It's funny how we normalise this . As a teacher it is very concerning when they look up to these idols. Age and physical appearance the entire thing is so stressful on teenagers growing up who want to be like them but don't know the half of it. Thank you for putting this out there . We need more of this.

I'm also a teacher and I completely agree. I was a former dancer as a kid and up till like college. I still support the performing arts but I went through eating disorders and so many body issues that girls don't even realize the consequences of sadly. I enjoy kpop but it concerns me with some of their ages as well.

And I known how bad kpop is since I was their age. No one forced them into the industry. Especially since most of the members were already known/famous before debuting because they had child careers like modeling. So they knew and they still continued to achieve their dreams. That’s how bad they wanted it

Kpop is a fad so it will eventually die out like all fads do. K-pop has been around for decades, it's not new at all. People are only interested in it or pretending to be because they want to be a part of what's popular and current. Gangnam Style came out pretty much 10 years ago and everyone didn't obsess over Kpop then, they just liked that one song. Because that one song was popular, and they weren't really interested in that kind of music. Kpop is popular to Americans in the same way that Japan is, just in a trendy way but they don't really care about the culture.

@@amber619pop something tells me you’re definitely an American. You have that bubble mindset where you think that the west = the world. Even if the “fad” dies in the west, the K-pop industry will still be a huge corporation. Before it even became talked about in the west, it was still very popular all throughout Asia and other places. And will remain that way as it’s been for decades. So basically if and when it dies out in “the west” aka America nothing would change except your exposure to it. It’s toxicity will still be romanticized by all the other K-pop loving countries. You gotta remember the American audience is a lot smaller than most of the other international audiences. Meaning the K-pop industry will still have a huge market to sell its toxicity to.

BoA debuted at 13 years old, Taemin at 14 years old just like her, Jungkook at 15 so it was always like this and I can say many more who debuted at a young age. It's not okay however the girls have already debuted. The only thing to do is ask the company that they have songs that wouldn't give dirty minded people other ideas. Although it's good to bring awareness about kpop idols debuting young, only taking Newjeans as an example as if it was the newest and most shocking thing is beyond me. And for people who are uncomfortable when looking at them because they're older than them then I must ask how did they feel when Taemin, Jungkook, Krystal debuted and how they looked at them. The other excuse they bring up is "at least there were older members in the group". That doesn't change the fact that the member in question is still young. Where was this enthusiasm for these other idols ? But I guess better late than never smh.
So yeah if people wanna talk about an issue do it fairly and say and recognize the fact that it has been happening for years...
And I must ask how is sexualizing idols the way people do okay just because the member is 18-20 or smthg ? Like some creeps waiting for an idol to hit 18 to start talking about nasty things over them. They would just be sitting and a lot of you guys would be "omg the way they're breathing is" or comments like "my ovaries. I want x to have my babies" etc like they're some sex objects to fantasize on assuming they wouldn't be uncomfortable while looking at those comments because "they're of age. I wish I could like this video 100 times. Really happy to see this being addressed.
Here are some lyrics from their song cookie:
"If you want it, you can get it, if you want it",
    "(Keep) looking at my cookie"
    "taste it"
"Take it, don't break it, I wanna see you taste it",
    "Sugar, I got sugar"
Their management addressed it and said its an innocent song about "baking cookies with fans". Lets play the devils advocate here, if its about baking cookies, why is it always referring to one singular "cookie" and not "cookies"? Why do they refer to "boy" multiple times in the song? And another thing, they said their debut songs follow a storyline.
So okay, attention is about having a crush on someone and looking for their attention. Then hype boy, which is about the beginning puppy love in a relationship. And then cookie is about "baking cookies for fans". And then Hurt is about the break up.
yeah, that totally makes sense. Their management is not only filled with pedophiles, they also think we're stupid enough to fall for any of this. Poor girls.

They treat 30+ people as if they were so old they can't do anything and they asumme people wouldn't pay attention to them because they would be boring. I think what brings me attention to a kpop group is their music and concepts not their age 😐
When I discovered how old NewJeans members were I got very uncomfortable, specially after listening to cookie because I'm the same age as youngest member, so yeah...I can't imagine how they study and work at the same time because I already struggle A LOT with school.

