PANASONIC LUMIX GH6: 100 Megapixels In High Resolution Mode - Hand Held!

  • The GH6 is famous for its video qualities but it's also a powerhouse for still photography. In this video I put high resolution mode to the test. As if a class-leading 25 megapixel sensor wasn't enough, now I can shoot a hundred megapixel file. And thanks to the amazing 7.5 stops of image stabilisation, I can do it hand-held! Watch as I set the camera up for high-res shooting and share some results from my tour in Western Australia.

    This is crazy! I've been using GH6 for about 2 years now for video 90% of the time, and only today I discover it can shoot photos at 100MP. Thanks so much for this tutorial!

    A great job explaining this feature on our GH6. The advantage of shooting in high resolution mode is definitely the creative versatility that comes with being able to crop heavily in post while still maintaining a usable file size for print 💪

    I sold my Nikon Z7ii because with the gh6 I no longer needed it as the stills are so good. The gh6 is imo an underrated stills camera, probably because it is seen as more of a video powerhouse, but it is more than just a video tool, it's a fantastic all round hybrid camera.

    Thanks for the video. What I'm looking for is information on the lens quality that is needed to make the high res mode work best. Do we need Leica lenses, or will the standard lines from Panny (and others) work just as well? I can tell you I got my GH6 last year while working with a client's Phase One 150MP camera. And testing the two in the limited time I had available, showed the differences to be amazingly small. And I'll add, that was while testing with the 12-60/3.5 kit lens!

      No and I don't think it will or could, because the image stabilisation - while pretty amazing - is not as powerful as the GH6.

    Is there difference in quality between hi-res pictures taken handheld and on a tripod?

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Год назад +1

      Sorry for the slow reply, I just got back from yet another tour. If the light is good and I am shooting at fast shutter speeds, I see no difference at all. If the light is low and the shutter speed is slower, then the IOS can only take so much and the photos can come out soft. That's when you have a definite advantage with a tripod. Also the tripod option is the only one that allows both options for handling moving subjects.

    • @naturesimagephotography

      Yeah it's pretty heavy on the battery, around 350 shots to a charge. A lot less than my G9. So get a spare battery too if you can afford it.

    I'm using my gh6 as my main photo camera. Recently discovered my g9 is severely effected by shutter shock, so bad that my gh6 with f0.95 glass is making sharper images than my g9 with f2.8 glass. Absurd. The gh6 though is a revelation

    Are there any downsides leaving handheld mode on? I'm going to assume battery usage because of IBIS but is there a qualitative difference? I typically just leave mine on.

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 Год назад

      I'm assuming you mean downsides to leaving it on WHILE ON A TRIPOD? O have read, not specific to the GH6, that leaving stabilization on while on a tripod can allow the camera to try to interpret and correct for things that don't need correction. Best to avoid this. However infrequently it may happen.

    I have a GH6 and mostly used it for video but I have started to use it for photography instead of my GH5. The quality is quite a bit better on the GH6 with better looking colours. I have tried Hand Held High-Res in RAW with Simul Record Normal Shot ON and comparing both images, sometimes the 100MP images don't look as sharp as the normal 25MP do and they sometimes show weird artefacts around the edge of some objects in the images. A few times I have gotten very good 100MP images handheld so I am not sure what is going on. I will have to try High Res mode with a tripod and see if I can get any better results as I haven't taken many shots in High-Res mode yet.

      Ck and see if the lenses you are using are able to sinc with the cameras ibis

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro Год назад

      @@garybrown9719 I assume they did, none of the lenses I used had IS on them so had to rely only on the GH6 IBIS. I can't check as I traded in my GH6 for the new Panasonic S5II. I think though that some of the softness I was getting could have been down to the main lens I was using, an Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8. I don't think it was sharp enough for the GH6 and some of the good shots I got with high res were taken with an Olympus 60mm f/2.8 macro lens and Panasonic 9mm f/1.7 which were pretty sharp on the GH6.

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 Год назад

      @@DynamixWarePro It begs the question of what required lens quality we need for this feature to work well. No direction from Panny on that. Do we need the Leica quality for it to work at its best? Almost certainly, vintage lenses aren't a good match for this.

    • @pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995
      @pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995 Месяц назад

      @@lanceevans1689 I don't know if vintage lenses wouldn't be a good match... as I understand the camera has a build-in photo stitching feature, so 8x 25MP photos are taken and stitched automatically while moving the IBIS. Wouldn't this mean that sensor and lens quality are accumulated? by the way, pretty sure there are some vintage lenses out there that are sharper then many modern kit lenses...

    • @lanceevans1689
      @lanceevans1689 Месяц назад

      @@pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995 as the resolving power of the sensor goes up, so does the need for a higher resolving lens. Older lenses have beautiful imagery, but modern computer designed lenses have higher resolution.

    Hi I am very interested in how big you can print a 100 megapixel image from a GH6 camera and have an acceptably sharp photograph. Have you printed any large photographs and how big were they ?

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Год назад +1

      I didn't have an answer for you. So I put a high-res photo onto a USB and showed it to the lab at the camera store where I work. They said they could do almost any size their machine is capable of...wall posters up to a couple of metres wide. And possibly more if the machine could handle bigger paper.

      I used to work in print.. and normally things are in 300 dpi .. so the 100 mega pixel would be 70x100 like shown in the video .. but often if you print much larger then that you are not really printing 300 dpi anyways .. so i would say that 100 megapixel would really make you able to do almost any kind of big print.
