare Bisharp encounter and that one I was super shocked and aware. I transferred him up thankfully. Sadly I don’t have that Graveler anymore because I caught him far before black and white came out so I couldn’t transfer him :(. But to this day I’ll never forget my first Shiny.
My first shiny fail was in Virtual console Crystal. I had just gotten my starter, and walked out of the lab. First encounter in the grass was an uncatchable Shiny Pidgey. No Pokeballs, no Pidgey.
My first shiny ever was a shiny Whismur in emerald, in the cave to save Lil Peeko, and I used a weak tackle with a weaker Pokémon.. and sure enough. I got a crit, o'ko. I was.. devastated. I feel that pain that a critical hit can cause. Always at the worst times and never at the best times.

My very first encounter in Heart Gold was a shiny Ratatta. Yeah, I didn't pick the game back up for 3 months.
When i first got my first Pokémon game (Pokémon omega ruby) i got my starter and my first encounter was a shiny, that got me furious.
First shiny I ever caught was a Poliwhirl in Silver when I was a kid. Caught a shiny Meowth shortly after but then I had a long drought in finding a shiny. It wasn't until Diamond and it was a Cascoon. Didn't catch it because I ran out of Pokeballs. Last shiny I have found was a Foretress in ORAS and I did catch it.
My first shiny was in Gen 2 headbutting trees and found a pink buttrerfree. I wasn't able to catch it for some reason whether I killed it or didn't have balls. I fixed my problem and headbutted again and eventually found another one. I then proceeded to get a game shark and cloned and turned it into other Pokémon.
I caught full odds pichu in the trophy garden, wooper in the safari zone and ponyta in the tall grass but I deleted the save file and forgot to trade them over to heartgold.
I cought a shiny Chewtle at the very beginning of Shield, which remains on my team to this day

I remember my first (and only) shiny fail. I was playing Moon doing SOS for shiny Bounsweet. And I must've been distracted because it popped up and I didn't realize it was shiny. I was in the zone and I knocked it out without a second thought. I realized that it the shiny the moment it fainted in front of my eyes. I freaked out thinking I was seeing things, but I checked my pokedex and Bounsweet was indeed seen shiny. What makes things worse is that this shiny Bounsweet was my second ever shiny

When I was in 10th grade I was playing Fire Red while waiting for Drama practice after school. In Rock Tunnel or one of the caves a black Zubat popped up. I didn't even know shinies were a concept or possibility so I just thought, 'that's weird. I should catch this.' So I did. Immediately after that, I ran into a yellow Geodude. At this point I thought something was wrong with my game or my screen, but just in case, I wanted to catch this one, too. I went into my bag but I'd used my last Pokéballs on the Zubat 😭 I didn't wanna kill this possibly one-of-a-kind Geodude so I ran away. Foolishly, I returned to the cave later with Pokéballs hoping I would find it again but alas 😞
I told one of my friends who was more well-versed in Pokémon about what happened and he told me about shinies and just how rare it was to find one, let alone two in a row! I will always remember that Geodude. And I hope one day I can find my copy of Fire Red to see my shiny Crobat again
My biggest fail was with the Pokemon Gold Red Gyarados. I got it down to red health; then it thrashed, confused itself and knocked itself out :(
My first shiny (excluding Gyarados) was a Gastly. I killed it, and as it fell, I noticed it’s blue coloration. It was in OG Pearl. Gonna hunt it again in Shining Pearl. Gotta redeem myself
Watching this 9 months later and just had to put that gen 4 was also when I "got" my first shiny. I was on my way to mr.pokemon's house in heartgold had just got the game. Last patch of grass before getting there a pokemon encounter. The sparkles go off and boom a shiny caterpie, golden like the game I was playing, just shiny there taunting me. With no pokeballs yet because you get those fron lyra after the catching tutorial I had to run away. I spend hours, days trying to get that to re appear but no it is gone and will forever be in my heart.
Idk if this counts but when I was kid I played Pokémon white and countinuously restarted after the catching toturial and juniper, I think caught a few shiny patrats, the gray goblins
If you've been a shiny hunter long enough there's a good chance you've lost one to a self KO-ing move. My first ever shiny fail wasn't until Generation 7 when I accidentally ran into a random encounter Shiny Minior.
I couldn't tell it was shiny right away, but I threw a Quick Ball just in case. It wasn't having any of that though, and immediately popped out and used Self-Destruct turn 1. I didn't know for sure until much later, when I discovered the data for the covered Minior shiny form in the Pokedex (I never saw it unsheathed to see if it was black or not)

Last year I was playing Silver on VC and had a static encounter shiny Electrode blow up in my face so I feel your pain. No other shiny Electrode will ever fill that void

My worst shiny fail was during a Pokemon Insurgence Nuzlocke where it was a shiny Jolteon and I threw Pokeballs like my like depended on it at like 10% health but I ran out of balls and I was devastated for a week. It was also my first not Pokemon Go shiny Pokemon

Oh I have given up on wild shinies now. Back when I was but a wee lad I found a shiny rattata in gold on virtual console. First ever wild shiny. I catch it, name it, aaaaaaand forget to save. Now if you haven’t played the virtual console gameboy games, it’s very easy to reset if you aren’t paying attention, and you see where this is going. I cried myself to sleep like I had never cried before.
Next wild shiny, a zubat in Platinum. This time I actually learned from my past mistakes and saved after I caught the shiny. Well, I tried to anyways but since my game already had save data on it, I couldn’t save the game because for some reason, starting a new game in gen 4 doesn’t erase the current save file, and I didn’t have another game to trade it to so I could either wait to get another game, which I didn’t have any way to buy, or be forced to reset. It was the hardest decision of my life but I decided that I actually wanted to play other things on my 3ds and was thus forced to reset. I have never had another wild shiny since and I’m still upset about both of these stories. Hopefully the next one I find I will catch and actually save the game after catching it.