I will say that I liked NewJeans debut up until they released "Cookie." The lyrics and imagery of "Attention" and "Hype Boy" are more age appropriate and fun, and I found them refreshing and interesting. "Cookie" creeped me out, and I really wondered what the company was thinking for that one.

thanks for talking about this. i remember when newjeans debuted everyone was like "omg they're so young! this is wrong!" but then quickly got over it and starting stanning them. like bruh, its still wrong, why r u supporting them now. like, i get the kids probably had little to no choice in the matter, and yes their music is good, but promoting and following the band just shows their management that its acceptable for them to subject these children to this bc kpop stans enjoy it. and ik this has been a problem in the industry for a long time but when does it end? they keep getting away with it bc we keep fueling their careers. kids deserve to just be kids and experience normal childhoods, not be scrutinized or sexualized over every move they make. this kind of stuff is already really damaging to older kpop artists' mental and physical health. just think about how it must affect these kids whose brains and bodies are still developing. there's a reason why child labor laws exist
agh. okay, rant over. sorry, this kind of thing just really pisses me off, and i needed to get that off my chest.

    • @auricia201
      @auricia201 Год назад +1

      Totally agree, it's revolting
I've seen many stans complain how "their poor idols are so mistreated by the company, so they have to support them"... Like, what? Don't they see they are supporting the company as well?
I think the industry promotes that image of the idols, like, showing how much they exhaust themselves practicing, starve themselves...and let the people put the blame on the company because it will move fans to pity and support the group 🤦🏻‍♀️ it's really messed up
Oh, and don't forget, this kind of comments we are doing is "hating behavior", we're just " jealous of their success" 💀

it’s sad because nwjns isn’t even the first instance of this happening in the kpop industry. idols have debuted at 14-15 for many years now and they’ll probably continue to do so. when nwjns debuted, i like everyone else liked their music because it’s really catchy and nice to listen to, but i certainly felt uncomfortable listening to cookie. i’m only 20 years old myself but because i know how these girls will be viewed from their "older fans" inevitably it makes me want to vomit. i’m simply worried for them. there was an instance short after their debut when during their fan sign event, there was an old man who was a "fan" of them...

The problem is that no matter how many ppl voice their opinion nowdays, it isint enough to change ppl from stanning grps like new jeans… it’s the same grp of ppl who says “we need to protect them” who end up supporting them and buying their albums and streaming their songs. If u rly want to help the girls, stop stanning the grp, stop listening to their songs and don’t support them - make it clear that we don’t encourage minors debuting so if the public opinion is so strong and sales fall then the agency will themselves understand that it is not doing them any good to debut minors and this will only help the girls as they won’t have to go through the harshness of the industry at a young age.
I’d rather have the group disband if necessary instead of having creepy old guys fantasize about these girls… and the girls are talented so it’s not like the company will just throw such talent away, so if netizens rly show the power of their opinion, we could get groups like new jeans to debut late.
Honestly I wonder what Danielle’s parents (since she has a western background) must be thinking after hearing their daughter sing cookie 👀

The bit with the pregnancy made me laugh. On that note, it reminded me a bit of MAMADOL, the members were "moms who were stars but had to leave the entertainment industry". It's just a shame they disbanded after the final episode of the reality TV show they were in instead of actually pursuing it (the contract probably forced their hand, though I'm curious if any of them wanted to actually stay). It would be nice if motherhood/fatherhood (and maybe even relationships and marriage, but that seems to be too much for the rampant parasocial relationships in KPOP) was what was normalized in the industry and not... idols debuting before they even turn 16

The fact that even back in 2013 when BTS were debuting Jin was already basically done with university... and now in 2022 we have 13 year olds debuting and dancing AT universities? Honestly a uni-age idol debuting is almost unheard of nowadays. And the fact that trainees are basically 10 or so now is extremely worrying. As if a 10 year old understands the stress their chosen career might put on them. Or that they're likely gonna be used by these companies and sexualised for profit as minors.
I mean not to call out specifically but Wonyoung was 13 when she was dancing Side to Side (a song about being f***ed so hard that you end up "walking side to side") on Produce 48, eventually winning and debuting at 14. That performance went viral iirc.
P Nation just tried to debut a 12 year old CHILD after their survival show Loud, and stopped because of backlash. Like am I insane or is no one else talking/caring about this lol

Being a kpop idol is a entry level gateway into the entertainment industry kind of like disney channel stars. Their target demographic are teens so the idols are meant to be younger while having their company guide them on what to do. There are older musicians and soloists in the industry who operate according to their own artistic vision and would be offended by the title "idol" cause they are referred to as "artists" instead.

Ageism is so bad there honestly, even if you're past 25, you're apparently old.
