Read a book in my early 30's called "The millionaire next door" It changed the way I thought about life and money. I just achieved my 20 year goal set that year. Even made it a few months early. I am proof it that it is hard to do but it can be done. Time, discipline, and setting goals yearly for 1yr., 5 yrs, 10 yrs and 20yrs out kept us on track. Found an amazing new hobby along the way. You know as a guy that's turning 26 in a few hours I feel so motivated from this even more! I struggled with school and then after school I saw how important my life was so I got a B average in college into cyber security, got my credit right, didnt splurge and then saved my money bought 2 duplexes that needed a lot of repairs and got income after repairs were done (1 year)...Now I'm getting my health right finally...I wouldn't have been able to get the mindset and the dedication without seeing people like me doing the same. My goal is to retire at 45....but only time will tell....Even if I dont hit a million or more on a consistent basis I will be happy because my kids will be taught what I wasnt and will have the steps that I didnt learn until 22 at an earlier age.....My vision is to see my family's life better then where it started....Thanks for all of those who were reading this.
The advice on the car extends to almost everything you own. If you don't own a car, do not think this advice does not apply to you. Those who are millionaires, on their way to becoming so, did not buy flashy clothes or shoes or jewelry. Their personals were completely utilitarian. Their car got them from A to B. Their clothes simply kept them clothed. Nothing designer. Nothing high end. The jewelry was probably nearly non-existent because it was in no way a necessity. The advice about not caring is a double-edged sword. You need to not care what the general public thinks about what you're doing or what you look like (see above). But you need to work within the bounds of society, and that's just tough. Millionaires did this. When Bill Gates had a high profile meeting when he was just starting out, he didn't show up in ripped jeans and a t-shirt and say, "Too bad, this is who I am." But he also didn't go out and spend $500 on new duds. He put on cheap business casual and a tie and looked the part. Also, when you work with those experts regarding buying/selling a house, investing, etc, you need to care what they think. You need to use your brain as well so you're giving your input, but you can't totally discount what they say just because it goes against what you think. By and large, those experts will know better than you do. Keep alert for red flags, ask lots of questions, be sure to understand their advice, but you can't just "do your own thing" against all their knowledge and advice simply because "it's who you are."
They prioritize saving and investing over spending. They understand that building wealth is a marathon NOT a sprint. They are disciplined and consistent in investing.

Read, understand, ask lots of questions & apply. Always save a minimum of 10% of your paycheck. U can increase that accordingly based on your debt etc. Stay away from pyramid schemes or get rich quick scams. This is a delayed gratification process

I think many of us don’t want to get rich quick but at least be financially stable quick. Some of us just don’t want to finally reach financial wealth at age 60, but rather be young enough to enjoy that wealth.
Thank you for encouraging on being focused on what God is calling you to, before all else. I came here for financial tips, but this was such a great reminder of how in so many areas of my life, I'm so quick to let people take God's place and become idols in my life.
I agree with most of these comments about building wealth. I completely disagree with the sou sou comment. Sou sous have nothing to do with "getting richer quicker" - they are about contributing to community needs so that the community supports each other and can withdraw if needed. They are more common in collective societies (ex. some immigrant groups and African countries) rather than individualistic societies like the US. We can talk about creating wealth without putting down another culture's ideals.
AO, EDM here. Maybe I missed it, but one other thing millionaires do: they train themselves to be patient. Not months, or even years patient, but decades patient. Getting rich slow takes A LONG TIME for compound interest to really do its thing (at least in our lives). BUT, ya got a bit personal there with the whole workout comment! :D Have a good one, Mike

Just started reading Total Money Makeover. My friend and I have it on our must read list for this month. We had a great discussion recently about building wealth and how to stop just talking about it and actually take some concrete steps. So we are going to read at least one book a month (we have pretty demanding jobs in Healthcare) and will actively work towards starting something (even if small) by the end of this year. I have a financial adviser so working on getting my current financial situation sorted. I want to start investing now but my adviser is suggesting that I wait. What do you think? I feel like it's never to early to start investing. I might not be able to invest a large sum but I should at least start with something.
