My daughter and I were so fortunate to be present for the filming of this video (that's her in the background re-filling water bottles). Saskia and Ursula were such great hosts and we can't thank them enough. Please, if you can, support this great organization!
I bonded a 1 year old neutered boar with my 3 year old sow now spayed for a because of tumour. And they get on great. My boar is very protective over his girl. If she gets spooked, he will walk over and sit in front of her until she is ok🙂. Some videos of them are in my channel
Our follower Diana started a petition to have me go on the Ellen Show to share my love of guinea pig with the world and to encourage proper care. Would you take a moment to sign it? www.thepetitionsite.com/617/275/608/feature-la-guinea-pug-rescue-on-ellen/
Being on Ellen's show is a chance to educate thousands of people that guinea pigs, (and rabbits, hamsters, mice, rats, hedgehogs) can't all be treated the same, given the same cages, foods, etc. Small animals need healthy environments, proper nutrition and enrichment - being an educated pet owner is a must!! No more sticking a lone guinea pig into a tiny cage and shoving it into the dark corner of a kids room where it will occasionally be fed as it withers away from its unhealthy environment. Petition signed and shared!
We had 2 females. 1 of which liked to boss the other around and was a bit of a food hog. And every so often when she was being a little too pushy the other one would bite her butt. Then the more dominant one would lay off and they would be friends again until the next time.
I call that their nervous chatter. My piggies make that sound when they are nervous about the 'boss piggy' being in the other piggys' personal space. They also make it if they sense a cat or dog around while I have them out of their pen.
Perfect timing! Thanks for the video Saskia! We got our third female yesterday and it has been a bit rocky. We got a 4 weeks old female for our pair of females (one is 1 yearvold and the other one is 6 months old). Our oldest is super mellow so she couldn't care less about what is going on, but the 6 months old...super bossy! She can't get her way with the oldest, but boy she sure is taking it on the baby. The first day she was chasing her and nipping quite frequently. It is getting better now, but she is still doing it (just not getting out of her way to push the baby around). I feel the oldest intervenes sometimes, kind of telling her to knock it off. Just like you said, at the rescue they were behaving just fine. As soon as we got home, she started. It will work out 😊. Love bonding videos!
It’s good to know that neutered females and males goes well-our local piggie rescue only matches neutered boys with girls and I need someone for my Thor who won’t get along with my other boars and I’ve been nervous about trying him with a female
I have a 20 week old female who needed to be taught to eat and everything and so I got rescued through Scott help me find two one-and-a-half-year-old bonded females and there's one that is very much the dominant one and I think I'm going to have to separate when I feed so that the baby gets enough food. I love your videos! You and Scott are amazing thank you for the work you do!
Hi Saskia, Do you know if a neutered boar would accept a baby sow? Looking forward to hearing from you! :) Amazing channel and amazing work that you do, love it!
We had 1 girl who just would not tolerate any other girl anywhere near ( and we tried all 12) we called her stroppy poppy - she lived it up in her own cage all her life .
Forgot to add that you always look so beautiful in your videos and so chilled ,I always look hot and bothered and covered in hay when I come out of my guinea pig room lol
I've got a herd of 8 girls. Whenever we adopt another girl, we quarantined them and after two weeks add them to the herd the existing ladies just go and introduce themselves and then chill.
I have two boars that sleep close together and occasionally will play chase with each other popcorning they are coming to over two years old. Not typically what you would see with boars.
I'm so sorry I couldn't understand their names but last one you put in for bonding I just love how they were eating together they are too sweet together.
My piggies got along fine when they first met but then at home they didn't. I had to keep them separate until I cleaned the cage of all there scents. After that they got along perfectly fine
I’m fostering for Metropolitan GP rescue. I think Maryland requires all the pigs to be fixed. I’ll have to talk to manager, Becky to confirm. Saska, you would love her. I have 2 fixed boys and one fixed girl. And one who has birth control implant for polycystic ovary disease equivalent because I am GP neurotic. I believe Boy/girl are generally the easiest bondings. I understand why people don’t want to take the risk to get pigs fixed and it’s awesome that you can match boys. MPGR rarely loses GPs. I think the loss rate is on the order of dog/ cats, but I could be wrong so I’ll need to find out. Anyway lovely bonding as always.
