"It's perfectly capable of fending for itself." *little duckling swimming in all its proud glory*
lol, if you say so...
the duck moves out when its only a few hours old, what a rebel.
Cuckoo ducks have some minimum level of class, unlike cuckoo birds.
2:13
Me living at my parent's house after graduating.
oh aren't we all XD
Lol
Literally died laughing
I feel ya.
And 4:30 is that guy who dropped out of uni and now has a six figure income, a paid-for house, three cars and a wife and two kids with a third on it's way...
That cuckoo duck is harmless, once it hatches, its like "Right thanks I'm off, don't wait up." While probably thinking, “Shit gulls, I better get outta here!” The baby gull next to it is like, "Hey where are you going, come back!" 😂
Its crazy how the Duck just knows to leave the nest by pure instinct.
once the gull figured out that there was a duckling in its nest, it would have been "dine in" time!
Yeah. Also the fact that despite being just a few hours old, he's totally self-sufficient.
The cuckoo duck is a savage!! Doesnt mess the other birds or ask for food just dips after an hour.
That's literally the opposite of savage...
'I am sorry my brother, but I must leave. We are not the same you and I.'
"Elder brother, take me with you. The nights will be cold with you"
You guys are so weird
You killed my mother!
No young cuckoo I am your mother
NOOOOOO!!!
Good guy cucko duck
The mama bird's like, "My babies!" :'(
"2 weeks later, the monstrous young cuckoo can no longer fit inside the tiny nest."
Truly it is the goon of the bird kingdom.
kinpin bird
Mr. Attenborough is a national treasure for his knowledge and hard work! Thank you.
true 12 years ago true today.
some things never change
More likely the other way around
"so... bringing up the young is a very demanding business in deed" It sure is for the cuckoo birds and cuckoo duck!s
I am so happy with that cuckoo duck who is brave and angelical enough to live on its own and leave the other baby safe in the generouse nest. So cute babies!
I think the cuckoo ducks are just fine. They just burrow the nest for a few hours and thats it. No harm to the babies
这只黑色小乌击去了所有的幼烏、实为可恶!!!
the Gull chick looks almost sad that the duck left. it’s like “nuuu wait, are you my brothr? come bak D:”
Ok but the baby cuckoo forcibly shoving the warbler eggs out of the nest when they were only days from hatching is BRUTAL O_O
and the mom bird just sit there and watch lol
It's kind of amazing that the mother cuckoo laid her egg after the reed warblers already had their eggs, but her egg still hatched first. Not to mention, the cuckoo chick grows at an alarmingly fast rate. That's an amazing set of adaptations.
I kind of like the story of the cuckoo duck. It's a much kinder sort of parasitism compared to the plain old cuckoo's, and it even reminds me of the Ugly Duckling story, only, it's actually a duckling that doesn't fit in with gulls, not a cygnet that doesn't fit in with ducklings. :)
It's likely that the pre-conditions of becoming a brood parasite are: 1) you're somewhat bigger than the host, 2) you can internally incubate your eggs a bit longer before laying.
Having earlier, larger chicks is the key to success in brood parasites. They grow their eggs internally for a day longer to get the headstart.
Is it classed as parasitism when it steals the nest or is there another term? Sorry I'm a nerd.

Fostering
@@ophiolatreia93
I thought it is not. Nest theft is a behavior of competition, parasitism can be seen as a behavior of predation.
Felt so bad when mama bird went after her eggs :(
Baby gull: Are you my mommy?
Baby duck: Hell no jackass, now Im outta here!

*This is the Intelligent design*
I just adooooooooooooore sir Attenborough! The enthusiastic way in which he describes nature and his humble nature are so remarkable. He really respects nature and sees that we are a part of the animal kingdom and not the other way around. He really is an amazing person.
Cuckoo duck: "Right I'm out. Smell ya later"
Gull chick: "Wait what"
The cuckoo, nature’s ultimate freeloader.