My first shiny was bulbasaur in pokemon go, in my town, bulbasaurs are pretty rare, its now an ivysaur and my buddy.
My worst fail was a regirock that ran out of pp in ultra space cuz I didn’t have skill swap + harvest. I found it again 1/2 and hour later tho lol
I’ve only encountered 2 shinies. A shiny vanillite in Pokémon y that was my first shiny, and then the red Gyarados in the lake of rage.
The red zubat does actually exist believe it or not my friend LOVED pokemon crystal and after training in mount silver for more than 100 hours he found a red zubat
Aside from Raid fails my only real shiny fail was when I was SOS chaining Spinda in Sun and Moon, I had lost hope as it was several hundred Spinda in at that point, when I go to kill without looking...Bam. Killed the shiny. Took Forever to reclaim it
You'd love my first shiny, John. It was a shiny Krickitune (yellow) in Platinum. I honestly hated it, but I caught it anyway, 'cause it was my first. I was so annoyed when it showed up, 'cause I didn't really like Krickitune at all and I couldn't even use it on my team, since it's too weak.
Since then, I've only gotten two other shinies, that I both love, and they were both in Sword and Shield. One was a shiny Axew I got while I was trying to breed a good Axew for my sister. The other was a shiny Rockruff that I accidentally ran into on the Isle of Armour, but I'm glad I did. XD

I found a shiny probopass in chargestone cave in my black 2 nuzlocke and it was not my encounter and I didn't knew about shiny clause at that time. Guess what happened
My biggest shiny fail was when I was playing Pokemon x and training up with a low battery and I found a full odds shiney chingling and then as I catch it before I could save my battery died and I lost it
I found a shiny ponyta while i was playing through Pokemon diamond. I legit thought it was a glitch so i didnt catch it. So now every shiny ponyta i get i name it Diamond. I also had a shiny galarian weezing that i encounted in the wild area blew up in my face too.
I failed a shiny skiddo when I was six playing Pokémon y for the first time when I fell in love with the franchise and it makes me cry when I think about it now
My first shiny was a shiny quagsire in Pokémon X and I screamed and my dad got mad at me no, not because I screamed, because he was jealous
My worst shiny fail was: I was playing pokemon b/w and I was at the end and about to catch reshiram. I did 16874 soft resets for this mon I had many and many ultra balls, great balls, and pokeballs, but no master balls because I user them on the swords of justice because they where my first legendaries and around that time I didn't know how awfull they realy where so I used false swipe I paralysed it and started trowing. But because I had terrible luck I failed the shiny because for some stupid reason I was out of pokeballs. And that stupid thing wil never go out of my head and now I hate it just because of that stupid reason.
My take away from this: I like yellow, you like yellow, we have stuff in common
My first ever shiny was a palpitoad, when I saw it, I was like
"Hey look, a pokemon I've never seen before"
I caught it and used it on my team, but my sister restarted the game and I lost it
I had a shiny Quagsire in SoulSilver, but I reset the cartridge before transferring it RIP
My first Shiny was shiny Guzzlord in Pokemon ultra sun
I remember getting it on my 11TH TRY! But I didn't have any beast balls to catch it
I kept throwing different pokeballs at it trying to catch it untill my whole team fainted
I still regret not buying beast balls or using potions but I was 7 so I was dumb. 😔

My second shiny (that I remember) was a shiny greedent in Pokemon sword I caught this one and named him lucky
I think I've failed 3 shinies so far:
1. A paras in og silver version that still makes me very sad. I'd already played through the game so my team was trained up and i just went through ilex forest again when suddenly this golden paras shows up. I couldn't weaken it because, again, levelled up team and i only had like 2 or 3 pokeballs in my bag. Needless to say i didn't get it. Ever since then i always have always carried tons of pokeballs with me 🙃
2. Similarly to your wimpod fail, i was SRing for a ho-oh in the wormholes, got it pretty quick, had my golisopod in front because i was convinced if its ability activated I'd just switch to a different mon like in a trainer battle... spoiler alert, it doesn't.
3. I was going for a shiny munna on mirage island in omega ruby where only two mons show up, munna of course and ditto. I have a 50% chance of getting my target but ofc i get the ditto. Which is fine by me, shiny ditto is nice. It transforms and i try to catch it in a dive ball for aesthetics. What i don't realise i that transform only gives 5 pp to every move instead of the original amount. So I'm taking my good time because i think i have loads of it. And then it struggles to death 🙃🙃
The ho-oh and ditto i reclaimed and at this point i can laugh about them and my stupidity. The paras tho, that shit still hurts! (Back then i even hurried to a city to buy balls and then hurried back in hopes i could still find it cause i only ran from it and didn't knock it out. Oh, poor past me.)
my first shiny i found was in crystal and i knew what were shiny but i was new so had little to no knowledge i don't remember what shiny it was but i think it was either blue or pink and i tried catching but could not, no that interesting but still i remember some part of it
I've failed 2 shinies, one was a random encounter Spinda in Ruby that I'm still not entirely sure why I ran from, and also a Crabrawler in Moon cause I wasn't paying attention. I also may have reset the save over a legit Japanese shiny Genesect in my used Black copy
I will not forget when I found a full odds shiny caterpie and on the same day I found a shiny fomantis while regularly playing through the game. I caught the caterpie but I failed at catching the fomantis. To be honest I thought it was a gender difference and didn't see the sparkle but I still went for a resisted move just in case. Of course, it crit and it died. Ain't forgetting that anytime soon been if it was a couple years ago.