Hey Saskia, I commented on your bonding males video about this one and I just need a little help. I'm a first time guinea pig owner I've owned my pigs afew months I got one of them from a family who couldn't take care of her anymore but she never had a cage mate and she was about a year or so old and the other I got from a lady who didn't have the time to care for her pigs. From the lady who had the pigs I took two piggies home and they were bonded. I tried to put my other pig I got from the family with them a few times and it always ended in someone fighting I didn't really understand why I always had a huge open area with hay and food but they still fought. Now my pig that I got from the lady one of the pigs passed away due to age and now I have two and they live separate both in Midwest cages by themselves. Now I've been trying about every weekend for about 40minutes to bond them but they always fight. Could it be because there both too dominant or because the one never had a cage mate. I just want to get them into one cage and getting along happy. Thank you -Alissa (plz help Saskia ❤❤)
Alissa King I’ve heard that separating the pigs when the fight can be very stressful for the pigs and when you separate them and put them together again they don’t pick up where they left off but instead start over again. I would suggest letting them sort out their differences for probably three hours (once they seem to be fine with each other leave them in the open area Incase they fight again). Once they seem ok with each other it’s probably best to stay in the room but you can be doing something else. Only fully remove the piggies from each other if there is blood and scratches on the face are normal. I true piggie fight will look like just one blob of fur. Separate them with a towel/blanket if it comes to this or if you see blood. If it does come to this your pigs probably cannot be bonded. (This is all stuff I’ve heard so you might want to fact check it but I do have 3 pigs so I know that at least most of this is true)
I think my guinea pigs Ricky and Lucy might be buddha pigs. Ricky had been neutered for a couple of months when I introduced him to Lucy, and there was no aggression or teeth chattering or anything. They sniffed each other a bit but just wandered around the pen eating hay and veggies. I left them in for about an hour to be safe but it was probably a match from the first few minutes lol
I have three girls but two dominant girls and one like the sweet girl from this video! One dominant girl wins because she is a slightly bigger pig but the other dominant girl just won't give up her dominance. They got in a huge fight. The smaller dominant girl got so stressed and got ring worm break out. So bummed out, was looking forward to my mini herd!
I have four female piggies. 2 I bought together from the same litter - they get on swimmingly but then I brought home a new female piggy and introduced. It was fine at first but a month down the line and ever since Luna (my aggressive piggy) has bullied Bella. (My timid scared baby) she stops her from eating and drinking and always chases her and bites her chin. I have a new piggy, she hasn’t been introduced yet BUT I’m thinking of just pairing her with Bella and keeping newbie and Bella separate from aggressive Luna. Luna gets on really well with her sister, Ginny.
I was boarding two female skinny pigs for a few months that had previously been bonded. The owners said that got along great. But at my house they bickered nonstop. I moved them to a larger cage and the bickering only got worse. They never drew blood and since they weren't my pigs I really didn't want to separate them. There was no blood or scratches but the one the was getting picked on would cry and run away every time the aggressor approached her. I felt so bad for her. Then she scratched her eye on some hay probably trying to run away from her sister. I put a divider in the cage so they would still be able to see each other. But I wanted to give the little one a break while I treated her eye and give her a chance to heal. When she was better I took away the divider and the bickering pretty much stopped. I really don't understand girls and their drama. Hahaha... Boys, on the other hand, I have tons of experience with.
Hi! What is the process for introducing a neutered Male to 2 girls? The girls and boy are in separate cages at the moment, when I've put the cages near each other there's a lot of teeth chattering! Should I introduce them all at once? I don't really have an option to give the new boy up, other than back to the rescue. Thanks!