This is fascinating. Back to studying for Animal Diversity 2, exam in 2 days.
cuckoo birds are like some people of the bird world
Some birds can actually tell their young from a cuckoo by teaching it a secret code or their vocals.
oww my gushhh!!! soooo... cant explain!!! whats so very ....unbelievable....
Yes, she is a conniving little bird! LOL She is smart and knows what she is doing. :)
i always heard his voice on in documentarries ang wondering who he is im glad i see him, his beautiful voice perfect for docu.
Me too
Anyone else here after watching *Vivarium*
Lmao yeah bro, weird movie had to watch an explanation video on here then got carried away to watch this 😂🙌
@@nitropticshhh confused until wathing this
Absolutely! Loved the movie and won't hesitate to watch it again and again!
HE HAS AN AWESOME VOICE!!!!
We've all met a Cuckoo type of person at least once in our lives
Funny how the literal heavy lifting is left to the blind helpless baby cuckoo.
(Yes, I do in fact KNOW and UNDERSTAND why it has to be that way. Just making a witty observation.)
Astonishing how many people in the comments are judging these birds for not having a human conscience. Like... wot?
Yeah. Birds don't give a shit about morals. They evolved from dinosaurs. And these birds are too stupid to tell that they're feeding an imposter. Lmao
Morons everywhere .
I fxccking hear the voice of the boy shouting in vivarium
I am really amazed on how these birds behave. And even at a young age they develop the ability to survive
Ducks laying their eggs in the nests of other species of ducks is actually very common. What's cool about the cuckoo duck is that it commensalizes a bird in a totally different order.
LOL the cuckoo is too funny! Pushing the eggs out of the nest like that. Born cunning.
I shouldn't have laughed so hard when the baby cuckoo threw the other eggs out. The momma warbler is just watching it like, "No, don't do that Junio-- *egg falls out* OH SHIT. *goes after it*"
cuckoos are f*cking awesome
i agree
After seeing this all I can say is that evolution is weird but its amazing
Duck: "Well....this is awkward"
Seagull: "....yep"
Kind of amazing how there are birds smart enough to solve puzzles and then there are birds too stupid to realize the chick in their nest that is twice the size of them isn't their kid.
There's actually a hypothesis that they _do_ realize the cuckoos aren't their offspring, but they put up with it solely because the parents will retaliate if they refuse. It is called, I kid you not, the Cuckoo Mafia Hypothesis.
@@CJCroen1393 the cuckoo parent retaliates? I thought they left the area after laying the egg. But I know next to nothing about them.
Impressive name for a theory, though.
@@GreenDinoRanger To my knowledge, they're not 100% sure on this, but experimentation on nests targeted by brood parasites have involved cuckoos and brown-headed cowbirds destroying nests that had their eggs removed in some way.
I lold when that duckling popped up XD
There is something unspeakably horrifying about the cuckoo life cycle.
Lol at the duck part. but you have to do whats needed to ensure your survival
I think the answer is a lil simpler and derived from the benefits of having someone else build the nest and sit on them. Building a nest and incubating/defending their eggs for a month takes considerable time and energy that could be spent foraging 4 food. Also during that time , sitting on the eggs makes them vulnerable to predation by ambush. Lastly, the seagulls may also be more equipped to defend their nest, and hence increase the survival of the eggs. Makes sense to me anyways :)
wow. cheeky buggers.
Woww.. cuckoo bird is like a parasite.
+Reds Maroon Brood parasite.
+Charmaine Rice which is rood of them

1:52. Me pushing my homework off the cliff in my dreams🤫
With the duck one, I bet this is where the idea came from for "the ugly duckling" story
Brilliant footage and great commentary.
WhEre arE my TeNdies REeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
EricWW2 I don't think these people appreciate you.... That was seriously hillarious!
Ah this is the guy Mitchell and Webb were makign fun of.
