AMAZING. Shout-out to Tad and his channel. I subscribed to his phone support, and probably saved > $4000 thanks to him. My story follows. I live in Virginia. I noticed my electric bills this past winter went from $200-$300 per month to almost $1000. We just installed an outdoor hottub, so I thought that was the problem. When we turned the A/C on this spring, it was not working. The diagnosis from an HVAC company was bad loop pumps, which explains what happened this winter. No water was circulating in the loop, and the heater went to electric backup. Had no idea. The HVAC quote to replace both pumps and purge/recharge the loop was $4500. I was also quoted $250 to replace the capacitor. Something didn't seem right so I did a little investigation and found Tad's videos. That's when I knew I could do it myself. This job was really simple. I found 2 replacement pumps from Geo-Hydro (they are great to, they love Tad, and they have techs who can also help troubleshoot installation of their products). I replaced 2 blown 10amp fuses to the pumps so got power restored, and then replaced the pumps (only 1 was bad, but decided to replace both anyways - 18 year old system). But water was still leaking. Turns out the flow center (which is made of cast iron) had rusted and decayed a bit and had developed leaks, hence the loop could not maintain a charge. Both Tad and Geo-Hydro helped me along the way. All in I spent about $1300 on parts. I bought a loop pressure/recharge tool for $50 online, and now had everything I needed to complete the job. I had to apply some heat (blow torch) to get the loop threaded fittings to loosen from the old flow center, and used a heat gun to soften the black poly lines so I could wrench-out the fittings, then mounted the new flow center and replaced the fittings and tightened up all the hose clamps. Recharged the loop with water, no leaks, and holding almost 70 PSI of pressure. Because my loop comes into the unit from the ceiling above, only a few feet of water was released when I unhookd the flow center. Tad didn't think a loop purge was necessary, and he walked me through recharging the loop, bleeding/burbing the pumps, and testing the system. I burped the lines and within a few minutes I had steady pressure at 65PSI and no fluctations. The pressure differential from loop input to output was only 1-2 PSI, so all good. After 1 day the pressure is holding at 65 PSI and the cooling system is back online so I am happy. What was a $4500 quote for 2 pumps and a purge would have turned much more expensive when the HVAC company found the leaky flow center. I am sure the next quote would have been $1000s of additional dollars for a new flow center, making this job probably $6k-$7k. I got it done for $1300 and probably saved $5k, and now have the ability to monitor the loop pressure with my pressure guage tester so I don't have any surprises like this last winter. Oh, and the capacitor that they wanted to replace was perfectly fine. I could not recommend Tad more. He was super nice, quick to respond, and spot on with his guidance. Geo-Hydro was great too.
@@TaddyDigest Tad, I have a new problem, hoping for your help. I sent you a text message, but will repeat here. The fuse in my attic air handler (5-amp with 24 volt) keeps blowing. What could be shorted? can you help me isolate the source of the short? thanks, Lance
You can lose pressure in ground loop with heat cycles with no leaks. On my system the pipe stretches gust enough to lose pressure on new system. You can install a reservoir or pressure tank or check and fill every 6 months like i do. Great video

Just joined. I’m replacing a small 1 ton unit in my bonus room. It only has a single ground loop pump. Also, the unit is in the attic and has no valve before the pump.

Just a couple things when changing pumps you were ok in your steps up to when after the new pumps where installed you then rotated the 3 way valve to the operating position that opened the loop to where you just removed the pumps a large amount of air is now going in to the loop!!! You should have left the 3 way valve in the position of unit side only used the 1" flush ports connected a garden hose to one side and another hose to the other side going to a drain both hoses with valves and flushed just the flow center to unit coax with a hose so air was not introduced to the loop. Now the only way that job will not be a problem is to re flush with a flush cart. Air in a closed loop will simulate a leak for ever air is compressible water is not. After you flushed with a garden hose for a while then you dead head the return hose(one going to the drain) you then rotate the 3 way valve with the hose connected to the water source to both unit and loop and flush port then rotate the 3 way valve on the return side to operating position closing off the flush port then lastly rotate the 3 way valve on the water hose feeding the system if you leave a pressure gauge in the PT port you will see you will have household water pressure on the whole system and no air introduced. Thanks.
Bought a place with both air and earth source heat pumps. They explained their are three separate geo pits but a plumber got into them by accident. Only one unit works. Just running the air source but would like to see the whole thing working. What a waste. I suspect no local hvac companies knew what to do so they opted to put in the air source. You definitely need to repressurize . It's probably because they did not use a flush cart when they installed it.
@TaddyDigest they said they did use a flush cart when installed, but the loop can still stretch, so they need to do the cart again after they did the simple water injection method to 60 psi, they are coming this week as it has been throwing an e10 error. Could the loop be leaking? It is a major waterfurnace dealer here in sw michigan, been dealers for 30 + years.
@TaddyDigest should i just buy the little petes port water injector and pressurize it each year? The system is under warranty until December.