I just did an intro with four girls and I was sweating I have a mean girl who was pulling EVERYONE HAIR OUT but she stopped after an hour and now only chases the new girl once in a while
This has let me understand more about Guinea pig bonding . I ve 2 male piggies 1 with 9 months old and the other in 8 months old . They have put together since bought but only live together harmony for a week . The 8 months old piggy , chocolate turn aggressive and bite the older one , patch . So sad
Hey Saskia, for some reason, on your last couple videos the volumme has been real low. I can barely hear you and I have my volume all the way up. I'm not having the problem with other videos, maybe you're filming with a different phone? Just wanted to mention it
@@chuckhankens9341 that's always possible except I wasn't having a hard time with other videos and it's only been on the last couple of Saskia's videos.
@@chuckhankens9341 I wouldn't have mentioned it if I hadn't checked everything on my end first, also if I go back and play some of her older videos, the sound is fine.
I’ve got 5 sows together in a massive cage, they are very happy together. I have a male who I’m getting neutered so that he can live with them? Any advice or similar situations and experience anyone? :)
Great video as always Saskia I have two gorgeous girls who have been together around 3 years whenever I try to bond them with another girl either Dotty is fine but daisy not so much or vice versus I would like to try them with a neutered male do you think there is any chance that this could be a possibility .?
I had to split my trip of boys up yesterday. One has a really big cage than the other two so we are going to get three girls to put with one neutered boar. The others wont be alone, they will just be in a split cage. Can you give me tips on bonding a group?
Can I ask a question? :) I have 3 boars living together, unfortunately one of them (the younger pig) got a bit older. I'm guessing a hormonal storm inside and got dominant. From the least dominant pig he won quite fast, but the boss pig and him got into fights.. First it wasn't too bad so I tried keeping them together in hopes it would go away again. But since today I separated them because one of them got a wound. I know reintroducing will not be smart, but now I'd like to get the young one fixed and add a female to buddy up with him. Is this smart? Will the bonded pair be okay if they smell the younger boar and the female pig in the same room? Or is this a bad idea? Advice would be much appreciated! I'm afraid if I get another boar, maybe the same will happen, and I don't have space for 3 cages.. (2 is already more than we wanted but better than saying goodbye to any of my piggies)
Hi Saskia, I have 6 gunea pigs. One is a teddy. I know their skin tends to be dry and she had a patch on her back where she lost her hair because of her dry skin. I have been putting coconut oil on it but her hair doesnt seem to be growing back. Any advice would be appreciated please.
Hi Saskia, thanks for all the really useful videos! Do you think it is safe for male guinea pigs to be neutered and is it better to try and bond a male guinea pig than leave him on his own? Many thanks!
I have two females that had a bit of trouble bonding with each other but have zero issues with my Male (not fixed). He would actually get between them to stop the struts. It's super cute tho, they do cuddle with him. I have not seen humping but if I get piggies I am ready to take full responsibility and I have an entire area already reserved for the 4 I already have. The 4th one is a Male and he refuses to bond with anyone, he is still close to the others just doesnt like sharing space
Hello fellow guinea pig lovers, I have a question. I am adopting a male guinea pig and the rescue says they have tried 5 males and 2 spayed females but all have failed. Many in the guinea pig community get quite upset when seeing a single guinea pig. Thank you all❤️🐹
Well first of all "bashing" sounds very negative and I like to stay away from that. Only kindness and loving "education" will make a real difference because people don't shut down but actually open up and are willing to listen. When we have a male that is a bit of a trouble maker as we call them, and he does not get along with pigs he has been introduced to we pair him with a baby. From 3 weeks to 2 / 2.5 months would be ideal. I wrote this article a while back. It may be useful Bromancing ( or male guinea pig introductions) By Saskia Chiesa, Director Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue I just got an email asking for tips to a successful boar introduction. Since this is a topic that comes up all the time I decided to write a detailed answer and share it with you all on Facebook. I have no magic tips. This is a mixture of hormones, personality and how those energies work together. That is what determines the outcome. Online there is a lot of talk about neutral space (guinea pigs are not territorial) and clean cages (only matters if the cage housed females right before) but to be honest I don’t think any of that matters. They either get along or they do not, there is no influencing that. What does help is make sure they have a large space for the intro. If they are