  • I'm in the kitchen ALL the time. So it's important that my appliances work and work for a long time! We were so terrified to take the leap and get a drawer microwave because the cost was high and the reviews were split. So here's our experience. Hopefully it's helpful if you're on the market for a new microwave or kitchen remodel!

You’re wrong that there is no difference between a hood and microwave vent. Over the range vents don’t do a good job compared to dedicated hoods.

My first house had an over the range microwave. My last house had a microwave "cabinet" with doors in front of it. My current house has a weird cubby under the counter for a microwave. Basically, it's a spot for a drawer microwave. I'm not sure what to do. So far, the microwave over the range was the most functional. Unfortunately, instead of a hood, I have a false cabinet with a built-in vent. So, I need to do some cabinet work or just go with it and buy a drawer microwave. I hope this doesn't turn into a $1500 item for the scrap pile.

Where does all the greasy air from the microwave vent when it's in the island?

Not having a microwave over the range is definitely preferable, but it is common in small kitchens. That is my situation and what is really unsatisfying is that steam from cooking can condense on the bottom of the microwave and then drip into the food that is cooking. The steam can also interfere with the electronics behind the control pad.

All really good points. I’ve had a microwave over my range my entire life so I definitely understand the pros and cons! Its not always realistic to move it with spacing challenges

Great details about the microwave, and as an engineer, I especially appreciate the background about the patent and how that affects the price differential between different brands.