You don't seem to realize the fact that the comments section of a youtube video on cuckoos is not much of a soapbox.
I LOVE THE CUCKOO
The innocent foster parents.
#8 is my lucky number! Yes!
That's cool...I just read Battle of the Generations chapter in the selfish gene and wanted to see it in action. It's good to see that Dawkin's book is still as popular as ever.
An honest freeloader XD
ZOMG! that bird it TOTALLY AWESOME.
yes
I would not want to play Mario Party with a cuckoo bird.
Prob stole the warblers car and took it on a joy ride too. Messed up the seat postion and took a dump in the back seat.
Here comes David with another bedhead
The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins talks extensively about cuckoos, so it's nice to see them in video. Especially with Attenborough explaining it.
You may think this is a nature show. But in fact it is about humans.
Christian Schmidt im just glad there no cuckoo birds in the amazon rainforest.
PhilOsSlash why did you have to ruin it?
true, instead of cuckoo, we just say ernie the milkman
@PhilOsSlash haha like how the white nation hundreds of years back went to immigrant lands stole their belongings, killed some, raped some and enslaved some, more like pay back. it hurts when the tables turn n you are no longer at the receiving end, funny.
How does this man not lose his temper while narrating this?
Because he understands how nature works?
I don't care much for money, I just want to have enough to hire Attenborough to narrate a day of my life.
Good 🦆! Bad cuckoo bird!
I'm in your nest, stealin' all your foods
Life is amazing
Just watched Richard Dawkins talking about Cuckoos and had to see it for myself. Man I love the internet :)
Yes !! Came here after Richard Dawkins lecture... wow
Are you still alive ?
I have watched David for 25 years and met him in person...i assure you he knows every word he reads and probably wants to say more but for a time limit. Of course he's using a script...he's doing voice overs. Voice overs he WROTE
The gull is so nice! letting the baby ducks ride on them
the duck is so independent and mature, meanwhile the other cuckoo is so lazy and fat and greedy, lol!
So cheeky!
So a Coocoo duck is basically a temporary foster chick... the gull is used as a surrogate incubator... interesting!
What video is this from? It isnt LIFE, is it? And I know it's not Planet Earth... Cool video! The gull hatching a duckling was almost comical!
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! =D
@BBCWorldwide Those amazing birds would be nicer if we could watch them at 480p, or 720p. But 480p is a minimum. You have the tapes, filmed in HD, so please, give us a scratch!?!? Thank you.
that is so mean!poor those eggy :3
Lol, the male cuckoo duck looks so shady when Attenborough mentions it.
As if it was watching to make sure the duckling hatches before realizing it was noticed and swims away from the scene...
Cucko ducks are bosses! Able to fend for itself and support itself right after being born! Not like me hahaaha.
I wonder if that's what happened in the Ugly Duckling story.......
so true.
at least the ducks didnt kill its foster parent's children
So many amazing animals,
How does the cuckoo know it had to get rid of the others eggs?
There isn't a 100% success rate for all cuckoos... I'd be willing to guess that even 50% would be good for a cuckoo, but this is beyond what I'm willing to look into right now...
Amazing
I SWEAR, THIS IS HILARIOUS. LOLOLOLOL. Stupid fat baby going "MOM, MOM, MOM!" and the silly duckling escaping!!!!! And the 2 babies looking at each other....Nature is so funny I swear!! Where are all the stupid father birds?!?!?!??!
8 is my lucky number! Perfect!
Never hated a animal more
I'm stunned the mother bird leaves the nest while incubating.
A lot of birds might switch off between the male and female incubating them. But every here and there you'll get some lag time between them, because both parents have to eat. So Cuckoos will actively watch a nest for that time window. Though, even then they are not always succesful. If they're too early, or get caught, the hosts can and will abandon the nest or reject the egg.
Just give me £500,000.00 & you can have as much popcorn as you like!
great video thanks
Very good video!
this is so cool
Yes all those birdies are cute. :)