cooped up in a small intro space they are likely to become irritated with each other and with certain personalities too small a space will likely make them fail to get along. If a male is Alpha and has a high sex drive (usually the males under 1.5yrs - lots of purring and humping) then you want to try and make a match with a male that is the opposite. The opposite would be what I call “Buddha Pigs” and are the ideal companion for any boy. They do not get bothered by a lot. They don’t take offense when the other pig sniffs, humps and rumbles and chatters away. And doesn’t feel the need to do any of those things himself. He remains Zen in the face of an annoying and relentless humper. Those two would be the exact opposite of each other and of course there are a lot of degrees of behavior in between. It is not a science and I make my decision whether or not the boys may or may not be a match by feeling their “vibe” together when we do the intro. We can usually tell in the first 5 minutes if a match is likely to work out, however, every now and then happen boys may appear to be a match but will decide a week later that they are not going to get along after all. Babies (between 3 weeks and 2.5 months) are almost always a match. But when that baby becomes a teen and the hormones start raging they may take issue with each other. Although humpy teens usually get better after 1.5yrs old. So if there is no fighting but the teen is just annoying the other with humpy behavior then it may be worth sitting it out. Lastly if they don’t get along but you love both pigs and don’t want to give up either of them the next best thing is to have them living “apart together”. This can be achieved by dividing the cage so that they can touch noses, smell and see each other. You will even see them snuggling and sleeping right next to each other with the divider in the middle. They just cannot be together. The minute you remove the divider they will act like this is the 1st time they have seen each other and go right back to where they were they left off before the divider was put in. There are exceptions of course but usually this is how they respond. When going for this option make sure that the individual space for each guinea pig is large enough. Single pigs need about as much space as pairs. 2 x 3ft would be the minimum recommendation. Coroplast made cages would work really well for this purpose. Good luck with the Bromancing!!Saskia ChiesaDirector LA Guinea Pig Rescue
Saskia from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue thank you so much, I will definitely look into all of those. He is 1 year so definitely hormonal haha. I have a brand new Midwest cage so I hope everything will go well. Thanks again❤️
Can you make a bonding video of a young castreded boy(Under 1 year old) and baby girl(between 4 and 12 weeks)? And in what kind of space is an introduction the best? I am going to bond within 2 months, i'd like some advice on how to do that. My boy(14 dec 2019) is going to be castreded within a week. And 6 weeks after that we are going to buy a young girl...
Hey! I love the work you do for the piggies 💜💜 I just have a question. I have a 2 year old male guinea pig, who is pretty calm around other animals. He isn’t neutered, but I want to get him a friend. I’ve been trying to decide on whether to get him a female and get him neutered, or to try a boy. I know it really depends on the piggy, but I was just wondering what you would suggest! Or what anyone else thinks. Thanks!
I would see if he can find a same sex friend first and if not then get him fixed. But make sure you find a vet that has done neuter surgeries successfully before. Good luck!
Can someone give me any advice for my guine pig I only have him for 3 days bht still he only comes out to eat and than runs inside to hide he also gets scared if we make sudden movements or noise I really don’t know what to do
I bought a male Guinea and he got along with my other male Guinea for 24hrs and then the next day they got in a fight. I separated them for about an hour but after I put them back together the other guinea began chattering his teeth. I separated them for a few days but tried to put them together again and other Guinea is still chattering teeth. Now I think I have to find new home for him. Any suggestions?
Can someone tell me if there’s a way to get boar glue out of fleece? I am just finding out my “female” guinea pig is a male and I previously had a male that got this stuff in the fleece that I had to cut out... 😩😩 would getting fix help the situation??
i have a female and male guinea pig. but the female is not hitting but nibbling on the male. kind of like making him flinch but she’s not hurting him what should i do ?
I really want a guinea pig and am thinking of adoption. I don't live in la but am only a state away. I'd like to adopt one from your rescue how much do they cost to adopt?

But I wanted to give the little one a break while I treated her eye and give her a chance to heal. When she was better I took away the divider and the bickering pretty much stopped. I really don't understand girls and their drama. Hahaha... Boys, on the other hand, I have tons of experience with.
Does the sound they make when you pet their butts mean they like it?
