Mixed states is why it took me until age 44 to be properly diagnosed as bipolar 1 after being hospitalized for mania with psychotic features 6 months ago.
Even as an MD with an undergraduate degree from Yale in behavioral psychology, I could never adequately describe the hodgepodge of moods and thoughts, impulsivity/distractibility/ ocd/anxiety/somatic (flu-like/migraine) symptoms that can be characterized as the tired but wired “mixed mood state”.
Mania has never felt “euphoric” to me, and depression rarely felt “sad” or even suicidal, just numb. Like an overwhelmingly heavy wet blanket smothering your will to be productive and get anything done, but for me it was never that I lost my will to live.
So, in fact mixed manic-depressive states are far more “dysphoric”.
Great content. I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you’re living well Angel.

I've been in denial about my BD for years. Mostly because I was never explained anything about the mixed states. I had to educate myself on this. Thank you for sharing your story. My experience with mixed states is absolutely awful. I feel like I'm literally falling apart and my mind is melting(super high anxiety, paranoia, racing thoughts and slow speech). I too, try my hardest not to shop or impulse buy stuff I don't need.

Your comment about the million dollars is so on point. I experience a lot of mixed episodes and I don’t have a coping skill in particular. It varies. I will excessively cook and bake (calling it meal prep) I will cook everything in my house. My fridge so full. But once it’s all done. I don’t want to eat any of it. And end up throwing most of it away a week later. Or I go the opposite and don’t cook for myself. And live off of fast food and take out that I don’t even like or normally eat. So not really positive coping. But. It’s what I do.

I'm currently in the process of getting diagnosed with bipolar, and I think I have had two mixed episodes each of them did not end well. When I tried to explain this to the psychiatrist she said "that doesn't make sense" which made me doubt the fact there was anything wrong, but listening to this has made me relate. I'm now seeing a new psychiatrist so hopefully things go better with him, and I don't feel like I'm making everything up in my head.

Thank you so much for this! We need more voices helping to not only decrease the stigma but sharing experiences that help others who suffer feel less alone. I appreciated this as I’m currently in a mixed episode and being able to say “omg it’s not just me!”does wonders for helping me to feel a lot less out of it.

I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar mixed episodes rapid cycling. I have psych motor agitation with my mixed episodes. I too feel like I want to peel my skin off during a mixed episode! The worst feeling ever.
I will also pace the house, rubbing my hands, shaking my legs..sometimes hitting my legs or head trying to release that feeling from me. Then crying and feeling like this will never end. Up n down up n down within minutes or hours. Lamictal has helped a lot!

That explanation of mixed episode is so accurate. I didn't even realise that's what I'm going through. I get a mixed episode for a day or two before moving into my full on depressive period. Those two days are hell. I try to sedate myself through drinking or sedative antihistamines to just try sleep the days away. Thanks for an informative video!

I had not been taking enough of the mood stabilizers (Lamictal, Trileptal) when Spring sprung around 🤯 but it definity helped me recover because Effexor was NOT ready for the seasonal change, and I swear to you, it started RIGHT at the equinox

Ha!!! 😂 @ Effexor was NOT ready. I take venlafaxine as well and I feel you, the mixed state is… uncomfortable- you’re wired but tired.
I just started lamotrigine yesterday so fingers crossed that Lamictal keeps things even without flattening me out like onlazepine (an antipsychotic) did.

Angel, thank you for making these videos. I get a lot from more personal experiences of other bipolar people in their own words. I'm actually thinking about starting my own little RUclips channel myself but I'm hesitant.
A few years ago, I finally figured out my mixed states on my own and had to describe them to my pdoc. They are excruciating and the most difficult to figure out. Also can be the most dangerous if I don't catch myself early. I'm on the mood stabilizer oxcarbazepine and my pdoc allows me to adjust my dosage as my moods shift because it does so well for me. When I know I'm especially hypomanic or in a serious mixed state I can increase my meds to keep me stable. It works very well for me. Also have to watch my caffeine a bit and my attitude in general.
Lots of folks are aware of depression and hypomanic/mania but mixed states need to be discussed a lot more. Thanks again for your efforts. Very helpful for me and I'm sure many others.

The first time ever that I’ve heard someone explain mix episodes so accurate. I cried.... Having mixed episodes AND fibromyalgia.... what a combination. 😞 Having the desire to do a lot, but my body says no. Then I get depressed. That’s one of my great triggers. Then I get a mixed episode. This happens «all the time». Coping skills.... trying to not spending too much money (difficult), sleep or not sleep all the day.... it doesn’t help that much. 😕 I don’t want to see anyone (I live alone), in the same time I wish someone would be there to give me a hug and hold me really hard. So I don’t fall and would do something drastic. My english is not very good. Hope you understand. Keep up with the good work. Love your videos.

