Don't generalize if you don't know the whole story. "How often do you beat your wife and kids?" See that? That's how it feels. What if you're not married? What if you don't have kids? What if you have never assaulted a human being in your life? Don't know the whole story? Don't make a fool out of yourself by making judgements about stories you know nothing about. "Store it properly?" Most storage places don't even allow storage of non running vehicles (I know, unlike you I actually checked) which begs the question, if it were running why would I need to put it in storage? Not everyone owns a private garage, but thousands of people drive cars they refuse to maintain, meanwhile you're sitting there judging people you don't know or their situations. Disgustingly hypocritical.

Jonny has what any good mechanic must have in order to work on about any vehicle: mechanical empathy. In simple terms, he has "touch" - he instinctively knows how much (or how little) force he can apply to things without damage and his mind works logically enough so that he can figure out complex mechanisms and how they work. Nobody can teach those traits; you either have them in you or you don't, regardless of any training you may undergo. Mechanical inclination - *feel* - is a naturally-born trait.

I think it's awesome that the owner of the old 325 wants to restore it and daily drive it. It could have easily been hauled off and become a brick of steel, rubber, and plastic. If it means that much to the owner and they are willing to spend real money to restore, more power to them!
The thing that bugs me about it is, if it meant that much to them why did they let it get to this condition in the first place? Makes no sense to leave a car neglected in a field for 13 years then want to restore it to factory new condition?
The replacement part is a previously repaired one I believe. Ferrari apparently only sell them crimped one to the lines complete. Your old one may also have some value, as it can be refurbished the same way. Nice job fixing it. Mad system.
The factory pistons are crimped on the lines but a company developed a way to remove them , rebuild them, and machine them to be serviceable. Normalguy supercar did one on an f430 recently. They dremeled out the area that’s crimped on the aluminum housing.
That doesnt sound like something Enzo would say... He was notorious for caring very little for his street cars and even less for the people who actually bought them whom he pretty much considered useless snobs. He was a racing guy first and foremost and only cared about his racing cars.
Excellent job on piston Johnny, they do rebuild the o rings also, but to find someone reliable is very very difficult, thank u from nyc, your youtube channel was given to a few of my friends, they all love it,
Gotta say, with all of the issues that you, Hoovie, and Car Wizard have been showing with power tops, I am actually LOVING my manual top! People talk crap, but I don't have all of these issues to deal with!
Normal Guy Supercar just did this same repair on an F430 top. Took the part out and ground the lines out the same as you did here, and sent the part to be repaired and have the serviceable line modification made that you have on the part you got here. The part you got has already been rebuilt and modified at some point. I think from the factory they come all as one big mess of lines crimped in and they want you to literally replace everything.
I did this same exact job on that cylinder, on my 2005 CLK500 Convertible...in my underground garage of my apartment building 😩. Paid about $300 for a rebuilt & better parts cylinder, sent mine back to him. The guy who rebuilds them told me...Mercedes uses cheap gaskets & they are inevitable to leak no matter what. He puts much better rubbers & etc The job wasn't that difficult to be honest, just some attention to detail. Thank God I didn't have to drill anything 😅. The lines go right back in, the cylinders on the mercedes are definitely more modern I was just happy the lines didn't go bad, or it didn't leak hydraulic fluid all over my light interior. When I was done though my back was in shambles 😭 lol
Definitely have old cylinder rebuilt. It’s only few dollars for couple seals. Most likely a valuable part to have on hand. Props to J&J! Watch JR Go went there on a episode.
There is exactly the same convertible top hydraulic system on the F430 spyder, the lines are pinched on the cylinders and therefore the cylinders are not serviceable. There's companies out there that, when rebuilding these cylinders, modify them to make them actually serviceable, like the one you have. There's a video on that published last month on the Normal Guy Supercar channel (it was actually exactly the same cylinder that went bad on his 430). You should probably send the bad one you have to get rebuild and modified, you'll have a spare.
They showed this on Normal Guy Supercar. There’s a company that does the the retrofitting of the cylinders. Send your old one to them. It was on the 430 they are fixing up.
it's funny the sentiment value is not that high when the car is sitting in the field. Would make it a lot easier to restore if it would at least sit in a barn or something.
Respect to the e36 owner for wanting to bring the car back to it's former glory. Once all sorted it will be a much better investment than buying anything in this crazy car market.... Just keep it out of the field to rot this time.
Man, seeing all the motions of that top as it operates gives me anxiety. You should take a crack at figuring out the moaning sound on Hoovie's Diablo 😅

Hi Jonny. So after all that mate, you're gonna sell it?
Nothing like the potential of having hydraulic type fluid in your face at 60MPH.
Mercedes uses hydraulic pistons on their convertible tops as well and they will just pour fluid on top of you when the seals go bad.
Persistence pays off ✔✔✔✔✔✔✔✔✔✔
Same problem at Mercedes R230. But you can disassemble the zylinder and replace the broken seal without playing with the lines.
That's a triumph!!!

Was it not possible to remove the snap ring and piston? Possibly just a torn o-ring.
