Now that you bring it up, it's kinda empathy. I was so afraid Master Shao Wen Yu would feel disappointed or even insulted if I wasn't 20 minutes early that I never missed a class. Always reviewing an old form I knew before class. In hindsight it never occurred to me that he did not expect that of other students. But I felt I had to do it for him. In fact, most days I was the only one in the gym, sometimes two others until like 40 people arrived around class starting. I used to joke "I am going to church" when I went to Wushu. That is how I felt about it. He would sit with his office door open, squinting one eye at me while I practiced Chinese broadsword alone.
Living in China you probably know Sifu can be a loaded term, unlike Lao Shir which is a great form of respect meaning teacher. But he had me call him Sifu and kinda vibed that Obi Wan Kenobi to my Luke. Now that I ranted, it's obvious I have some very good memories of that decade.
Actually, the word "dojo" is a religious word. It's a meditation room in a Buddhist temple, Grasshopper. "Dojo" literally means "the place of the Way".

the third one, the one about helping others and mutual aid can also be translated as "Altruism". it's akin to heroism, philanthropism, being charitable, etc. but not the same. Altruism comes first and then it spawns other helping -isms. because it first takes an altruist to be heroic, philanthropic, charitable, a savior, an ubermensch, a gigachad, etc. Without feeling altruism first then someone might be doing the rest of the things for other reasons like personal gain, virtue signalling, following dogma, following trends, etc. lol

The Bushido Code or the Chivalric code are very similar in that they serve two purposes. 1) Police their own members who are cocky hotheads in their 20s to prevent them from going on a r@pe and looting rampage. You give a young man that kind of power and it can be very dangerous and hard to control. The samurai could cut your head off if you disrepected them on the street. The knights could "have their way" with poor girls but not wealthy girls. 2) Market yourself as something noble. Virtue signaling. If we look at the history of BJJ and the Gracies, they came up as pure bullies. Two of the founding Gracies ganged up on and put Rufino do Santos, rather than individually face him in the ring, in the hospital with permanent injuries and bribed the judge to release them after conviction. They talk about being respectful, but many of them are not.
Hey coach! I have a question spurred on by the blindfolded speedbag practice: You've said a few times that you rely largely on your peripheral vision to get around - so how do you aim your strikes with that blindspot you've got? If that comes off as ignorant I mean no harm, I just don't know much about being partially sighted.
What's the funky submission at 5:15? Looks awesome, reminds me of your "7 Goofy submissions from BAD positions (that you probably shouldn’t use)" video.
That’s the buggy choke… the silliest submission ever invented. And this was the only time I have ever tapped to it, in spite of many, many people trying it on me. Tapping to a buggy choke is a mark of shame and weakness. Hence I included that clip during the section on humility.
Hello coach. Was wondering what's happening with your exercises of 'getting out of wet paper bag', you stated that would do progressive overload method, what's the progress?

@RamseyDewey Question . I’ve been reading jack dempsey book and it’s helped my punching power so much. My question is should I study a Far Eastern martial art such as wing chun or karate as they might have a different technique to creating a powerful punch . There’s apparently a Japanese term for a karate strike called ikken hissatsu meaning one strike one kill . Is there anything I’m missing out on just by using Dempsey method ? I’m an mma fighter . My name is ares from England . Hope you can respond and explain on RUclips as I watch your channel a lot . Thank you
I agree with all the tenets. But in my experience, the ones that make a big deal of them are the ones that don't seem to actually embody them. My TKD gym made us repeat the tenets, but I'm not sure they really understood them, they just wanted belts. They never say this stuff in my Muay Thai gym, but through respectful sparring we build them and embody these tenets way more than any TKD club that parrots them I've been in
Good question man. I train in Iaido and there’s some Japanese characters on the wall in my dojo. I’ll reply to my comment here for you when I find out their translation.

@Ramsey Dewey. Hello I am 16 years old and want to start with mma/boxing/wrestling training (I haven’t quite decided yet but want to try out as much as possible) in a few months. Should I lift weights and do calisthenics during this time or just wait until I have a few months of training fighting and the lift weights?
Hey Ramsay, do you have any advice for me? I've been working out for a few years now everyday doing something, but i feel like i am not getting stronger doing the same exercises. Especially my flexibility is absolutly not increasing for the last year. I want to get into front splits and middle splits. Currently i am focused on the front split and stretch at least 1h everyday and still not even close to the bottom. Am i doing something wrong? All the advice i have read has gotten my nowhere and i am very discouraged to work on my flexibility anymore cause it seems like i am getting nowhere. What should i do?
An era ago, laconic expressions of sportsmanship virtues (or entire slogans, for that matter) in a local language being inscribed inside training areas of all kinds used to be a fairly common thing. These days people often see them as pretentious, insincere or "cringe". Admittedly, some people will say the same about cool-looking foreign symbols that mean nothing to most people looking at them here, so there's that.
Running. Mice, deer, rabbits, etc. do it all the time. Now for "self offense", Colt 45, and not the Billy D Williams' favorite drink. The other Colt 45.

As far as humility goes I don't personally think that a lot of the people who go to McDojos get caught up in power fantasies and assume that there style of martial art is the end all be all that would get them out of all potentially dangerous situations no matter what and that it might not possibly have any form of limitations are exactly the types of individuals who I would be categorizing as humble people. And I don't think that the McDojo runners who get caught up with believing in there own phony bologna are the most humble people either.
I hadn't put much thought into it but the kids dojo has four plaques up which say. The only other stuff he has on his walls are the trophies and medals won by his daughter and his Dan certificates and accreditations with various Karate Federations. I know he is a seventh day Adventist no classes on Saturday day time but they do attend competitions on Sundays. This is Bangalore Karnataka. Not the most restrictive place in India. But still India which now has a right wing religious government opposed to non Hindu religions. Otherwise he doesn't talk about his faith to the kids and they respond to the usual japanese commands and on the Shomen wall he has photos of the previous masters they know the founder of the style is Kenwa Mobuni and can interpret the logo of the dojo because he explains the symbols to them from time to time. I did both and I think its just wise to study as many arts as possible and take everything that works for your body type and goals. You train mma so youve probably been hit with a verticle punch during boxing sparring.
Another aspect of "mutual aid" is the willingness (and courage and humility and respect) to RECEIVE help.
4 tenets of da streetz:
- cowardice
- insolence
- discourteous
- arrogance
Insolence with those you perceive weaker, servility with others
Unearned confidence should have a place.
