A tip for all piggy owners,Get some seed trays , fill with compost , put some grass seed in and wait for it to grow.
When piggies can’t get out into garden for fresh grass, you have a supply that they can eat straight from the tray.

Since your piggies are the same age it's not a good idea to introduce more. They will already have competition between them deciding who's in charge/the strongest once puberty hits.

I wish I had found this channel a long time ago. My high school science teacher had a class guinea pig... Well, guinea pigs, but never more than one at a time. My sister, then myself after she graduated, would take them home over holidays. Now that I've seen these videos, I just feel awful about the treatment they got. There were 4 different ones (that I recall) over the years, but they were all alone, kept in a wire cage all the time, never given baths... just all around not great. My sister and I gave them a lot of love and attention when we took them home, though. That much we did right... I remember one was a female who had long fur on her backside that would always get badly matted and I'd have to cut them off all the time. Mind you, this was 16+ years ago, so I didn't know any better, but I'm wishing I had. Those poor piggies never lasted very long. *:(* This channel is awesome and so informative I absolutely love it. Thank you.

There's an easy test you can do, to check if they're dehydrated. If you pinch together the skin on any part of the body where the skin isn't tight (like, the scruff, piggy "love handles" area, etc.), it should bounce back to its original position almost IMMEDIATELY. If it takes a couple seconds to slowly revert, or it never does, and stays kind of in the same shape, your piggy is dehydrated.
When you "pinch" the skin together, it shouldn't be hard, or painful, or even cause any discomfort, whatsoever. You just manipulate it like you would before you pick up a kitten by the scruff of its neck. Don't actually pick it up, though, haha.
Fortunately, piggies don't get dehydrated as often as hamsters, for example. I don't think it's something you generally have to worry about. But just to ease your worries, in case you weren't sure, that's a test you can easily do with no discomfort to the piggy or yourself.

I can only feed mine 2-4 times a week
Their poo was getting too mushy and they actually had “diarrhea” once from daily lettuce and every other day carrots or bell pepper
So now every 2 days, on cleaning day (I use fleece blankets from Walmart for 7$) I give them 2 big leaves of romaine and the next cleaning they get carrots, or bell pepper, or blueberries or cherry tomatoes

    • @rthatchet
      @rthatchet 4 года назад

Bara littlepig they have unlimited hay and pellets, one of them has lasted 9 years and is still going strong and happy with this method
Romaine only, I don’t even feed green leaf and DEFINITELY not iceberg
I’ll do something like a whole carrot and 2 big leaves of lettuce one day, then 2
Later give them half of a red bell pepper (which is super huge)
But when I was giving them smaller portions (2 baby carrots, 1 huge leaf of lettuce, and maybe some cherry tomatoes or green bell pepper) every single day, their poo was way too soft and stinky
Plus after I cut back they actually have an appetite for veggies
I was giving them daily and they just stopped wanting them.-. Waited a few days and they scarved it down
For my piggies at least, how often I give them veggies has worked great.

The bottles can get messy, my piggies usually drink after eating pellets. I have a collection of different size bottle brushes, the tiniest one goes right down the steel nipple and cleans it no problem. Attention to detail is the way to keeping these bottles hygienic and safe for our Furry Family. And I only use boiled water to soak their bowls and have extra to alternate in-between washes.(no scented soap) We don't want to eat/drink from dirty plates/cups, yeee-uck!!

Saskia, not all of my furbabies are from my breeding mishap. Sadly I lost 7 of my furbabies from that mishap, along with their Daddy last year. Caramel was a gorgeous Abby. He was certainly a attention seeker too. I have Caramels' 3 sisters, who do not 'demand' attention as much as my Himi girl. I have my girls in 2 pens of 8 with a neutered boy and 2 boys in a pen each. My parents have the other 4 boys in 2 pens. My Dad LOVES his boys.

Marla is gorgeous!, URIs' suck, my boy Trig had them every month late last year. If wind got into his lungs, he got sick. He had so many URIs' his lungs became scarred. Trig was the runt of his litter, he was smaller than his brother, who I still have (pet shop buy, I'm glad I bought the boys, someone else may have dumped them or had Trig euthanised due to ill health). Trig had 4 years with me and he was the happiest boy. He had a slight head tilt but was not blind, I would ask him to climb into my hand, which was out in front of him and he would.