Just wanted to mention it
Oh oops that is not good. I will remind Ursula to remind me to speak louder. Thank you Mszoomy! ❤
I think it's just ur phone
@@chuckhankens9341 that's always possible except I wasn't having a hard time with other videos and it's only been on the last couple of Saskia's videos.
@@mszoomy Weird🤔 I didn't have a problem
@@chuckhankens9341 I wouldn't have mentioned it if I hadn't checked everything on my end first, also if I go back and play some of her older videos, the sound is fine.
I’ve got 5 sows together in a massive cage, they are very happy together. I have a male who I’m getting neutered so that he can live with them? Any advice or similar situations and experience anyone? :)
Great video as always Saskia
I have two gorgeous girls who have been together around 3 years whenever I try to bond them with another girl either Dotty is fine but daisy not so much or vice versus I would like to try them with a neutered male do you think there is any chance that this could be a possibility .?
What kind of behavior is the low walk that the beautiful brown boy Guinea pig was doing when first put in with tammy?
That is called a "Rumble Strut"
Both my girls are aggressive!!! I want to bond them, I got two single girlies a week apart, with the hopes to bond them, and ive been having NO luck
It may be useful
Bromancing ( or male guinea pig introductions)
By Saskia Chiesa, Director Los Angeles Guinea Pig
Rescue
I just got an email asking for tips to a successful
boar introduction. Since this is a topic that comes up all the time I decided
to write a detailed answer and share it with you all on Facebook.
I have no magic tips. This is a mixture of hormones,
personality and how those energies work together. That is what
determines the outcome.
Online there is a lot of talk about neutral space
(guinea pigs are not territorial) and clean cages (only matters if the cage
housed females right before) but to be honest I don’t think any of that
matters.
They either get along or they do not, there is no
influencing that. What does help is make sure they have a large space for
the intro. If they are cooped up in a small intro space they are likely to
become irritated with each other and with certain personalities too small a
space will likely make them fail to get along.
If a male is Alpha and has a high sex drive (usually
the males under 1.5yrs - lots of purring and humping) then you want to try and
make a match with a male that is the opposite.
The opposite would be what I call “Buddha Pigs” and
are the ideal companion for any boy. They do not get bothered by a lot. They
don’t take offense when the other pig sniffs, humps and rumbles and chatters
away. And doesn’t feel the need to do any of those things himself. He remains
Zen in the face of an annoying and relentless humper. Those two would be the
exact opposite of each other and of course there are a lot of degrees of
behavior in between. It is not a science and I make my decision whether
or not the boys may or may not be a match by feeling their “vibe” together when
we do the intro.
We can usually tell in the first 5 minutes if a match
is likely to work out, however, every now and then happen boys may appear
to be a match but will decide a week later that they are not going to get along
after all.
Babies (between 3 weeks and 2.5 months) are almost
always a match. But when that baby becomes a teen and the hormones start raging
they may take issue with each other.
Although humpy teens usually get better after 1.5yrs
old. So if there is no fighting but the teen is just annoying the other with
humpy behavior then it may be worth sitting it out.
Lastly if they don’t get along but you love both pigs
and don’t want to give up either of them the next best thing is to have them
living “apart together”. This can be achieved by dividing the cage so that they
can touch noses, smell and see each other. You will even see them
snuggling and sleeping right next to each other with the divider in the
middle. They just cannot be together. The minute you remove the divider
they will act like this is the 1st time they have seen each
other and go right back to where they were they left off before the divider was
put in. There are exceptions of course but usually this is how they respond.
When going for this option make sure that the
individual space for each guinea pig is large enough. Single pigs need about as
much space as pairs. 2 x 3ft would be the minimum recommendation. Coroplast made
cages would work really well for this purpose.
I have got a smaller female for my older Guinea pigs and one loves the older one but...the older one does the teeth thing. Should I try again?
Good luck!
I have a neutered male and three females who live together
should do a herd bonding video
Would my two male guinea pigs fight if I added a spayed female?
It seems the bottom of the cage would hurt their feet and legs?
How do you bond a baby boy with daddy? Dad tried to "mount" boy.
I want to get one and i know they do better in pairs or groups im just curious on soms basic and cage size
