wonderful post. My first trip was in 2004. I been 15 times since and am retiring there or semi retiring there very shortly. While I return and do and see many of the things I enjoy about Thailand, nothing compares with the first visit when so many of the experiences were new. That Thai lady smile. Night life for this small butterfly. Did not spend time in Bangkok on my first trip as I only had 10 days and went straight to Pattaya. Thai baht exchange rate was 44 to 1 in 2004. now 30. Subsequent trips, Bangkok, Ko Samet (was there during the December 2004 tsunami), Sukhothai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang, Sukhothai and the ancient ruins. So much more to still see and do
Thailand is a wonderful country, there is so much to see and do. My first trip was in 1990, I stayed in Bangkok for a few days, did a tour to the north of Thailand and ended in Pattaya. The first time I was in Bangkok I got the feeling I belonged there, it is the only place in the world where I feel at home. Thailand changed a lot since then because of mass tourism but it is still the only place where I like to be. When you want to experience a still authentic part of Thailand, make a tour through the north east of Thailand. There are not many western tourist who visit this part of Thailand and there is a lot to see too, the people are genuinly friendly and there are some stunning national parks.
Thanks for putting this up! A trip down nostalgia lane. My house is in that part of Silom that your filmed and still is today. Strangely, many aspects remain quite the same around Silom until today. Narai hotel looks pretty much the same. Could see Lee Plaza hotel (it later changed to Sofitel and now Pullman G) being built around Decho Rd. Bangkok during the early '90s before the '97 crash was really a great place! Today, everything is different. Attitudes have changed and everything is so expensive now. Worst of all, Chinese tourists everywhere!
i loved bangkok in the 90's, it was fun and very cheap then and everything was possible. I still love the city but it has changed alot. Before most tourist came from Europe, America and Japan. Now there are many Chinese, Russian, Indian and tourists from the middle east. Maybe that's why attitudes have changed.
Nunca me he arrepentido de las cosas que he hecho, pero me he arrepentido de las cosas que no he hecho. la vida es preciosa, así que no olvides vivirla.
Fair enough. The Grand Prix Bar closed in 1991 and it's clearly visible on the Patpong segment. There is also a banner for Safari Bar for a party on April 9,1991 I believe.
I think Patpong was still a blast up until around 2000....at which time Nana Plaza, and eventually Soi Cowboy, eclipsed it...My first trip was April 1995 and 'The Mighty Pong' still had a lot of punch to it.
These were great, roaring times in Bangkok. Plenty of fun to be had. Prices were great, too. Don't forget those huge outdoor restaurants on Ratchadapisek and Bang Na. One could get a beer, for example, anywhere any time of the day. Some Patpong bars open 24 hours. A "seemingly" strong economy. Thailand could do no wrong, it seemed. Then, 1997 Crises was a time of reckoning. Then Mass Transit Systems changed the entire landscape and pricing system. Then, the internet ruined the women. And now the Chinese tourism helped make matters almost intolerable.

I believe the date is incorrect.A couple of clues lead me to believe this is from 1991.
as I wrote in the description there was also footage from 1991, I was there in march/april 1991 too.

that's right. At that time Patpong was still a fun place to go.