I'm having a mixed episode. It feels like the first time I really feel it so much - like even in my eyes. My vision feels so hyperfocused. I've been home alone for 3 months with the Covid distancing and such fear of getting sick but I think lack of everything is ending up being a bipolar issue and potential crisis as time goes on and this feels like it will never end. I keep thinking it's only 3 months out of the next 12 or 18 and this is not going to end well. I just got a new credit card so I'm giving it to a friend to hold. I feel horrid. Tired, exhausted but can't stop moving in bed. Not sleeping or eating much and not hungry but totally exhausted. I end up doing a lot of hand wringing which just ends up painful after a while but can't stop. Thank God I'm not needing to pace like when I've been manic or at the top of hypomanic before. I'm really glad I'm not "I can't get out of bed" depressed but the longer I don't feel safe outside and I stay home alone, the more dangerous this feels like it could get. Not like in a kill myself way - just in a I'm home alone, nobody is keeping an eye on me and who knows you know? If I get really psychotic will I or anyone know? It's a scary time but everyone is having a hard time so it's kind of like I just need to shut up about it. Even our therapists are living thru what we are. It's a hard time to have a mental illness get out of control. For me, going inpt is not an option. It's the worst place for me in the world. And it's no longer treatment. It's just coloring and laying in bed. I'm better off home alone. Anyway, thanks. Sorry this is long. Having a tough night. Thanks for coming up in search. It's helped me tonight. 👍

Thank you for your honesty, I am just researching and trying to find out if I have bipolar. It's not easy as many symptoms are unclear to me. Even to differentiate how I feel is sometimes so hard. But I really see myself in the coping mechanisms you show. For me it show in being forgetful, structure less, meeting to many different people, shopping to much and not connecting deeply with my kids and husband. It's so frustrating as it repeats and repeats. Mania, mixed episode, mania, mixed episode and then depression. That he cycle that kept repeating since some months. I want to go to a day care clinic, but he waiting time takes 4 months. I guess until then I just have to try and inform myself best and try to just cope with how it is. Videos like yours help me trimendously.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar a few days ago. I have had suicidal thoughts thinking how to end my life. I was feeling I want to cry everyday even when I'm at work my eyes filled suddenly with tears. This feeling lasts for maybe 2 to 3 weeks. Then yesterday, I was more hyped talking a lot with my wife .. discussing several plans like what I want to buy, where to travel on December, etc.. but at the same day I was still having the feeling of hopelessness and every time I look at the future, it just seemed like nothing. And I'm still avoiding any contact with people except my wife and my kids. I also realized that I really get upset with any noise as you said. I have not started the medication as I'm worried that it makes me worse. The good thing I have my wife's support.

    • @AngelHawks
      @AngelHawks  2 года назад

Medication can be scary but it can be very helpful too. Having Bipolar is the same as having any other medical condition and therefore, medication is key. I'm so glad you have your wife❤. Stay strong and just know that the depressed or mixed mood will pass. You are not alone.

I don’t really know what is wrong with me, I have watched lots of RUclips videos on depression and bipolar disorder but I’m still very confused, I’m sure of depression but I’m not sure about having bipolar disorder but I feel very excited, too excited for no reason and even to my own surprise while sometimes I feel very agitated and try so much to control myself then cause I will definitely get so mad at a friend, loose control and say hurtful things that I will later regret
I feel very dark sometimes and picture myself in my head committing suicide or hurting myself in one way or the other, it’s so frustrating living like this, I’m 19 and my childhood experience wasn’t a good one, I can’t remember when I started feeling like but I can remember feeling this way for 7 years
now and it keeps hurting me since then without knowing what was wrong with me, i just came across the definition of the term depression this year and i realized I’m suffering from it cause I have all the symptoms, but I’m not sure of bipolar even though I have most of the symptoms, I really feel so lost, dark and hopeless sometimes for no reason but no one understands me
They keep telling me i chose to be sad and I can be happy if I want, how can I when I feel comfortable with the sadness sometimes when I feel normal i find myself missing the feeling of being sad and down
I really don’t know if I’m still going to be ok cause I hate this feeling and at the same time I love it and that’s the frustrating part of it all🥺🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭

How often you can have that mixed episodes, it seems my partner has it like 5 days in a week then fine for two days and again. He is untreated, only for Adhd which I dont believe he has ( he should have new assessement soon - after 15years) now on stimulants Elvanse which I think triggered his mixed episodes, too. But your feelings sounds very similar like what he is going through unfortunally he has little kids and its impossible to co-parent with him in such a bad conditions :-(

    • @AngelHawks

Mine come and go in a similar way but it sounds like your partner has episodes a lot more often than I do. However, with Bipolar you can't compare one person with the next. Bipolar is a very difficult disease to manage and should be done with help from professionals ie; psychiatrists, psychologists or counseling services. Best wishes and thank you for watching ❤.