This was posted a while ago but still relevant and I want to thank you. I was wondering how much my pigs should eat and whether I feed them too much because I’m so excited to try them on new things and see how they respond.
I feed them sort of how I feed my kids. A few sticks of carrot, capsicum, celery, a large handful of kale, couple apple slices or strawberry tops (don’t have these too often just because I only shop once a week and the punnets last my kids one day so it’s gone anyway). Then I go out to the garden where I grow spinach and pick them a few leaves each, then one each of- lavender, rosemary sprig, mint leaves sprig and pansies. I was a bit concerned because even though they pee a lot, they never drink. I gave them a bowl in case they were unsure how to use the bottle but neither ever get used. I have a camera on my Guinea pig cage so I can spy on them since they’re still a bit shy and not once have a caught them using it. They have hay constantly, pellets 1/4 cup per day and every morning I give them a toilet roll which is shoved full of long grass I pull from the side of the house I never mow. They get a string of sticky weed put up in their cage every morning and they get dandelions as a lap time treat for hand feeding since they love them the most and can’t resist. I’m glad I found this channel and appreciate all the free advice.

  • @lorriemiller6750

When my boys drink they actually will pull on the nozzle of the water bottle as a tendency and they can always eat a little something and are always hungry it is just a matter of degrees and they love grass, romain , parsley, spring mix, cucumber, pea flakes, celery especially the leaves but with things like banana they only want the dried chips and they frequently when giving the stuff like peppers or tomato look at me like what are you giving me this forand turn up their nose at it. When feeding them they actually will step out of the cage to be getting the food right out of my hand and they usually would climb un me to come and get petted and attention besides just the food. They always are extra happy when they get grass and nice salads made especially for small animals that have a lot of different things in them like dandelion, chrysanthemum, peppermint, oat and other grasses and things in them including the leaves too. I always use bottled or filtered water when giving them water because where we live the tap water is not the best so I never give them just tap water at all.

This video has been a life saver to me. As a kid, as much as I tried to research research research, I ended up with a misconception about how much veggies I should feed my piggies. Recently I learned I was feeding them to little. I come back to this video every year or so to make sure I haven't slid back to my old perception just in case, particularly since I have an old boy that's always been on the skinny side.

Sorry, I have admit this to everyone. I got my guinea pig gods at my local PetSmart. I can already hear the negative comments. Luckily, while I did get them there, I actually had a chance to meet one of the local breeders who also works for one of the rescues in the region. The guinea pigs I got came from him and they have done so well.
    Anyways, moving along...
My guinea pigs love the leafy greens, except for the white part. Don't understand why. They also love spring mix lettuce. They aren't too much into the bell peppers, but they love their carrots, tomatoes, and celery. They are so picky but I love them to death. Oh, they won't eat parsley or cilantro. I tried already.
Also, I was thinking of changing their cage up to possibly some dirt and wanted to get your opinion of creating a semi-natural environment for them. Any advice?

Thanks for this. I'm new to the Guinea Pig thing and finding correct info can be a challenge. I typically run on instinct, both for myself and my Critters. So I gathered as much info as I could, then decided by way of my intuition. I've had my (2) boys for 4 weeks and they seem happy and healthy. They were not a bonded pair, so I kept a partition in the cage for a week. When it became obvious they wanted to interact, I took the partition down and watched closely to ensure they weren't fighting. Aside from the typical scrapping you'd expect, they did fine. They still have some days when they are a bit more aggressive but so far no one has been hurt. Finally, thanks for clearing up the water consumption thing. One of the boys drinks a LOT (he is the smaller of the two). The other seems not to need as much. Now that I know, I'll rest a bit easier. I've had dogs my whole life and they, too, have different preferences. Anyway, thanks for the info!

I give them2 of these am and pm. Plus hay and pellets. They love the mixed greenery that smells like peppermint. It’s small animal salad in a bag at Walmart. They are hefty but very healthy. I love to take care of them. I clean their cage 3x a week. They seem very happy seeing all the clean, fluffy fleece. Boy they can pee and poop big time. You could get some fertilizer from the cage. i think, adding more lettuce or a second piece of cucumber, this would have enough for 2 of my piggies - at least I cant recall mine ever eating that much. they also did not like carrot at all, but really loved carrot tops and radish tops! i did give them loads of hay though and whenever grass/clover/dandelion was in season, I'd get a bag full of it on my way back from school (meaning there was never a huge need for feeding tons of veggies, as long as I made sure to supplement enough vitamin c). my oldest got to be six years before she passed, quite a rotund, happy, smart little lady. i miss all of my piggies, but especially her. i have a picture of her sitting on a huge pile of freshly cut grass/herbs with a tiny flower crown on hear head, munching down like a queen, wonderful times! ❤️
